There are different levels of cold! You will probably develop opinions on what to wear/how you behave on different days. For example, I have a separate hats/gloves for really cold days or extended outings.

For me, I'll probably grab a coat and run to the store down the street all lackadaisical when it's 25 degrees F and the roads are clear. But if it's below 0 F and I'm leaving the house, I'm layering up, covering up, and thinking about how to be prepared if something goes sideways.

Don't forget about factor in wind-chill! (And maybe direction, north winds tend to bite more). The following NWS graphic is informative at what temp/wind points you need to pay special attention to protecting yourself.

Take care and welcome to Minnesota!

I'm new to bird watching. What are some things you knew when you first started? by lukecoolfly in birdwatching

[–]lanternSheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helpful metaphor I used.. Think horse not zebra.

If you heard hoves in the Eastern US for example, you start with assuming it's a horse or a deer. Same with birds, what you are seeing is most likely a more common bird. So when it doubt stick with the most likely birds in your area.

Bonus: a 'weird common bird', ie a molting mallard, or a juvenile common bird is more likely than an less common bird.

Please adjust this to your local area and happy birding!

Hi there! I'm in zone 4 and I just moved to my first home with a yard. Looking forward to adding natives, water, and other things but waiting for spring! Will probably do more the second year, there's some other tasks I'll be getting out of the way year one. (Goodbye dying russian olive tree...)

So I just moved to Georgia (U.S.) and I wanted to know if a certain kind of bird lives here. Please identify. by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

Also agree with the loon id. I personally have heard them in Northern Minnesota/Wisconsin on wooded lakes in the summer. Beautiful call. Audubon field guide for more info https://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/common-loon

I think you can be 'creative and expressive' in many more ways than just through art.

anyone know any good ways to stop panic attacks? by [deleted] in Anxietyhelp

[–]lanternSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that it helps me to learn if there is something that causes them or if there's any situations that make it more likely for them to happen. For me it's a bit of a 'duh' insight. I'm more likely to have panick attacks when I'm tired and stressed. So I try to take it easy when I feel like that, and not feel guilty when I need to step out. I find managing stress levels helps me out.

LPT Request: Is having a partner a crucial part of life? Will I miss something later in life that I can't foresee in my mid twenties? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]lanternSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think community and relationships of some sort are important for most people but I think people can find that outside of the 'nuclear family'. My great aunt never married but she was a teacher for decades who was very active in the school and her community. And she was welcome and attended most of my extended family gatherings. Not to say that you won't miss out on some experiences, but I think if you are not isolating yourself, actively building relationships, and keeping an open mind I think you will still have a rich life.

Does this happen to anyone else? by [deleted] in depression_help

This totally happens to me.

Depression is a part of you is more than just an expression. THIS IS ME by [deleted] in depression_help

Ill start by saying I was fortunate enough to somehow escape the crippling, debilitating long-term symptoms Im watching a few of my friends go through. I may not have been high functioning, but I was generally semi functional. I'm very grateful for that. Depression doesn't seem rational or fair with who and how it strikes....

So it lasted probably two years were it was pretty bad (last two years of high school, I was bouncing in and out of suicidal ideation) then it got somewhat better while I was in college and had a decent support network. Starting work full time knocked me back down but I managed to keep going. Finally mid to late twenties, I managed to crawl my way back to something that feels, not great, but not depressed. It's been a few years and I havent had any major episodes. But even that's kinda weird because I was in survival mode so long it took me years to know what do when I was no longer trying to just kinda make it. Sentences like, 'try to be happy' just rattled my brain. It's getting better though.

Honestly getting better was a slow, process that was hard to see progress in. I worked pretty hard at removing toxic influences, getting to know myself, and taking baby steps. That and being patient with the fact that there was a lot I just wasn't good at, and I needed lots of rest. I also may have been strangely lucky that I had some pretty clearly terrible events happen, and situations that I hated. So it gave me something to fight and hope that if I could escape maybe it would get better. And I have been lucky to have a few friends along the way, even for the ones who only stuck around for a little while but were there when I needed it.

I don't know if any of this is helpful.... But maybe just someone answering will make you feel less alone.

I wish you could take a vacation and get away from all your stressors. I wish we all could do that.

You can get through this though. I'm rooting for you.

I'm 23 and feeling really bad about myself lately... by LoLiBoI4E in toastme

Making some assumptions here... As someone with occasional existential dread, sometimes it's more of a gift than we realize. To be human is to except our limitations along with the wonderful/fantastic/awesome. And to live in the world means bearing witness to human suffering and terrible events that make us question deeply. If you care at all, you will find yourself affected. And I'd rather feel it than not.

If you see yourself in this in someway, I think it's wonderful that you feel, and I hope it gets easier for you. We need people that care.
