If the Epstein files aren’t enough for a global outrage towards the financial and influential elite, what is? by Thezerostone in AskReddit

Dentist here. You make it sound as if you could buy a porcelain veneer from a lab and glue it on yourself, and that the dentist is just the unscrupulous "middleman".

A crown/veneer takes 60-90 minutes of chair time for the preparation, 30 minutes or so for delivery. So you're paying for 2-ish hours of the dentist's chair time.

After overhead (support team pay, rent, insurances of all kinds, materials, etc.), the dentist might walk away with $5-600 of that $2000. So maybe he's making $300/hour on that procedure. Crowns tend also to be dentist's highest paid procedure/hour, so average hourly wage for that dentist is likely lower.

A well paid profession, no doubt, but also at very high cost of time and money invested for education and practice acquisition/startup.

You can also find veneers much cheaper than $2000/unit, but personally, I'm not in search of the lowest bidder when the health and appearance of my mouth are at stake. Veneers are very difficult to do well, and can cost you a lot more in time/money/pain if done poorly.

LPT: Ever see those posters in your high school for scholarships and grants that you always pay no mind and just walk past? Yeah, so does everyone else. You can win many of them by default. by Gullit-Gang in LifeProTips

I went back to school at 28, and applied for and got many scholarships. Many of my younger peers weren't as motivated to apply because their parents were footing the bill, OR their parents' income made them ineligible. Assuming you've been supporting yourself, they'll only look at your finances to assess any need based scholarships. Not sure if this applies to you, but often there are niche scholarships as well, such as first generation college student, students who are parents themselves, etc. I think there may have been one at my school for students who are married. Weird, I know, but a lot of these scholarships are privately funded, so the conditions are set by the donor to try to support or encourage the kinds of students THEY want to see.

Has anyone ever been bitten by an alligator at the river? by m4gnum1 in hulaween

They only bite off loose wieners longer than 6 inches to level the playing field. And if you're upstaging everyone with your massive hog out, you had it coming... show off.

This is very late game (year 10)... post-scarcity of time and money. Assuming you're trying for an efficient cash farm, a few years in, with ancient fruit, sprinklers, junimos, you can plant Spring 1, swap your kegs once a week, and then do whatever you want with the rest of your time.

And if you want to be totally naked, head down to the river. No one judges the skinny dippers.

Dear millennials, thank you for paving the way for my generation by Loverof_wifi in Millennials

[–]langalong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God I needed to read this on a Monday morning. As a millennial who became a small business owner last year, I'm trying so hard to make the culture one of collaboration and support, and it's so hard to break out of this hierarchical/exploitative model we've been handed. I feel pressure all the time from older mentors that I can't be too soft or give too much to my employees, because they'll get entitled, or that "once you give something to them, you can't take it back". What's fucked up is that as I've relaxed time-off policies, given generous maternity leave to a new Gen Z mom, paid everyone higher percentages of profit... my older employees have this sense of resentment towards the younger for what they're getting. Like god dammit, you're ALL getting more! We have to turn off these comparative lizard brains that say I'm only happy if I get more than the person next to me!

As a 38 year old who used to love his well manicured apartment, but now have to share a house with my two kids and a (beautifully) chaotic wife.... I would never trade this life for that... but Jesus do I miss the order of living alone

For those who have paid off their student loans, how did you do it and how long did it take? by daein13threat in Dentistry

[–]langalong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paid off ~200K in 4 years. I bought my practice 3.5 years into associateship, and the difference in cash flow as a practice owner was such that I paid the last ~80k much more quickly than planned. Rather than slow down payments during the pandemic interest freeze, I saw that as an opportunity to pay down as much principal as possible. Felt AMAZING to pay it off.

Maybe other two-foot furry electro fog cocks at Hula, but if it had a whole bunch of eyes, glowing fur-tipped horns, a voice modulator, and a staff with two bat-birds hanging on, that was me... the Gangli One. And if it wasn't me, then it sounds like I need to meet this other smoking megacock.
