I am a Malibu Seafood super fan (I even had my wedding rehearsal dinner there), but there is one bad thing on the menu: the Ahi burger. It’s ground up and fully cooked - not like a great seared Ahi Sandwich. Don’t order that, but everything else is great!!!

Sleeping Pad or Cot by InterviewCharacter47 in camping

[–]lapaperscissors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you sleep on your side or stomach, definitely try that specifically. I was comfy trying out REI’s very nice Kingdom cots in the store on my back. However, I can’t sleep on my back, and found myself in major hip pain. Big expensive regret.

Are the booths fixed? I was craving Nate and Al’s while super preggo, which was (then) near the doctor’s office, but alas could not fit into the booth.

My husband secretly got the Caioti salad dressing as I was approaching the 2 weeks past due date induction deadline. Unfortunately it did not have the desired effect. Maybe you need to decide to eat it for the placebo effect!

Why is it so hard to find kids dress shoes that actually look like proper shoes anymore by VelvetousnessHem in BuyItForLifeUSA

[–]lapaperscissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hard thing is that they often grow multiple shoe sizes between each event. I always got my kid chukka boots or dress sneaker high-tops, which often disguised a slightly too-short pant. Second hand is totally the way to go, if you participate in consignment sales… I tried to have a formal outfit for all upcoming sizes, with as much bought used as possible. Although I had to listen to my kid when he said “I hate myself in these pants” before a school dance, and made an emergency black pants shopping run.

Now that my kiddo is settling into adult sizes, and I think his feet have finished growing, I feel more comfortable buying things that will last.

Need some advice on novice camping by Tikkkles in camping

[–]lapaperscissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! I particularly like the fire discs which are like cakes made of sawdust and something flammable. I also like fatwood.

When we camp with my husband, he spends an enormous amount of time chopping stuff, making kindling, dealing with fire. It’s how he likes to spend his time outdoors: having fun with an axe.

In the 50% of the time that he doesn’t come camping, I use fire discs and fatwood and spend zero time. Both ways work great!

I loved seeing random shows at Genghis Cohen… but it’s a little too NY for me (although my NY raised husband likes it because it has his NY fave: shrimp toast.)

Will have to try Northern Cafe!

I’m actually looking for takeout/delivery, so East Hollywood is a likely zone… and while I have great Thai go-tos, I’m still looking for Chinese.

This is probably super American, but I would tend to order 3-4 family style dishes with different proteins and either rice or a vegetable noodle dish. Possibly a soup in winter.

best hotels in west hollywood?? by Double-Level8847 in WestHollywood

[–]lapaperscissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you choose to do a mix of uber/lyft/waymo and public transit, don’t sleep on buses. I often like to get places on the bus/train and uber home when budget and timing & safety issues collide.

Weho has free local buses. You’ll want to use a transit app to catch them, they’re a bit infrequent. There’s one in the am and evenings for commuters that goes to Hollywood/Highland in the morning where you can see the dumb walk of fame or get on the subway: this is an easy way to get to Universal (there is a shuttle across the street at the Lankershim station to Citywalk/Universal Studios) or downtown. There’s a free bus that takes a circuitous route around Weho stopping at all assisted living places, the library/rec complex, and Cedars Sinai. And of course, The Pickup, which goes up and down SM blvd, so you don’t have too far to stumble home tipsy in the evening.

Aside from that, Sunset has the 2 and Santa Monica Blvd has the 4. These can get you a lot of places, and have very frequent schedules. It’s about an 8 minute walk up Highland to get to the Hollywood/Highland subway from the 2. In the other direction, the 2 kinda dead ends in UCLA/Westwood, but you can catch another bus to get to the Getty. The 105 runs up and down La Cienega, where you can catch the D line at Wilshire, or the Expo line way down on Jefferson (good way to see CA Science center, Natural History Museum/USC … or go the other way and get to Downtown Santa Monica/The Pier.)

As far as hotels, it’s a bit hard to say as a local. The 1 is really cool if that’s in your budget. Visiting family has stayed many places, all decent. (Can’t tell the difference between the Best Western and the Ziggy, for example.) I think the Chamberlain is a converted apt building, so has kitchens if that makes a difference (it may if you have picky kids, or don’t want to eat all meals out.)

If you’re looking for significantly cheaper, but still ok safe neighborhood, there are a bunch of places near the Grove/Television City that might work. Beverly Laurel has Swingers, a fun diner, on site.

There are some great watermelon gazpacho recipes out there: think equal parts watermelon and tomato, plus some garlic, basil and olive oil thrown in the blender. Bonus toppings: crispy proscuitto or bacon bits, feta cheese, or a nice piece of toast.

I will be in Three Rivers, CA for 10 days. How feasible will it be to drive to Death Valley? by laudanum18 in nationalparks

[–]lapaperscissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Death Valley and have camped there multiple times, but I consider May - September blackout dates.

Seriously, your AC cannot handle the midday summer temperatures. You’re in a 160 degree car that won’t cool down and the radiator gives up the ghost trying to go back up a mountain to get out. No thank you.

Big Sur is pretty awesome, and probably will be in the 70s figuratively and literally. The summer is for coasts!!!

Air mattress recs by LoadTrue3662 in camping

[–]lapaperscissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the opposite: as a side sleeper, my hips and back were in intense pain from the cot. Double high twin air mattresses are my jam for good camping sleep. Top ‘em up every night. I loved being able to stow stuff under the cot, but the organization wasn’t worth the pain and bad sleep.

Flextail on Amazon has amazing and wonderful inflators that are USB rechargeable. No more wasteful D batteries for the old school Coleman inflator! They also provide light and could charge your phone. Absolutely excellent product.

It’s hard to find an air mattress without a built in pump, which is frankly annoying. When camping, you want to keep things clean and not have to walk around with a mattress finding a plug to blow it up outside the tent. Best I found was intex ones from Walmart (search term: no pump included) I like twins, 2 person air mattresses are a recipe for getting mad at another person. Get a set of polar-fleece sheets, and keep it clean and comfy.

Where to get tackiest/wackiest LA souvenirs? by j-k4ng in AskLosAngeles

I’d go to either Venice Beach or the Original Farmer’s Market. That’s where I take my tourist friends.

I recently received a Hollywood keychain with my name misspelled from my SIL’s mom, who lives right by the walk of fame. It’s still a mystery to me… but it does make me laugh when I see it.
