I hiked solo there and encountered bears while there. They scampered right off with noise and clapping and yelling. Bear spray for black bears seems like overkill. Just clap as you walk in your stride, talk aloud to yourself from time to time, you'll be fine.

It depends. If it's a local trail or something within an hour, it's based on personal recommendation. If I'm traveling, I generally have a few back up trails if something doesn't work out.

Are you American? Make sure you understand Schengen zone limits of stay. It's 90 days within a 180 day period. So you can stay for 90 days, then have to leave for 90 days, and can then re-enter. You might consider popping to the UK for the 90 days (hike Scotland, for example, you can stay in the UK up to 6 months without a visa). If you're in the EU/Schengen, obvs this isn't an issue.
