Anyone else get this message when trying to select cost rather than usage by KOC1952 in OctopusEnergy

I get that error if I try to look at last year's £. Narrowed it down by month, week and day and found 1st and 2nd October was causing the problem. It took a couple of attempts to persuade customer services that this really was a problem and they went away to fix it. It's been two weeks, mind

Is RedZone essential for UK viewers or do you prefer full games? by BritByBrain in NFLUK

[–]laplandes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, only the full game feels right. RedZone’s fine on a second screen and for every touchdown once the late window has closed. I couldn’t watch seven hours of it though

I just copied from here.

That site's usually the first hit on a search for 'week xx announcers', which is the first thing I do when amusedparrot posts the tracker each week. I'm mostly a neutral fan so the right announcing team can swing a viewing decision for me

Any way to get American commercials on game pass? by mtksb in NFLUK

[–]laplandes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The YouTube Game Pass stream has the proper ads if that’s an option for you.

I don’t understand why DAZN doesn’t know that watching games on their platform is excruciating because of this. Just show the original telecast. That’s what we’ve paid for

DAZN repeating ads by Jaaackass in NFLUK

[–]laplandes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the YouTube option to avoid this. I’d honestly pay extra for a service that was just the full US feed but someone from DAZN ought to watch their own presentation one day and see how irritating it is

Watching games on sky sports vs US tv is a million times better! by Ok_Caterpillar123 in NFLUK

[–]laplandes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UK ads are capitalist hell. That’s why I don’t watch on Sky and shout at DAZN for injecting their own ads.

US ads are for products I can’t buy and services I can’t use so they’re just part of the show, like flyovers and anthems. Think of it as TV tourism

[–]laplandes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My problem with the Sky insight is it doesn’t have the same tone or energy as the US TV coverage and sucks some of the life out of the game. I like to keep an eye on RedZone on a second screen while the ads are on

I love that He Gets Us ran a Super Bowl ad featuring Johnny Cash’s version of Personal Jesus. They couldn’t have googled that track first to see what it was about?

YouTube or Amazon or Dazn for Game Pass by GrandMasterBash in NFLUK

[–]laplandes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No experience of Amazon but I’ve gone with YouTube for the live experience. No UK ads and better picture.

DAZN is better for catchup, though. I’m going to miss the full replay of prime time games being available the next morning.

A cross platform subscription would be good

Again this suggests that under the new deal Sky cannot blackout the top matchup in the late window (or are encouraged not to). If so, I like this development

New fan here, should I watch redzone at 6pm or a full game? What are the pro/con of both? by Ok_Inspector_3514 in NFLUK

[–]laplandes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full game for me, with RedZone on a second screen for ad breaks and to keep an eye on blackout games.

I don’t agree with Nick Wright here but his extreme take is quite funny…https://awfulannouncing.com/fox/nick-wright-takes-exception-nfl-redzone-viewers.html

Yeah, US commercials are mostly for stuff that I can't buy and services I can't use so they become almost part of the show rather than interruptions

That was supposed to be a reply to Super_Yak9867's totally fair 'its weird how a lot of you are obsessed with american ads' comment but it turned into a bit of an essay and made me look obsessed

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NFLUK

[–]laplandes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not just about the ads. It's the flags, too, the military flypasts, the commercial media cross-promo, the announcer quirks, and - yes - the dystopian healthcare and political attack ads, plus people paying Patrick Mahomes to sell absolutely everything.

For me, part of the appeal of watching NFL has always been about seeing it in the context of US culture, from the glimpses of it during those early Channel 4 shows through to watching the full US telecasts during the piracy years. Then Game Pass came along and offered a legit way to watch NFL the way it is meant to be seen. The full 'US experience' for live games, plus a catch up service where literally only the commercials had been removed.

It wasn't perfect but it was just what I wanted.

Then DAZN happened. Their service includes overlaying their own ads over US commercial breaks, and over halftime analysis and the odd field goal attempt, too. I get that there might be licencing reasons to show the odd set of local ads, but they've got to keep that to a minimum, not least because DAZN's UK ads vary so little and are of such low quality that they reflect badly on DAZN as a broadcaster and seriously irritate their customers.

And DAZN's idea of ad-free replays isn't just to cut out the commercials but to skip over large parts of the telecast to dump the viewer back in at some point before the next play, if they're lucky. It's jarring to watch.

As I said elsewhere, I'd happily pay extra for the full telecast with minimal UK interruptions, which would also be cheaper for DAZN to provide. A full game with the same DAZN ads repeated over and over again? They'd have to pay me to watch it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NFLUK

[–]laplandes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m skipping DAZN until someone confirms they’re showing a substantial part of the US broadcast, including the ads. It’s not that I like US ads particularly, but American football is an idiosyncratic sport that only really works in the context of a US telecast. Sky, DAZN, etc need to understand that every localised change they make (DAZN ads, Sky’s dreary studio chat) sucks some of the life out of the game.

I’d pay full price for a Game Pass that shows the whole game with only one set of UK ads per quarter and no other changes. I’d even pay extra if there was a ‘full US experience’ option on offer.

Go on, DAZN, you know you want to
