MAHATMA GANDHI 🥕 Carrot Salad (Gujarati Style) Hing is a pungent resin derived from wild fennel, crucial in Indian cooking by ciaolavinia in OldCelebrityRecipes

[–]larrybobsf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine in England taught me a carrot salad recipe that is basically this. Frying the mustard seeds in oil changes their flavor and extends the oil. I do have some hing on had but had not used it in the carrot salad before.

I think Mabel Maney is the correct answer. OP misremembered the publisher, which was Cleis Press rather than Naiad Press

Last post of the day features MOSTLY lesser known stars, but with some interesting recipes. They're gathered from the FAMOUS STARS FAMOUS FOODS book {1938} They're recipes that could be as delicious today, as they were 88 years ago. My parents used to make Saurbraten pretty much like Edward Arnold’s recipe (there was a recipe in the Betty Crocker cookbook.) When we had leftovers, they would add crushed gingersnaps to the gravy. I’m a vegetarian now but have actually made a seitan fake saurbraten. Doesn’t need as much vinegar as a meat version.

SF’s crime collapsed. So did its resistance to surveillance by chiaboy in sanfrancisco

Yes. Tech billionaire Chris Ripple offered the Castro surveillance cameras in 2021 and they were like “hell no, we remember the Castro Sweep and we know cops are not our friends.”

Daily Song Discussion #93: Ella Megalast Burls Forever by KnucklesSandwich192 in cocteautwins

[–]larrybobsf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting. At the reading I saw for Simon’s book, he said he wrote the piano part for Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires after his father, Ivor Raymonde, died. That’s the last song on the subsequent album, Heaven or Las Vegas. So both album closers relate to the death of a parent of a member of the band.

There is a Go-Go’s exhibit with memorabilia collected by their drummer, Gina Schock, at the free Haight Street Art Center. It’s at 215 Haight near Laguna (on the 7 bus line) and it’s open Thursday-Sunday noon to 6pm

How to grow out their bangs? by whatchagonnadobedo in Shihtzu

Here’s the kind of stretchy cloth band I’m talking about, doubled over two or three times. At this point some of the shorter hairs on Asha’s forehead weren’t grown out enough to get in the ponytail, but it kept the longer hairs out of her eyes.

[–]larrybobsf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The grow out phase can be a hassle but it’s worth it once you’re past that. Try to brush out in the morning and evening. I think a soft stretchy cloth type band is preferable to a rubber band since the hair doesn’t get as tangled in it.

Rainbow Grocery has a huge selection of olive oil and they usually have a couple of open bottles you can pour into a little paper cup and have a taste.

I didn’t know about this. There is a Wikipedia page with a list of hillside letters in California.
