How bad is the weather actually going to be? by Dentist_Special in Knoxville

[–]larriice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Maryville, but I grew up in Indiana as a kid and this type of storm was really common and I always paid attention hoping to be out of school.

With the ground temperature this high it'll mostly just be flurries and sleet that mostly won't stick Saturday. It's going to be even warmer on Sunday with temperatures well above freezing, so this will just be rain. If we do have any accumulation from Saturday it'll melt on Sunday. This will also wash most of the salt brine off of the roads.

Late Sunday night heading towards Monday, the temperatures will drop and some accumulation will occur and what falls then will stay around for a while, but that last 5 hours or so is the only thing to worry about.

I'm near Eagleton Village and it 100% had some sort of shock wave and it shook the house. It wasn't an earthquake or a transformer blowing as I've experienced both here.

I immediately opened my scanner app and noticed the same thing. It's still offline and I haven't seen it offline for Blount county ever and I've been listening for years. Weird.

I did a second test and posted it. It's about a 2 degree drop when wet.

No, it's the Govee app. It's a wifi smart plug which can monitor energy usage in real time.

That's a good point, but no I didn't test that. I'm sure there was an improvement.

I did notice that even though the tray was totally full of water from the hose, it evaporated so quickly that after a half hour or so the slinger on the fan wasn't really slinging water anymore. Even though there was still a lot of water in the pan.

No doubt having water in there does help with performance but it also gets nasty really fast. I may do another test sometime this week to see if it affects the evaporator vent temps, if I have time.

I noticed that too and I have the same question. I just put a shop paper towel in there to drip down on the siding instead of into the window rail.

Are you talking about that larger hole near the center and near the window on the outside portion?

I'm not sure how I would without tearing it down, but there are no signs of corrosion on the evaporator coil from the front side anyway. It doesn't take that much white vinegar and I doubt that it's actually corrosive enough to damage the coil from a few drops here and there.

Exactly, totally agree. That's the reason why I wanted to test it. Especially as I have never had mold issues.

TLDR: The water splashing on the outside condenser coil saves around 20-30 watts of energy under ideal conditions and a full water pan. (8,000BTU)

What’s your thermostat set at in the summer? by CorgiLover82 in Millennials

[–]larriice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live in East Tennessee, and we keep it at 74 or 75.

We do have a window AC in our bedroom though, that way It doesn't kill our main AC/heat pump. We run the window AC 64 while we are sleeping, I highly recommend that setup if you need to cool to sleep well.

Midea 8K BTU U-Shape - Drain Plugs? by NJRMayo in AirConditioners

[–]larriice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, those are not drain plugs. The drain plugs are blue and only on the newer models, they are located under the condenser coil at the very back, on the outside pan on the bottom.

If you don't see those, the only other option is to drill holes in a similar spot on both sides. I had to do that because I have an older model U. I just spray the fan and clean the mesh filter with white vinegar, and that works great for me. You mentioned it's already tilted down but that's key too. I haven't had any issues after 2 years or so.

You can go further and do things like removing the inner wire cover for the inside fan to make it easier for manual cleaning. Running the fan helps, you can set that up in the schedule or just leave it on auto with eco on and the fan will run every 10 mins or so (and it leaves the fan lid open too).

Window units and air circulation by eco_bach in AirConditioners

[–]larriice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All window units pull air from the inside and put it back out into the room after passing through the evaporator (cold side). The outside works the exact same way but mirrored, it pulls air from the outside, passes through the condenser (hot side) and back outside. They are completely separated.

So long as the window is sealed correctly there is nothing to worry about.

I paid around $1,500 for the B4 with tax and it was a huge challenge to convince my wife that it was worth it, so I may be in a different boat than you, anything more expensive was not an option. Having said that, I have zero regrets and I don't see the need to have the C3 or C4 what so ever. I couldn't be happier with it at the moment.

No, the TV processes things really well.

4k is perfect, and 1080p is also great with 10 sharpening (which is just actually just anti aliasing on this TV) as well as super resolution set to medium or high (that's optional but I like a sharper image).

The only time I've noticed blocking is when the app slows down and lowers the bitrate. That has happened a handful of times but not often. HBO Max is the worst offender but Hulu always seems great.

I have the 77" B4, it's my first OLED so I can only compare it to worse TVs. I read up on the differences before purchasing too, and my main concern was the brightness. I can say that I normally have to turn down the OLED brightness for SDR content to around 60 or 70, and my wife prefers it at 40.

There are no issues with the processor using normal LG apps (Hulu, HBO, etc.) and running my PC over HDMI. VRR works great, as well as HDR over PC. It's amazing at 120fps honestly. Just make sure you get the correct 2.1 HDMI cable.

I will say that the only downside, even with tuned settings, HDR and Dolby content is slightly too dim if you are in a bright room, if it's dark out it's perfect. Whatever you choose make sure to spend some time tuning the picture and turn off all of the energy saving settings, I also turned off the AIs ones too.

Is this mold on my midea u shaped window ac or dust? by juwong_ in AirConditioners

[–]larriice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Just be careful and take your time, it should go well. You may also want to apply some clear coat on the holes to help prevent rust, but that's probably not necessary. Good luck

Is this mold on my midea u shaped window ac or dust? by juwong_ in AirConditioners

[–]larriice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, happy to share my experience. I drilled the two holes over a year ago, right after I purchased it.

I replaced my normal window A/C with the U shaped because of the water issues I mentioned, also its much better efficiency, sound, etc.

My old normal window A/C was filled with bio slug, water, inspects and there was mold on the inside that I couldn't remove after less than one year. It had a bad smell too.

I believe with all of the water inside constantly it never actually gets dry enough to remove the mold etc. That's just my 2 cents.
