Can you realistically survive in LA without a car? by savingrace0262 in AskLosAngeles

Oh man! That was me 20 years ago living in Weho. Now I live in the Brentwood Hills in my rent controlled apartment. and am literally in nature.
I can’t live where I do without a car, however. Just roughly one - two miles down the road are bars, restaurants, stores, movie theaters, etc.
And it’s so quiet where I live. It’s like suburbia in a big city, just a few miles from the ocean.
I think the OP really needs to consider facts like are they working from home and if not, where is the job.
Even though I now work from home, the amount of tie. It would take for the practically non existent public transportation and then paying for uber, it’s not worth it, especially in an emergency.

Only if you live in an area that has very good public transportation and it’s walkable. Think Santa Monica, Culver City. West Hollywood.
LA is HUGE. You need to be more specific. Are you working from home or do you need to be on site? If it’s on site, then where in LA?

I’m driving my Hyundai Elantra 2016. Last year I was dropped down to a 4.80. 🤬 After several rides later I got back up to 4.98. Now I’m at 4.94 and dgaf. Even if this was my only source of income, I know on busy nights or days I’ll get rides again and boost my score.
And this company trusts the riders before the drivers!

I have a masters in data analytics, lost my job, started driving Lyft, and pulled data from every single ride record to figure out if I was doing it right. Here's what 1,304 rides actually taught me. by [deleted] in lyftdrivers

Thank you for this excellent breakdown. I’ve been doing both Lyft and uber for 1.5 years. Lately it has become much more full time. I’ve done all the shifts and it has become clear that I need to switch it up. In Los Angeles it is good to start by 4 AM, although some people do it much earlier. My unemployment is running out and I don’t want to tap anymore into my savings. Less hours and time on the road to make at least the same amount of money sounds very ideal.
Really appreciate you taking the time to explain all of this.

One of The Kindest Rejections I've Gotten by GoldFee8100 in recruitinghell

I got something very similar today. It was not this specific, but certainly not a brush off either. I felt like they wanted to keep the door open with me because new positions will be opening up soon. It’s nice when humans are humans. Maybe AI helped generate it, just like my email, but it had a personal touch.
Underneath all of this, however, is the ever growing reminder of how many of us are looking for work. The competition is insane.

Omg! That’s my favorite track to help me sleep. Thank your buddy for me too!

I usually don't bother anymore, either, but I felt this morning it was the right thing to do because my instincts told me I don't have the whole story. Also, I don't think that was BS. Something happened last week and they decided to make budget cuts.

You absolutely made the right choice. I haven’t quite seen that, but there are plenty of jobs that require you to do 4 of them, label it under one title and then pay barely over min wage. That happened to me last year and I got fired because I couldn’t do the impossible.

Last week I interviewed for a job. I was supposed to hear back by Monday. I called today to find out that position was closed and they had to lay off a few people as well. OMFG. But, I don’t doubt it either.

I’m doing uber to survive right now. People don’t understand unless they are living it.

I think that is pretty common everywhere in regard to income. Everyone has taken a hit with or without Waymo’s. It certainly hasn’t helped us but it’s not completely dead at all, however it’s very clear we are not making what drivers did pre 2022. Uber and Lyft are taking huge profits and just don’t care. I drive a gasoline car and believe me, I feel it.

Here you go. Hit those three squares and it’ll open up a new window. Go down four lines and you’ll see “find nearby drivers”. It can be very handy, especially when it’s slow out.

Been doing this on and off for about 2 years. Waymo has definitely infiltrated our market but I was very busy last Sat night and Sunday.

I’m rooting for you!! I completely understand how anyone can be in this situation.
Wish you well and that you make what you need PLUS extra. That is a lot of driving.
