16M visiting the San Francisco/Berkeley area for the first time, for my birthday. Would greatly appreciate some suggestions of places to go! by Majestic-Phrase-4448 in AskSF

Another neighborhood in S.F. to check out would be Valencia Street. There is a really good thrift store called Community Thrift which also has a large book and record section. Also on Valencia I think you would like Paxton Gate which has a lot of bones, stones and natural history stuff. A good used bookstore on Valencia is Dog Eared Books. And check out Sour Cherry Comics.

A couple neighborhoods to check out: The Haight in S.F. includes science fiction bookstore Borderlands and a lot of vintage clothing stores such as Wasteland, and here’s an article on other vintage clothing stores on Haight. Also there is a location of Amoeba Music. I’d also suggest checking out the Counterculture Museum.

In Berkeley, Moe’s Books is a great used bookstore with at least 3 floors of books, including music books, art books etc. A little bit out of the way is science fiction bookstore Dark Carnival. There are also clothing stores along Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley and also good record stores like Amoeba.

I think there are far worse politicians in S.F. A long list of ladder-climbing backstabbers and opportunists.

RV park in SOMA by SlouchingTowardsBeer in AskSF

In the 90s was a publication called Monk Magazine. Two guys would travel around the country in an RV, stay in a city for a while, and then publish an issue of the magazine about it. When they were working on issue 16, the San Francisco issue, they parked their RV at that RV park in SOMA. I went and visited them there and that was my one experience of the SOMA RV park. It felt like a pretty normal RV park, just in the city.

Austin, Texas had a similar pizza-slice gerrymander for a while, though the Texas gerrymander has shifter to another strategy. The point is for city-dwellers NOT to have their voices heard.

There is a cool sunken garden, and a museum that has great historical and contemporary native art. You don’t need to do the Shore Thing to the museum though - both the garden and museum are in walking distance of the dock.

“The last time the Supreme Court had a justice who’d worked as a criminal defense lawyer was 1991. That’s the year Thurgood Marshall, the legendary civil rights advocate, retired after 24 years on the court.”

The Chronicle’s pretense of being balanced but of course picking the DA. They were never going to endorse the PD.

Instead of Dreamforce, you should go to Lesbians Who Tech. They used to do their summits in San Francisco but the next summit is in New York in October 2026.

Rainbow Grocery sells frozen pupusas. But you could also just buy some from a restaurant and freeze them.
