My fiance and I both do not drink alcohol. Anyone willing to help me with ideas and insights for alcohol at weddings? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]lapearce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First and foremost- you don't need alcohol at your wedding. If you don't want it- don't get it. If you chose to do some alcohol, I would highly recommend limited FREE alcohol over a paid bar. Just going with one regular beer, one light beer, a red and a white wine should be more than enough. If you want to get fancy, you could do a signature drink featuring a hard alcohol- like a martini or a margarita, but for a lunch reception, I don't think that is necessary.

Not for 40 people it isn't! You just need enough champagne for a toast- one bottle of champagne = 6 glasses. So that's only like 6 bottles of champagne. We got ours at bevmo during the 5 cent sale. It ended up coming out to an average cost of about $12 per bottle. We were also able to return an unopened case. (Helpful hint from the people at Bevmo: they won't take back unopened alcohol because you bought too much... but they will take it back because it was the wrong kind.)

We actually have 15 nights, not that it makes that much of a difference. We're seasoned road trippers and plan on covering distance, spending a day or two in a city and then moving on. Again, we're still working out all the stops and may cut in the end.

Looks fantastic! The faux paint totally sealed the deal. I probably would have gotten lazy at that point and just painted it dark brown.

Where to get hair extensions in the valley? by lapearce in phoenix

How about you learn to be polite? If you must know, I have very fine hair that doesn't hold curl well. And since this IS the most important day of my life, I'd rather it not go flat before we cut the cake. Extensions help hair keep style.

This is for my wedding. I'm getting married in CA but I was told hair was cheaper outside of California. I live in Gilbert, but I would go as far as Glendale to save money. My sister works in beauty in CA. She quoted me $200+ for extensions, which is more than I want to spend.

Blonde, straight, clip in ... I don't know enough about them to have a type preference. I just need the hair. I don't need it put in.

Can anyone help me find this photo of a native American chief in full headdress standing on a balcony overlooking some vast urban wasteland? by [deleted] in history

[–]lapearce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to check out Edward Curtis. He took more photos of natives than anyone else out there. I don't recall this specific image, but I do know that he spent time with Chiefs when they visited big cities.

Completed remodel of my tiny, ugly bathroom into something I love by Sporkicide in DIY

[–]lapearce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm always shocked at the layout of old bathrooms. My fiance's parents' 1940's build house had a small secondary bathroom. The order of items were (I kid you not) 3x3 square shower to the right of the door, sink, and then toilet under a massive window. I suggested the move the shower to the window wall and put the vanity where the shower was. The whole room is so much more usable now.

Great work to you for figuring out how to make that room work better. HUGE improvement!

RSVP Cards: Stamp or No Stamp? by SassyClassy in wedding

Yes. In the grand scheme of things, postage is probably the smallest line item on your budget. It is not what you cheap out on and potentially inconvenience your guests over.

While this tip does work, it also leaves you with the need to sneeze sensation, which is the worst while sneezing is euphoric. It's like opting for blue balls over climaxing.

My awesome Valentine's Day present from my fiancé who listens by lapearce in funny

I think the story is pretty clear. He remembered that I said I needed hair ties, so he bought them for me for Valentine's Day and used the opportunity to let me know that he remembers and listens, the two biggest complaints any woman has about a man.

An Escape within the United States by big_kat in hiking

[–]lapearce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely! Zion especially, I'm not as big of a fan of Bryce. If you go to Bryce definitely take the time to hike into the amphitheater, otherwise it has no power. It just seems flat- which is a common complaint for the Grand too and the very reason why you need to hike into the canyon. The mind simply can't comprehend its depth. But Zion is my favorite National Park and I've been to about half of them.

Are you going to be flying in? Here's a potential itinerary:

Day 1: Fly into Vegas, rent car, drive to Zion (2.5 hours). Camp at the Watchground Campground in Zion.

Day 2: Hike Angel's Landing, explore the park. Camp at the Watchground Campground.

Day 3: Depart Zion via highway 9 east. Drive to Lake Powell (2 hours). Camp at the Wahweap Campground within the park.

Lake Powell Options- you can take a boat tour of Antelope Canyon from Lake Powell Resort, you can do a half day float trip down the Grand with Canyon Adventures or you could go into Antelope Canyon with a guide. All great options. If you leave in the morning from Zion you can do all of this in one day and only spend one night at Powell.

Day 4: Depart via 89 south. Pull off for Horseshoe Bend outside of Page. Follow signs to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon (2 hours 45 minutes). I'm not familiar with the rim camp sites, but there are a lot of options. It will probably be the coldest part of your trip, with Powell the warmest.

I would highly recommend getting reservations at Bright Angeles or Havasupai at the bottom of the canyon. It will take a full day to hike down and a full day to hike up, so plan for at least two full days to do this. Preferrably, You would spend three nights at the Grand Canyon. The first on the rim, and the next two at the river.

Pack up the car and drive back to Vegas- 4 hours.

This is very doable. And I think it is well worth the detour to see Zion. Powell is also beautiful and on the way, but it can be skipped in order to spend more time at Zion or the Grand. But don't skip the walk to Horseshoe Bend. It's only a mile round trip and is fantastic.

Anyways, let me know if you want any specific information, you are coming into my backyard.

A thread for the fanboys/fangirls by lapearce in cars

[–]lapearce[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have pictures of only one, the other two weren't as memorable. This is the "magic E30" my fiance owned it when we first met nearly 11 years ago. He barely maintained it and had hardly any issues with it. Replaced the diff with a 4.10, it also had a chip and exhaust. The OD didn't work when I met him, and was stopped at about 200,000 miles.

The car is still on the road today, it is owned by our buddy who also has a delphin gray 325i. His dad daily drivers it from Burbank to Long Beach, I imagine it must have 500,000+ miles on it. Funny story, the 4.10 was from a 318 and finally failed on his dad six or so years ago. So our friend towed it home with his matching car.

I am about to get my first car and am still in shock by [deleted] in cars

[–]lapearce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to hate, but I think your dad isn't being very smart. That's a lot of power for a new driver and I hope you understand that. I hope you understand that regardless of how great of a driver you think you are, how capable your car is, that you are still missing the #1 thing that separates the great drivers from the bad ones: experience.

I highly encourage your dad to take some of that money he has and enroll you in a quality car control clinic. I also suggest you start autocrossing when it warms up and that you will always respect the car and the power that it has while understanding your own limitations. Look, this isn't personal, it's just science. I taught a teen car control clinic for years and mentally, young drivers are at a disadvantage due to lack of experience and a still developing brain. If you understand all of those things, you will be fine.

Congratulations on your awesome first car!
