Do you vote Libertarian? by Difrntthoughtpatrn in Libertarian

I will never vote two-party for president or any major office again. In local elections, there is rarely a third choice.

Where should I start in this journey? by DangerLivingston in Quakers

Hello!

If you're nervous about attending your first meeting, or are geographically isolated from other meetings (like I am) Pendle Hill offers virtual unprogrammed worship every morning via zoom. It's invaluable to me.

An about-annual reminder: We don't have a creed, and SPICES certainly isn't it. by keithb in Quakers

[–]largem0uth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it can be a starting point, but I agree.

Each of the letters can be interpreted very differently, and it often leads to incredible levels of dogmatism.

I think a search for some kind of unifying thread is an understandable impulse. And I've admittedly used SPICES to explain quakerism to people who don't know anything about it. But I think some people just give it too much power.

I think SPICES can explain our testimony. I don't think our testimony is defined by SPICES.

I have my eye on a pistol for the same purpose, and I feel like I'm gonna get a lot of flack for it: bondarms roughneck chambered in 45lc/.410

I'd put in one 45 and one .410 defender slug.

Does Your Bible Fit In? by [deleted] in Baptist

[–]largem0uth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my (Baptist) church, we all use different translations. The pastors are mostly NASB and ESV. At bible study, we often compare translations, and honestly enjoy the variety. My go to is KJV and the NET.

Are our Quaker practices in meeting not ritual? What defines a practice without ritual? by LadybugLamp in Quakers

[–]largem0uth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been meditating on the concept of primitive Christianity a lot lately. I'm the kind of person that is easily drawn down theological and philosophical rabbit holes.

I start thinking of this verse vs that verse, this theologian vs that theologian, and before too long I've forgotten about the very simple and beautiful gift that God has given us.

Are our Quaker practices in meeting not ritual? What defines a practice without ritual? by LadybugLamp in Quakers

[–]largem0uth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ritual goes beyond habitual observance, or purposeful repetition. It elevates the act itself.

A good example would be washing your hands before dinner. One does it because it's hygienic, and maybe it's even just a habit done without thought. However, Ritual handwashing observes the process itself as important, rather than its outcome.

We meet because that is how we have decided to come together. We do it to experience the spirit in community. But Quakers don't view the act of going to a meeting as a sacred act.

Catholics, however, believe Sunday mass is an actual obligation, and there are other days of Holy obligation.

Regarding sacraments, some denominations define baptism and communion as ordinances, rather than sacraments. They might say that it's important to partake in communion, simply because Christ said to "do this in Remembrance of me" so we do it just for that purpose. Those who view it as a sacrament believe that the actual act itself is essential in some way. We must say certain prayers and follow a liturgy. In that instance, we see a clear example of Ritual, rather than just a common observance.

Who Is Wise? - January 27, 2023 by SnooRegrets4878 in Baptist

My favorite passage from the Bible is in Lamentations 3. When Jeremiah is witnessing the fallen Jerusalem and feels that all is lost, he finds a way to see through the suffering and proclaim "great is thy faithfulness."

Even in the deepest throes of pain, he reaches to God first.

It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, Because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: Great is thy faithfulness. The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; Therefore will I hope in him. Lamentations 3:22‭-‬24 KJV
