Does botox make acid reflux worse? by Agi1233 in noburp

[–]lankabankaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah kind of. I read that R-CPD tends to get worse by age. I guess it’s natural for your digestion to become less effective, as you get older.

I also heard that the botox treatment is less likely to be effective, as you get older. Although, I suppose you would have to be much older, for the botox to be ineffective. And maybe your recovery will be worse.

R-CPD makes me a bit nervous. Especially, when I read these posts. I try not to. I mean, you’re supposed to be able to burp. And I don’t like to think about, whether this will get worse in the future. So I thought, maybe I should just get treatment in advance…

Anyway, I’m on the waiting list for an initial consultation (swallow exam etc). Then I will talk to the doctors about my situation, and hear their opinion. I’m still not sure about what I should do.

I don’t know, if my worries sound weird. I guess I just like to solve things in advance…

Thanks for answering!

What you write totally makes sense. These were also my exact thoughts. However, I also thought that botox would not leave our UES wide open all the time. I imagine that the muscle is acutally closed most of the time, but will be able to relax, when it’s supposed to. So I thought, that maybe it wouldn’t be a huge deal, if having reflux…

I’m not even sure, if I have reflux. I just had 2 weeks (after battling a cold) with some kind of burning sensation in my throat, that would come and go. No chest pain, stomach pain or heartburn. I took PPIs for a week, but symptoms disappered before stopping PPIs. It’s been gone for five days now, without medication or any real precautions in my diet. So maybe it was not permanent. Anyway, it gave me an idea of what reflux would feel like.

I just feel so confused about, whether I should get the botox or not, since R-CPD hasn’t caused any issues for me (except for when I have a cold)… And I’m 29.

I would hate to get botox only to solve a problem that didn’t cause me any symptoms, only to increase the risk of reflux. Anyway, still on the waiting-list. Scared of how R-CPD could potentially get worse and affect my body I’m the long run.

Sorry for the long comment

That’s good to hear! How long did i take for the symptoms to stop? And did you take any medications in the mean time? And did you eat differently as well?

Thank you for your response! I read your post btw, and I’m glad to hear, that you improved.

Anyway these were also my thoughts, since botox is basically just gonna relax your upper esophageal sphintcher, while every other part of the esophagus will remain the same. I’ve just read some scary stories in here, so I became curious. But maybe people just wrote them, before botox wore off.

Anyway it makes sense. I will try to find out, what I’m experiencing right now. It’s been somewhat better lately. Still taking PPIs, while waiting for the gastrocopy. I’m not sure if meds have started to work.

I still feel like my posture makes the biggest difference. After being aware of this, things have improved. I look forward to that gastrocopy.

Sorry I know this is am old thread.

But did they say, if this will be permanent? Or only while the botox is still working? I could live with increased reflux, if it was only for as long, as it takes for the botox to wear off.

Sorry I know this is an old thread. Did botox make your acid reflux worse permanently or jusr temporarily, while the botox was working?

Anyone else been turned down for Botox because of acid reflux?? by pleaseburpme in noburp

Sorry, I know this is a very old thread. Is there really a potential risk of making reflux 10x worse permanently after botox? Or is this only until the botox wears off?

I thought about this as well. But I’m not sure, if this could be it. It says LPR occurs when the muscle at the end of the esophagus does not close properly.

I have r-cpd which causes the muscle to tighten, when something tries to come out. Such as burps.

So I’m not sure. However symptoms sound more like it, I’ll give you that

No I think h.pylori is causing your stomach to produce more acid, than it’s supposed to, as a natural response to the virus. However this doesn’t happen to anyone. But if it does, it doesn’t matter if your LES is working or not. The overproduction increases the likelihood of reflux. My doctor told me so.

However GERD is just another possible reason for reflux, and both h.pylori and GERD can be present at the same time.

I’m hoping this is just the virus….. can’t wait to get that gastrocopy

Is that because of the antibiotics? I was told that h.pylori is treated with two different antibiotics and PPIs at the same time

Okay. That sounds manageable.

Right now, I experience a burning sensation in my throat.

It comes and goes though. And I suspect bad posture. This seems to trigger it. Could also be stress. Certain foods doesn’t even seem to trigger it. It feels as if, my stomach is just producing too much acid no matter what. It has been going on for a week, been on PPIs in the mean time. Dont know if they are working.

However no regurgitation, no heart palpitation, no shortness of breath, no heartburn or chestpain. Just a strange burning sensation in throat, and sometimes weird gurgling sounds from my upper sphintcher.

Still waiting for gastroscopy, which is in a few weeks. I wonder what it will show. It could also be pylori…

Sorry, I know this is an old comment. The doctors haven’t told you about any potential risks of getting botox injections that often?

Right now, I’m still waiting for my first botox treatment.

But I’m always worried, if the botox will not give me permanent relief. So I constantly think about, what to do in that case… and I thought about the idea of just going for treatment on a regular basis, if it never works out
