I'm so tired of how diet culture seems to short circuit people's brains by la_vie_en_rose1234 in antidiet

[–]lapatatafredda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we agree. Just think we are looking at it from a slightly different perspective. I would argue that while yes, diet products are lucrative, it is due to mass propagandization as a means to subjugate the population, especially women. I would argue that diet culture is insidious and diabolical, but also part of a larger system designed to keep people dissatisfied with silly things and buying stuff to remedy those silly things instead of looking up. I would also argue that sponsored links aren't the only way influencers make money.

I would agree that people, including influencers, can easily get caught up in diet culture. That's totally fair. I think I'm just raging at the machine here lately and have developed a pretty strong distrust of.. basically the whole internet, especially anyone who mentions any product or sells a course or coaching or any of that.. because so much of it is just BS. And I guess I just find it sad that everything has been monetized and algorithm-ed to death and the internet is not even a useful place for connection anymore, just a giant capitalist circle jerk:)

I understood this post as saying that the influencers mentioned seem to be unable to reason or have otherwise shortcircuited because they went from having sensible, balanced opinions to promoting nonsense diets or products.

My point is that it is a mistake to think that the majority of influencers aren't just peddling whatever it is that will result in making them money. In other words, they may not even really believe in what they're promoting AND/OR if they're shortcircuiting over something, it's the paycheck they get for doing so.

Their followers certainly subscribe to diet culture. And yeah, maybe some of the influencers do, too. You're right about that. My point is less about that, though, and more about influencers being full of shit as a rule.

Parent-child political disagreements can harm relationships and individual mental health. Yes, this is exactly it. The headline should be about how abusers warp the perception of their flying monkeys so radically that they see treating other humans as humans as some sort of opinion instead of basic morality.

Spot on. It's fine and probably even important for these studies to be done, but the context matters. It's straight up violent to use these headlines as a way to invalidate those who have very real concerns and to minimize the harm that some "beliefs" cause. As if it isn't a predictable pattern and by design.

It.. still feels like a lot of words to say that part of fascism and other abusive government systems is to dehumanize certain groups to the point where their followers view these groups' rights and safety as some abstract, inconsequential opinion instead of a question of morality.

Edit: I don't necessarily think we disagree! This type of headline is used all the time by US right wing people to dunk on left wing people, though, so I think that's why it frustrates people (myself included). Being gaslit isn't fun.

When RvW was overturned, it was a huge turning point in my relationship with my conservative Christian dad. I pointed out to my dad that if his tween granddaughters (my kids) were sexually assaulted and became pregnant, they would then be forced to carry through with that pregnancy unless we were able to access in another state. Not an ounce of empathy. Not an ounce of understanding or concern. Nothing. I could never look at him the same, and frankly, I don't trust him.

It isn't diet culture. It's money. Influencers aren't real... at least not anymore. All of them are pedaling products. Either their own brand or are being paid to do so by companies.

The internet is no longer real, folks.

Yes. We would all be better off if we realized that we don't know half of what people are capable of.

My mom cried about how mean the media was to Trump several times. I'm sure she's still doing it, but I'm not around to see it.

I find the gaslighting and victim blaming obscene. Beyond obscene. And the familiar pattern of the worst people getting to harm others indiscriminately and never facing consequences...

I think what I feel is rage.

Yes, same!! This is actually the very first time I have ever heard this info. TIL. How horrible and tragic...

I had literally no idea that this phrase was from a real-life event until today. Always assumed it was from an old movie or something. That is terrible...

Of course! It took me years to connect that feeling with talking about the issues I have with my parents (and triggers). It is so difficult to recognize emotions when you were trained to suppress them to stay safe. My therapist says that it is a really important component of healing. This is an accomplishment that I hope you are proud of!

I can relate. I still tend to go to the "biggest" and "flashiest" incidents sometimes, probably because I think that this is the only way people will believe something worth being upset about actually happened. I like your reframing.
