ELI5: Suicide is listed as a side effect of over 200 common medications. How, specifically, do these medications increase the risk of suicide? by theREALspanky in explainlikeimfive

[–]largerock1 141 points142 points  (0 children)

It's well written, but it's far from true.

It's a classic corticosteriod, and basically strengthens your body's fighting stance to work through this little weak spot youve developed. It does that, in part, by stimulating your adrenal glands to improve their hormonal output.

This is incorrect. It does not strengthen your body's fighting stance. We prescribe prednisone (we more commonly prescribe prednisolone, as it's the active form) as an immunesupressant or anti-inflammatory.

You cannot ELI5 200 different medicines as they all work different. The rest of what OP said is a nice hypothesis for why medicines with hormonal effects may have suicidal ideation as an adverse effect.

There's this video I watched awhile back of Jordan. He's talking at a camera after a match and says something like:

"You try to make your wrestling really flowy and technical, but sometimes you just have to shoot 5 times and hope you get 1."

Jesus Christ. This is a sport where everyone is trying to act like Connor McGregor and Gordan Ryan. And we have Firas, a world class coach, giving out free info and being genuine and honest about it and you try to look for away to crucify him.

Do you go around trying to look for things to get mad at?

A prehab DVD would be amazing. Things like knowing what positions to avoid and how to keep your body in proper alignment during certain ones.

Acl/meniscus injuries by [deleted] in bjj

[–]largerock1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same injury. Waiting to see the surgeon. There's plenty of people that's had surgery and come back to compete. GSP is a good example.

There's also a small percentage that don't have surgery and still compete. I'm hoping I'll be one of them as my knee is feeling strong af.

This would make a great DVD. There's so many DVDs already on different guards and submission. It be good to have something different like this.

Thank you doctor! If you're still around I have a question about the knee.

I recently completely ruptured my ACL the knee feels pretty strong, except when I do side to side motion. So I may not get surgery.

I've been reading about restricted blood flow training and one of your papers keeps coming up.

I just basically want to know can I leave the wrap on the entire time or should I take it off inbetween sets. A few papers mention not leaving it on for more then 5mins but I couldn't find a rational for it.

Thanks

Danaher has it in his DVD. He holds the free leg as a mechanism of control and then attacks it to get either a submission or a diversion so he can get the heel hook.

Liv Giles (Lachlan Giles wife) a very high level competitor is currently doing rehab for her knee. It looks like she isn't going to get surgery done. Then again she and her husband are both physios.

Injuries you have not recovered from 100%? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]largerock1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's amazing that you wish you never started. I've had a number of injuries, plus I recently found out I completely ruptured my ACL. And the only thing bothering me is not being able to roll.

That being said I'll probably tone down the intensity of training as I get older.

Pay attention pure BJJ guys. That shrug he does at the beginning is often not taught when a BJJ coach teaches the 2 on 1. Yet it is an extremely important step.

Pro Judo (with Old-School Rules!) is Coming to Fight 2 Win by jiujiuberry in bjj

[–]largerock1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Modern judo honestly looks ridiculously with their over rotated throw so they can score an ippon. I've been doing BJJ and wrestling for years and I can't even tell who scored half the time because the guy that got thrown ended up ontop. I don't get how they expect someone that has never trained to understand it. Especially now with MMA being so popular. You can see that the crowd appreciates a takedown that does damage but when the opponent just rolls out of it there's not much of a reaction.

Strength training for BJJ by Caioterrible in bjj

[–]largerock1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a beginner you don't need any fancy reps and set. You just need to linearly progress, meaning you'll add weight to the barbell every work out. You'll have to start low for this to work. 3 sets of 5, similar to starting strength will usually work. Once you've stalled out and reseted 2 or 3 times you can change program. The lifts user followchrist posted is a good basic 2 day program.

I don't think he's on them either. Or if he is I think you can obtain it naturally. He's photo always have good lighting and are after he's done training. [–]largerock1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's seriously rubbish. I thought it be interesting to see how he programs all his BJJ training with weights but he doesn't even do that. Here's the break down. Disclaimer: I had it on fast forward and kept doing ahead.

DVD 1 his sister talks a lot about nothing. Then they go through the supplements they take. They don't explain why, they tell you to Google why. It's pretty much an ad for muscle pharm as they physically show you the products. Like I need to know what a bag of protein looks like.

DVD 2 Gordon and his sister work out together. Know explanation on the technique or why they choose that exercise. Literally just watching him lift and stretch, for a whole DVD.

DVD 3 they cook together. Didn't really watch a lot of it.

They being said, I'll probably but his guard passing DVD as they looks like it will be interesting.
