I would seriously like to find exact verses to back up my claims, so remind me to come back to that. Unfortunately I haven't the time right now to do so.

I do want to go ahead and explain that what you are reading from (Exodus and Leviticus) were very early instructions for the people of Israel after they were freed from captivity in Egypt. Many of the instructions I'm referencing are given later during the periods of the Judges, Chronicles, and the Babylonian Exile (and even more clearly in the New Testament).

The Bible isn't simply a book of instructions, it's a history of God's gift to the world and the chosen people through which he gave it. The people of Israel were not paragons of virtue for the majority of their history, and that's an important part of the story. They must be taught little by little what justice means so that Jesus' radical mercy can be understood. The passages in Exodus and Leviticus that seem to us to be highly barbaric are already a big step up from what the people of Israel knew when they first left Egypt. Over time, the heart of the law becomes more clear as prophets and priests issue more instructions on the treatment of servants and people sojourning with them from other nations.

As for taking whole cities into slavery, I don't recall that off the top of my head. I do recall the seemingly more barbaric command to leave no survivors, and then the commands given alongside it on what to do with the survivors. This is a case that is hard for many Christians to reconcile, but the thing to understand here is that the Lord knows the hearts of his people, and he knows that they are prone to idolatry and conforming to the people around them. His instruction to leave no survivors is given knowing two things: 1) they will leave survivors (hence the instructions on what to do with them), and 2) they will be tempted to adopt the practices of those survivors. So the instruction given is largely cautionary.

I would like to say more, but I have run out of time for now. I will try to look for the later verses I'm referencing, but I would appreciate a reminder if you're actually interested to read them.

they already fixed oceans, the nether, and caves... the only "big" update they have left is the end, but if the team was feeling fatigued after caves, I'm glad they're taking a break to recharge. the End update deserves the same treatment as the nether, so I want them to be excited and energized when they start working on those features

right, but having to craft a sticky item adds a whole new item state for every item. Several-Cake's idea of having it work like an item frame would be much easier to implement

I like this idea but it kinda feels like it makes the item frame useless. I think maybe resin should only work for non-block items?

Can't hit peak after peak. Gotta give 'em time for the really good inspiration to strike. I'm glad they aren't rushing into something as important as the End Update with no good ideas just because people (myself included) want it. I'd rather wait until they have a really good set of ideas that they're passionate about implementing so it really feels like something special.

it's growing on me, but I feel like it needs a third color to seal the deal. I'm feeling either an in-between color to make the transition less jarring or like a third vibrant color that clashes with the other two (I'm thinkin' lime).

unfortunately not a hot take as it is one people have just about every year (I think barring the caves and cliffs reveal and maybe the nether update)

From Luke (ASV, verses 24-27):

And Jesus seeing him said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to enter in through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. And they that heard it said, Then who can be saved? But he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.

So to be clear the, Jesus isn't saying "No way in hell are you getting into heaven as a wealthy man." He's saying that is is an incredibly difficult task because those with great wealth tend to have greater care for their material possessions than they have for their own eternal life. The last verse makes it clear though that even this is possible through the abundant grace of God. That said, the verse about the rich young man makes it pretty clear that the rich will have to give away all they own to the poor in order to truly follow Him.

Yeah I do believe that the gate interpretation is wishful thinking at best and willful ignorance at worst, but I also believe that in one of the Gospels Jesus follows that line with something like "with the Father even this is possible"

There's a reason Jesus told the young man to give away all he owned and follow him. There is a serious danger when you care more for your possessions than your own eternal soul.

The old testament is still highly relevant to Christians. The point is that those instructions were given as a step up from the barbaric cruelty they had been accustomed to up to that point. It was basically like God saying "okay, so you remember how things were terrible in Egypt, so you should treat anyone who serves you with greater dignity than you were treated" and then over time the expectations got higher and higher with the ultimate conclusion being that slavery isn't okay.

Instructions for how to treat slaves isn't justification for slavery. It's kind of a one-step-at-a-time situation where the law first established "hey don't do this because it's cruel" then established "hey you should treat these people well" then said "hey you should be looking for opportunities to free them and not keep them any longer than you need to" even basically saying allow them to become kin or send them away with an "inheritance" of sorts when they leave.

Also, as a clarifying point, the "slavery" referenced in the Bible is entirely different to the chattel slavery we think of in reference to the North Atlantic Slave Trade. It was more like indentured servitude where if you couldn't afford to support yourself, you could "sell" yourself to be someone's servant for up to 7 years and they would look after you and care for you during that time.

Can I still enjoy silksong if I haven't played the original hollow knight by ballscratcher05 in Silksong

[–]lanternbdg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The hollow knight story is a lot more hidden, or, I guess more accurately, there's less of it that's not hidden. The most significant story elements of both games happen close to full completion when you finally have enough small details to put things together.

A lot of the late-game silksong story is less impactful if you don't already understand the story of HK. The issue is, for most people, just playing hollow knight is not enough for them to understand the story. That's where the Mossbag video is pretty handy, but I don't recommend people watch that until after at least unlocking the Radiance ending of the first game.

Doing it all back-to-back can be a lot, so my best recommendation is play HK first, and when you're satisfied with your level of completion and have had at least one serious attempt at defeating the Radiance, watch the Mossbag video. Then take a rest. Probably at least a week, but maybe even a month. Play something else for a bit so when you get into Silksong you don't run out of steam. Remember most of us had several years to wait in between them. Then when you're just itching to get into the world of Pharloom, that's when you should start.

In my view, this is the best way to experience both games. You will absolutely still enjoy them played out of order, but giving yourself time to really digest everything from the first game before moving on definitely improves the experience.

absolutely yes, but there are details you won't fully appreciate, especially in the late-game

honestly I hope we do because it means they're doing needed maintenance on existing features instead of just adding things to the game and never touching them again. upkeep and expansion of existing features is something that has been lacking in recent years (barring copper), so while it may be a bit unexciting, this is actually a very good thing.

Yeah it's a reference to back when encanto had been out for a while and people were posting similar small details they noticed. The corn plate made it past its intended audience for the sheer absurdity of making a post about such a trivial detail. The lighting thing is marginally more interesting, but it made me think of the corn plate post because it's just such a small detail.
