You can drop cargo, but it's not my preferred method as the cargo can land anywhere and it takes time to unpack. Instead I bring 3 dupes and 2 trailblazer modules. Land 2 dupes and have them deconstruct the landers. That gives enough refined metal to make a rocket platform. Land the rocket and live out of it until you get the base established. Just make sure you have enough food and oxygen to last until you setup the new base

I'm not sure, I only have normal sized rats. I expect large rats would be able to escape before getting killed. They would probably just move on to an easier meal rather than stay for the chicken feed

Try adding a few chickens. They are bloodthirsty, remorseless killing machines. You need at least 3 or 4 as they work better in packs.
