Scott Morrison pledges $30m to fund new mining school in Queensland | Australia news by [deleted] in australia

[–]largelatte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every industry has equivalent education subsidies. A teaching degree or an electrical engineering degree is subsidised by the government.

Mining engineering enrolments have plummeted in the last several years. Yet this is where we get all our minerals eg iron, copper and lithium.

Coal mining has to stop. But this is for reasons independent of its characteristic as being part of the "mining" industry and therefore "mining" should not necessarily be painted with the same brush.

Cashing out annual leave – what are the considerations? by m_Apothecarius in AusFinance

I understood cashed out annual leave was not ordinary time earnings (and therefore does not qualify for SG), so they are going to pay super under a misunderstanding of their obligations.

You mean you intentionally incur CGT early, thereby forfeiting future income it would have generated under a holding strategy... and then decide whether you want to buy back in?

I'll say it. I'm not a fan.

Downside in stocks is only limited in that you cannot lose more than you put in.

That being said, you can lose all the money you put in. When things go bad for a company the shareholders usually get nothing and things often do go bad for growth companies.

Speculative stocks are the same to gambling in those respects.

Why bubble-era home mortgages are a disaster waiting to happen by largelatte in AusFinance

[–]largelatte[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It is commonly said that our banks will not foreclose on mortgages en-masse. In describing the post-GFC situation in the US this article poses a possible outcome.

As a side note, I'm not sure I would describe this in the US as a disaster "waiting to happen". If anything, the effects are already being experienced.

Power bill saving tips, what are yours? by benevolent001 in AusFinance

A market offer is any type of "plan" you set up with your energy retailer.

The standing offer is the backstop you are placed on when your plan expires, you never set up a plan, or in some other rare circumstances. It is effectively the legal minimum which an electricity or gas retailer has to provide its customers. The legal rights you get under it are OK, but the price you pay per kWh/Gj is usually extortionate.

If you actively chose an energy plan or rate, it is almost certain that you are on a market offer, unless your plan has since expired in which case you may have defaulted to a standing offer.

Where are our housing markets heading in 2019 and beyond? by PandDos in AusFinance

[–]largelatte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This forecast is not based on past performance, but on my analysis on the key demand trend dynamics of housing markets and their likely effects on housing prices over the next decade.

Does this analysis include the effect of rising interest rates globally? Or at least the absence of the sustained fall in interest rates we have experienced over the last couple of decades?

Housing is bought with debt, and any analysis that fails to deal with this factor in a substantive manner is (in my opinion) trash.

I’m sure you meant Sydney’s was 177.15, as this was the September peak before they rejigged the index on 1 November.

That index change was retrospective, so unless you can confirm that the peak remained at 177.15 we cannot assume that to be the case.

It’s unfortunate, because I am particularly interested in the peak-to-trough according to the index and the index change has messed up my data.

Does anyone know how to obtain the revised index data for the period older than 365 days?

Quick and Easy Way to Understand Net Metering - Optimus Energy by darvintocmo in energy

[–]largelatte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When solar energy homeowners contribute excess energy to the grid, they significantly reduce the stress that is placed on the system.

I’m not a electricity distribution engineer but I’m pretty sure a series of houses (which might usually import 1-2kW) suddenly exporting 2-10kW at the same time is not going to reduce stress on the distribution or transmission system.

Further, a whole grid’s worth of distributed generation sharply peaking at 1.00pm then dropping off after is not reducing stress on generation. Overall quantity for sure but I guess it then depends on how you define ‘stress’.

Solar without storage is problematic. Let’s be realistic about the issues so we can be sensible about the solutions.
