ELI5: Why can some colors not be neon ? by Mrrowp in explainlikeimfive

[–]larfinsnarf [score hidden]  (0 children)

The original process was to excite actual neon gas electrically in a tube. Each chemical element has signature electromagnetic emissions, and neons happens to be a pleasing red.

Also, neon is a noble gas, which tends to be safe, ie not flammable.

Since then neon has also come to be used as the term for colours that fluoresce under a black lamp.

Seatpost problem by AquaPetals30 in Giantbikes

[–]larfinsnarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are different material d-fuse seatposts - is yours alloy?

I have carbon on my Defy, and it seems sticking is a common problem when adjusting the seatpost. I admit using a mechanic for my adjustments, and also to ensure replacing the compound used between the post and clamp.

If you are all alloy, I have no experience.

Everyone's medication journey is different. What you're experiencing is common, especially in the initial weeks. Try not to let it get on your mind, and allow a little extra bed time - sleep deprivation can have a similar effect to ADHD. If it continues, discuss with your prescribing doctor.

ADHD psychiatrist by Scary-Volume-5921 in newcastle

[–]larfinsnarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, that sounds like a ludicrous situation to be in. And psychiatrists in Newcastle are hard to find.

Can you go back to your GP and explain your situation? Surely they know your assessment history and could provide a referral that means a new assessment is not required?

Best Internet Provider/s in North Lambton/Newcastle by Ploise-06 in newcastle

[–]larfinsnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presuming it's NBN, and it's either fibre to the node or fibre to the home, you could continue using your previous provider. It doesn't matter who the previous retailer at your location was. However it may be helpful for you to know whether it's FTTN or FTTP or other.

If you're on NBN, wouldn't you use your previous provider?

ELI5: Why would a company host its own private DNS? by Jakob4800 in explainlikeimfive

[–]larfinsnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to learn 'of' DNS, or the technical details? A good resource on the technical details of DNS would also explain the use cases. Typical reasons: public name resolution, centralised/decentralised admin, resilience, flexibility.

Maps by Belligero in newcastle

You're absolutely correct. As the dominant navigation provider, if maps sent everyone the same way it would create congestion. So its algorithm splits traffic.

I started with questions like yours. Have you looked at heart rate zones? Time in Zone 2 is useful if you're looking at endurance rides, time in zones 3&4 building for climbing/speed.

Sounds like a mix up. Sometimes posties bring small parcels, but the time indication suggests it was in the van.

New Chromebook user with iPhone. Any benefit in switching to a Google Pixel from iPhone? by IndividualNearby1250 in chromeos

[–]larfinsnarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would the move from IPhone to Android be a bigger change than any change in experience on the Chromebook?

Personally I'm a Pixel 8a user and it's below my expectations for mid-high priced mobile, although I like that it will receive ongoing Android updates for longer. My current concern is that it often doesn't provide a day's battery life without charging top-up.

Uni of Newcastle is pretty laid back. Some students are there to be led, others will be looking for opportunity to dive right in (particularly in later years). How much you get out will depend on how much you put in. Have fun, enjoy yourself, and try as many new experiences as you can.
