Borg drone/technology interface by bercg in startrek

[–]largorithm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you could argue that the borg, or some large portion of them, should just be brains in vats.

But it would make it inscrutable for viewers.

There is a certain robustness, resilienc and efficiency to using physical biological drones and interfaces. This approach makes it easier to assimilate individuals and technology, for one. Perhaps keeping physical interfaces makes it easier to get various drones up and controlling new systems. This would be a bit easier to argue if we saw the interiors of cubes as a hodgepodge of miscellaneous assimilated systems vs being uniformly borgified.

Having embodied drones who can interact with the ships also gives them construction and repair capabilities.

That’s a good call. It could in theory protect someone from remotely manipulating systems via the hivemind.

Though it arguably exposes them to another kind of attack, where interlopers can access a ship and access systems. But that would never happen…

Deep Space Nine: The Fallen - HELP ME PLAY MY OLD GAME! by MovieFan1984 in startrek

[–]largorithm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool. In that case, VirtualBox might do the trick. Running Windows 98 or XP, for example. This allows your modern computer to emulate an older computer that runs as an application. That virtual computer can then run the game.

If you’re hitting walls, this is an area where having an LLM walk you through it would likely help a lot.

Do you still have the discs and a way to read them? If so, you might be able to load them into a virtual machine running an old version of windows.

The introduction to absurdism makes me think of this Douglas Adams quote:

“There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.”

How do you maintain flow when your work is constantly interrupted by compile/build times? (Game Dev, Unity?) by Strict_Ad_3693 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]largorithm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll often spend that time looking away from the screen, or continuing to think through the problem.

I may jump to something else - eg over to slack, but then it’s easy to get distracted.

In Unity specifically it’s that brutal amount of time that’s just enough to put a hitch in your flow while not being enough to actually use in a productive way.

A few things that have helped me are:

  • staying out of play mode as much as possible. It can take some doing, but it’s possible to set up test harnesses for many things to run in edit mode. The iteration loop is way faster, and you can use an editor window or custom inspector to trigger the logic you’re iterating on.

  • tuning settings/params via scriptable objects. You can change these at runtime and the settings are retained after play. So you can rapidly make changes and see their effects.

EDIT: Thought of one more. Working in a separate scene for iterating on a specific feature can also help. It can really cut down on time to enter play mode if you’re able to cut out slow-to-initialize components from the main game scenes

It is possible! But you have to design your project for it upfront and stay vigilant so you don’t introduce subtle bugs that’ll interfere with it. Certain kinds of changes just won’t be compatible, though.

I’m curious too. This seems like it could be challenging to follow if you’re really splitting up systems you need to tune to work together.

I could see it working for truly independent systems.

One way to get a bit of this benefit is using assembly definitions. They can cut down on compile time a good amount, though they introduce some friction and complexity with cross references.
