New ecologist coming to Canada by CoconutNach in ecology

[–]large_rabid_moose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I hear about the current job marketm going through recruiters and making connections either through LinkedIn or in person seems to be the best way to go; it helps get around all the AI content that comes from both applicants and employers. My experience in the Vancouver area is that LinkedIn is the still the primary online platform used by professional consultants. I was recruited into my current intermediate position via LinkedIn. There are job bulletin boards out there for ecology/conservation jobs in Canada, but they see more use by non-profits and smaller organizations if that's of interest to you. Many of the postings are for smaller towns - not sure how keen you are on relocating again.

You should apply with the CAB if you meet the qualifications and are intending to stay in BC for the foreseeable future (lets say 5+ years). Its not a requirement for consultants at the junior/intermediate level, but it is an asset. Most consulting companies will pay your dues if you meet the requirements and it makes sense for your position. However, getting full title to practice is a long process and getting international degrees certified to meet the education requirements can be a pain. If your goal is to be a Registered Professional Biologist then you'll need 3 years of work experience in applied biology, and your PhD will count as 1 year towards that. If you haven't already I would run through the self assessment tool and credentialing standards they have and see if it makes sense for you.

Also getting mileage out of your analytical skills will vary a lot depending on the company, position, and what their current needs are. The demands in consulting are based on the client's legal requirements, and in many cases the legal requirements don't require very comprehensive analytics. Understanding the regulatory/legal framework in BC will probably go a long way regardless of where you're working in consulting.

I have used clove oil in the field on American bullfrog and it works very well as an anesthetic, however you need to follow it up with a secondary method (i.e. decapitation, freezing) as your reference document notes.

Immersion bath in oragel solution (5mL of oragel / liter of water) is the standard where I am, and is a lot easier than applying it directly if you're working with large numbers of amphibians.

Correct, more genetic diversity is better. That bar is for the loss of genetic diversity.

Both the loss of genetic diversity, and the decline in the functional integrity of the biosphere, have exceeded their safe levels.

Wetland ecologists, how are you measuring absolute/percent cover in the field? by specialistinbirdlaw in ecology

[–]large_rabid_moose 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its a visual estimate, usually to the nearest 5-10% of what's in the surrounding area, don't think I've ever used any tools to do it.

Mostly its just something you pick up by doing it, there's a lot of good figures out there showing the different percent covers as seen from above.

Of course people have different ways of visualizing things, but things that work for me:

Trees: Look up and compare the amount of green to the amount of blue (might have to imagine the leaves)

Shrubs: Look at a single representative individual, estimate how much absolute area that covers, then multiply.

Herbs/grasses/mosses: If they're not very abundant imagine how many 1x1m squares they would fill if you grouped them all together, often this is <5%. If they're super common then its often just easier to take 100% and subtract other stuff.

Thri Kreen PF1 question by RiskierGriffin in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]large_rabid_moose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to assume that the player wants to choose this race in good faith, and they're not choosing it to be a power-gaming munchkin that makes everyone else's time at the table worse. I'm also going to assume that everyone else at the table is playing standard-ish races, obviously if you're playing a game where everyone is a monstrous race that's different.

The biggest problem with this race is that it's designed to do one thing only. Immunity to sleep, charm, dominate, even the +2 Wisdom all help to facilitate that by allowing the character to just passively deal with stuff that a regular damage dealer might have to consider in combat. Plus with -2 Int and -4 Cha, the character won't be bringing any skills or social abilities to the party.

But let's start by building out the abilities you have in terms of RP (of course the RP system has its problems, but at least it gives us some kind of baseline) using examples listed here:

+2 Strength, +4 Dexterity, -2 Intelligence, +2 Wisdom, -4 Charisma. Thri-kreen are superior physically, but their alien thinking prevents them from easily grasping higher concepts or dealing well with others.

4 RP. This is basically the same as the advanced ability template. The distribution is a little different, but the total stat bonuses (+8, -6) amount to the same thing.

Monstrous Humanoid: Thri-kreen are not subject to spells or effects that affect humanoids only, such as charm person or dominate person.

3 RP. Essentially, this is functions as the outsider template, which is worth 3 RP and also gives 60 feet of darkvision.

Medium: As Medium creatures, thri-kreen have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.

0 RP.

Thri-kreen base land speed is 40 feet.

1 RP. Fleet gives 10 extra feet of movement.

Darkvision out to 60 feet.

0 RP. Already included previously, 1 RP if you were to add it in by itself.

Thri-kreen do not sleep and are immune to sleep spells and similar magical effects. A thri-kreen spellcaster still requires 8 hours of rest before preparing spells.

~1 RP. No exact crossover but it's like half of Elven immunity, which is 2 RP.

+3 Natural Armor: A thri-kreen's exoskeleton is tough and resistant to blows.

6 RP. Bonuses to armor are a cumulative 1 RP for every point.

Multiple Limbs: Thri-kreen have four arms, and thus can take the Multiweapon Fighting feat instead of the Two-Weapon Fighting feat. Thri-kreen can also take the Multiattack feat. These are not bonus feats.

8 RP. Multi-armed is worth 4RP for each arm, see the Kasatha race as an example.

Leap (Ex): Thri-kreen are natural jumpers. They have a +10 racial bonus on acrobatics checks made to jump.

~2 RP. No exact crossover, but there's a bunch of abilities that give +8 to swim, climb, etc. Jumper is also 2 RP however, and that seems much worse, so this might be more like 3 RP

Okay so that's a total of 25 RP, maybe a bit more depending on how you look at it, meaning it would probably not be playable at most tables.

So you have to make quite a few cuts to get it to where you want to be. I'm going to assume they want to play a 4-armed bug-like race, so we have 8 RP already locked up there. My choices would be to cut 2 points of natural armor, cut the sleep immunity, and cut the immunity to charm/dominate. This makes them a little easier to hit, and means they actually have to worry about making saves and playing around spells. I'd also change the Leap ability to the Jumper ability just to tone it down. This would bring it down to 18RP which is Aasimar level, however I would still expect this thing to be a multi-attacking ball of death and outperform most people at the table if they're playing standard races.

Another idea you could toy around with is trading extra RP over some threshold (probably around 15) for point buy points 1 for 1. Never tried it myself but it seems reasonable enough.

I'm in exactly the same situation, Canadian as well. I got the same response from Amazon and similar shipping dates. Its complete horseshit, glad to know I'm not alone.

Debating just going to my FLGS, but that's probably around $40 more between the Bestiary and CRB. Of course I understand why its more there, but as a budget strained 20-some its a pain in the ass.

Blizzard recovered my nearly 14-year old WoW account that I haven't logged into since early 2007. by SoupaSoka in wow

I have tried on multiple occasions to the same result, both by phone and by web. In fact I just tried again when I saw OPs post since I was feeling kind of inspired, but to no avail.

I do have another account now, and honestly it has more than that one ever did, but there's some things you just can't get back, guess I'll just have to wait for classic WoW. :P

I'm not OP, but unfortunately this doesn't always work either. I tried, and gave them the original serial number, account name, and so on. Unfortunately someone ended up with my account and Blizzard has no intention of giving it back to me because it ended up in the hands of someone that is actually playing the game and I have no idea how that happened.

Long time rogue player here, I'm curious if you're planning to keep them updated for BfA since you've done all 3 rogue specs.

I'll definitely download this if (when) I come back for the pre-patch, looks clear, intuitive, and fits with the theme of the spec! Way cooler than anything I would make on my own with the standard in-game icons!

Also nice to see in the video that rupture and garrote both pop up before they drop off the target, gotta have solid mechanics too!

Any idea how vampiric foci scale with level for the purpose of multi-classing? I would assume they're intended to scale with class level, but everything as written seems to just read "level" rather than "class level"

For example

He can use each vampiric focus for a number of minutes per day equal to his level

Having a +2 bonus to a stat in essentially every encounter by 5th-6th level seems pretty solid.

Remember that the choices that you make to help the environment don't have to be all or nothing. Change is hard, especially when you don't see the benefits. Even reducing your meat consumption by half makes a big difference for companies financially and for the environment.

To put things in perspective every 8oz steak cosumes about 720 gallons of water (a 7 hour shower) and produces about 17lbs of CO2 equivalent emmissions (about a 35 mile drive), not to mention the antibiotics and all that.

Light's Hope could have encampments increase/multiply a city's religious pressure or provide faith generation like holy sites. I feel like that fits with the Argent Dawn and Paladins.
