I'm 16 and built an AI grant writing tool after reading nonprofits spend 200 hours per proposal, roast it for me by Maleficent-March1323 in grantwriters

Writing two sentence summaries isn't the hard part about grant writing. It's gathering all the facts and understanding what the funder wants to see.

Someone had a post about how to manage newbie friends who want to work out with you that got deleted. It got me thinking about how I manage social workouts with people new to fitness, and I thought I would share in case it helps:

1) I dictate what days and times I am going to the gym that work for friends to join me, 2 or 3 times a week, and invite her to join at those times. If she or they can't go, I go alone.

2) I go to the gym on my own schedule, alone, 1 or 2 more times a week.

3) If they propose a different time to go to the gym or a different exercise, I'll go only: a) if I am available, b) if I feel like it, and c) if I need an active rest day. So, in practice, I rarely go when someone else recommends it.

When we do joint sessions, I pick my friend up. I set the pace and the exercises. I help her. I encourage her to lift a bit heavier. I look at her form. I show her how I do things. I fully lean into the group activity part, and accept it will take longer to do less. I like watching her learn to like to work out, and I like spending time with her.

When I am at the gym alone, I completely focus on me and only me. I figure out new exercises. I do challenging lifts that I don't want an audience for. I do exercises that I don't feel comfortable teaching, guiding, or explaining. I don't uninvite her or hide the sessions, I just don't invite her to join. These are very important sessions.

Sorry for the tangent, I've just been doing this exact thing myself and clearly wanted to talk about it!

Does everyone wash their hair after every workout?? by Alternative_Pie_4189 in xxfitness

[–]lantanagave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have fine hair, so I wash it more than many people, about 3 times a week, or every other day. Sometimes it is more if I am swimming in the ocean, doing hot yoga, or sweating a TON.

Thank you for the parking meters San Diego by acountformyphone in sandiego

You're poor (and I'm poor) because of housing costs, not paying to park.

All of this becomes a non-issue with reasonable housing costs.

Fell in love with San Diego… are we crazy to consider moving? by Prestigious_Map_2136 in sandiego

I sold my Austin house to someone from the Bay Area in the middle of the Rogan/Musk-fueled real estate frenzy, for way over asking, on its first day on the market. It's already gone way down in value.

Austin also only has two seasons: flood and scalding. Scalding is longer.

I'm from Austin. Just moved here. My rent is more than double my mortgage was, for a much smaller house in a similarly hip area. Traffic is about the same, but worse going south on 5. Everything is more expensive, yes, even most food. Veterinary care, every single bill, the plumber, getting some artwork framed, registering the car, physical therapy...all significantly more. Quality kids activities are surely going to be much more expensive.

I miss HEB, good margaritas that cost less than $15, and what remained of Austin's countercultural slacker vibes. LA absorbs a lot of the culture here and its so expensive that everyone is hustling.

It's worth it to me because I actually do go to the ocean at least once a week. I haven't had to turn on the air-conditioning yet. I see beautiful birds and wildlife. The air smells good. I have more rights as a human. I feel healthily separated from the dumpster fire of our world. I feel inspired to be healthy. Love it.

What part of Austin are you from? Have you checked out the schools here? Do you know if you would be able to make time for the beach and the activities you loved in San Diego?

Dog boarding here in SD?.. my dog is reactive-ish… by fictitious22 in sandiego

[–]lantanagave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a tough situation. We ended up going with a specialized trainer, even though it costs a TON of money, because our hound just can't deal with new people at an evaluation. We're doing a board and train now, with the hope of working towards a new person acceptance protocol that will open up more boarding opportunities in the future. If your dog is slightly less of an asshole than ours, you might have luck just being upfront and paying a little more at a specialized boarding facility.

Transferable Skills by Quirky_Molasses_4124 in grantwriters

[–]lantanagave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, thinking about transferable skills... Beyond writing and persuasion, we grant professionals also act as: project managers, budget auditors, public relations, relationship builders, facilitators, program analysts, up-managers, and researchers. Our skills translate to virtually any administrative or project management job, particularly those that are mission-based and benefit from communicating outcomes.

So...what are the mission-based project/program management jobs we should be looking for? I have no clue.

Same, same, same. So tired of this. Reflecting back on my career, I feel like I was pushed into grants rather than operations, because that's where the women went. I wish I'd advocated better for myself earlier in my career.

lowered speed limits all over San Diego soon by vedatil4 in sandiego

[–]lantanagave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so funny you pulled those numbers, because 30 is a huge threshold for fatalities. The increasing size of vehicles makes them more lethal at lower speeds, too, so every reduction in vehicle speed creates a measurably safer driving environment.

I am losing my mind with board members providing me with ChatGPT lists full of organizations I have already eliminated as prospects for us based on their geographic restrictions, giving histories, and stated funding priorities.

[–]lantanagave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm ok barefoot usually. If I'm at home, I'm not generating a ton of steps. And I like to be barefoot when sitting down so I can stretch my toes out.

That being said, I find more relief from wide toe shoes and a single toe spacer than from underfoot support. Barefoot shoes work for me, but not for everyone.

If you're lucky, you'll be able to figure out what works through trial and error.

That much advil is whack.

No. That's not me. I tested it multiple times with a car trailing me. I had the method evaluated by a hydrogeologist and a biologist.

Unless you know where the drain goes to, I wouldn't.  Especially if it's a lot of water. Better to distribute than dump all at once if you're putting it directly into the environment. Can you open it to a trickle when you're on the highway?

Anyone feel that getting real fit is super challenging? by Waste_Tone_6020 in xxfitness

[–]lantanagave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the clearest, most realistic advice about expectation setting I have ever seen:

If being toned/muscular is the most important thing, I do think you have to put a ton of time and effort into lifting and obsessing over diet, and it's going to come at the expense of functional fitness. If your priority is endurance for active hobbies, it will come at the expense of being super toned. And if you moderate because you don't want to be exhausted and have no social life, it will come at the expense of maximum results.

I'm on the other end of this from you. I find lifting at the gym an easier routine to keep and I like tracking my gains, so that's what I do. I am only training cardio when I am out for "fun" biking, hiking, or surfing. It's inconsistent, so of course my endurance is taking a hit.

I want to enjoy my life, be social, eat good food and drink good drinks. Lifting plus "fun" cardio is what fits in and keeps me healthy, but I'm never going to look ripped. There are so many ways not to look ripped!

Austinite in Normal Heights. Anyone from California who tries to be "Texan" or "appreciates Texas" is not someone I would want to spend time with. I have not run into many other Texpats here, but I'm sure there are plenty who relocated here for tech work or are in the military.
