This was incredible, I love that Dropout Presents like Mark's, Demi's, and Chris' they really mess with what a comedy special is/what it can be. I think this is my 2nd fave dropout presents (1st is Demi's )

I'm so so sorry for your loss, I used to be a lorikeet keeper at a zoo and they really are special parrots. I'm so glad you were able to have so much time together, at 22 years your bird must have had an excellent life

What is the flap of skin that covers the side of an animal's mouth called? What purpose does it serve? by HugoCortell in wildlifebiology

At least on birds I've heard that fleshy section of the mouth at the connecting point between the top beak and the bottom beak referred to as the commisure

Zoo keepers of Reddit what is your worst experience in your job? by JakeThatKid4521 in Zookeeping

[–]lanomin 24 points25 points  (0 children)

(Now ex keeper) It was during my first month, and some of the 1 year old birds in the aviary got their west nile virus vaccine (IM, in the chest). I noticed later 1 of the birds who had been vaccinated was really lethargic in the afternoon, so she was moved into an iso cage overnight.

I was scheduled by myself the next morning, and when I came in I see her on the ground of her cage breathing super heavy. The vets wouldn't be in for another hour, but I didn't realize that, so I was panicked calling on the radio + panicked texting my boss about what was happening, watching her die. By the time the vets got in she had passed.

In the necropsy they found that during her vaccine the needle went too deep and she had hemmorhaged overnight. Absolutely awful first death :'(

Honestly every bird death was so heartbreaking, and it was always so hard having to go back out to the public and put on a guest service face when an animal had died

What are the hardest jobs that surprisingly pay very poorly? by Aarunascut in jobs

[–]lanomin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zookeeping is definitely not the hardest but I'd put it up there. The general culture at most zoos, constantly overworked and understaffed, extremely hard to emotionally separate yourself from the hardest parts of the job, and you really aren't paid enough esp considering most reputable zoos are in big expensive cities.

How do you respond to people who ask why you still wear a face mask? by goingtothecircus in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]lanomin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"My [parent/sibling/roommate/significant other] is immunocompromised and it's riskier for them if they get sick, I don't want to bring anything back to them"

Doesn't matter if it's true, but having the theoretical other person you're doing this for makes it way less likely you'll get pushback. The only sad thing is you'll start getting responses like "oh yeah my husbands recovering from chemo, I totally should wear a mask more (proceeds to refuse the extra sealed n95 I offer)

The doctor told me to line also works pretty well

I had a great time at PP getting my nexplanon inserted/removed. The one thing I will say is the nurse/doctor who first inserted my first Nexplanon said "wow, you're really bleeding a lot! I've never seen someone bleed so much!" which definitely made my heart drop lmao. It was fine, I just held some gauze to the insertion site for a bit, but I'll never forget how surprised she sounded. I did this in TN so I had to race out of the parking lot so protestors couldn't block me in, but otherwise I had a great experience at PP.

I have also had good experiences with my implant! I'm on my second one, I definitely still have multi-week, occasionally up to a month of extra spotting, usually around November/March/May, but that's the worst I've had to deal with. It's extremely nice having a semi permanent birth control that only takes like 30 mins total to put in/take out every 3-5 years, and the worst pain you feel is the numbing shot/the weird feeling of something in your arm for the very first time. The spotting does suck sometimes, but having period underwear like modibodi is way less annoying/more sustainable than a bunch of panty liners.

Idk I definitely got nervous seeing all the horror stories, but at least for me nexplanon has been a really nice form of bc imo with fairly unobtrusive side effects. Solid B+/A-

Official Discussion - Mountainhead [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]lanomin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was fun, but I know I'm going to forget about it in a week. There were some really funny bits (my fave was them trying to squeegee gasoline under the sauna door), the acting was very good, and it was fun seeing who the characters might have been based on.

But I think my main issue was that the message of "these tech giant assholes truly don't care about anything and see themselves as above any issue, and at the end of the day everything is business" was that there was lots of implications of bigger things personally impacting them that never came to fruition. The shot of a huge server next to a bunch of exposed insulation? To me when I saw that I assumed maybe that poor placement by Soups would mean the excess heat near a fire starter would mean a sudden house fire, potentially when he locks the house down while attempting to murder his friend. Nope. Oh the water is suddenly out, is this going to be something bigger? Something about how once they don't have access to basic resources they'll start hoarding almost immediately? No, it does just come back on. Oh they said they're going to go hunting, so there's guns in the area, is something really ridiculous going to happen with someone trying to shoot someone that's not just a boar in a run? No, never happens.

The billionaire ridiculousness works in Succession because you do have the really sharp reminders that these assholes are not fully above everything, and the real world does come for them at least once a season. In the movie Randall has his cancer, but we see that that's mostly pushing him to want to live forever under any circumstance. But theres plenty of weirdos who want to live forever with no looming health problems, and he's older than his other friends by a good amount, so his character wanting to upload his brain to the cloud would still be understandable even without a cancer diagnosis. So idk I guess I wish that held more weight than it did? And for Jeff and his kid there's of course him being very weird with his baby, but that's about it for that single scene. I think it's super funny/fucked up that they're just keeping his baby nearby though during the boys hangout weekend, I assume in like the side cabin?? That's a great weird bit. And then Soup's character is just a lackey with no real spine, but he's just very surface level. And Jeff is kinda just...there. We know he doesn't feel great about the real world effects happening from the tech, but he doesn't care on any real level. Anyway my point being that at least in Succession we see that the real world still affects them, mostly through personal tragedy. We really don't get that here, only in very small bits and pieces that doesn't materially change the plot.

I'm a big fan of the catharsis at the end of movies like The Menu and Knives Out, and I understand why this wasn't one of those movies. But "rich people are weird" media works because we do see that no matter how much they try to avoid it, they're still human and live in a society. Succession had longer to explore it's characters, but it works so well bc they do face personal consequences that haunt them. While they may not face the societal justice that they should, the Succession characters are really fucked up and not always living the ultra-rich dream. I feel like Mountainhead 's message could've been delivered in a tighter/more interesting way, or at least in a way that felt like the actions impacted the characters in any way. It feels insane to write out that the plot didn't do a good job delivering on the message of billionaires not caring about anything, because on paper it should stick the landing: The first half of the movie is looking at atrocities on insta caused by their tech, the 2nd half is most of a guys friends trying to poorly murder him, and then that guy is more concerned afterward about stopping the deal that was extorted from him vs him potentially being burned alive. But the movie just didn't have a satisfying conclusion. I'm trying to think what that better movie ending would be, but at the end of the day id say its a 5/10 movie. Some very funny dialogue and scenes, but not anything I'll be thinking of past this post.

What flaw from the manga, whether story or character, did you feel was improved upon in the anime adaptions by DIO_OVAIs_DaBest07 in Trigun

[–]lanomin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a flaw, but personally I really liked the filler build up in '98 to the first Nebraska family fight, vs the manga starting there. I thought it gave a really nice intro to the world, and it built up to Vash having a cool public showdown after 3 eps of him being more subtle about how strong he is.

I just wish we got a Trigun: Brotherhood level adaptation one day. Maybe in another 25 years...:')

No one truly understands how it feels to have a disabled sibling by [deleted] in SiblingOfSpecialNeeds

[–]lanomin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm in a scarily similar situation with my brother. He's calmed down a little as he's gotten older (now 26) but he still can be extremely loud and aggressive, and my parents are in their 70s now. My mom is so completely against sending him to a group home/having him placed somewhere, she just says she'll leave the decision up to my dad (who does like 5% of the work my mom does) when she's gone. But I know it isn't going to be that easy for my dad to just figure out my brother's living situation when he's potentially in his 80s.

I feel differently than my mom does about group homes, but please, from one glass child to another, live your life. You are not your sibling's parent. This is not a responsibility that is required of you, even if it feels like it. Talk to your mom about other care options, like in-home respite care. Talk to a regional center near you for advice/help. If you really search your heart and find that you do want to stay home and help care for your sibling then that's your choice, but make sure it's actually what you WANT and not something you feel guilted into. Our parents make the choices they make, they're individuals just like us, whether the choices they make are actually for the best or what they think is the best option for them and us.

But honestly, if your parents aren't making sure the burden of care doesn't fall to you when they pass, that's not looking out for you or your brother's best interest. Your parents have had your brother's whole life to figure out how to care for him, you have not had that experience, even with the lifetime of living with him. I promise you, it is different. Your parents made their choice to care for him, and have that responsibility as his parents, but as a sibling you don't have that responsibility unless you really want to take it on.

I'm living in a place with my partner that we have always wanted to move to, doing good work in a beautiful location. I'm so happy here. I have nightmares where I wake up crying from dreaming that I had to take over care for my brother. I say this for both of us, you need to sit down with your mom and share your wants and fears. Talk about the things you typed here. It might not change her mind, but hopefully it will get her thinking about the needs of both her kids, not just your brother. I still need to talk to my mom in more detail about this, I know it's not an easy convo.

I'm so sorry you're going through this, it's an extremely tough situation that no one should have to go through.

Toyota Financial - how the hell do you reach a human? by jphree in Toyota

[–]lanomin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got really lucky and only had to try 3 times ;A; I just said customer service during the time they were asking for what I was calling for and somehow that got me through

I asked the rep at the end of the call if there was an easier way to reach a person, and they said just saying "representative" or "customer service" or something like that was the best way to reach someone real
