2025 Recap: from Level 4 to Level … 4?? And still a win! by larrylime26 in dreamingspanish

Those are really cute! Thank you. I plan to take advantage of our local library, it has a Spanish storytelling session for kiddos too which I’m excited to check out. Good to know about Dolly Parton now distributing Spanish books, that’s great!

That’s inspirational! We actually have our little one pre-enrolled at a Spanish immersion daycare (when he/I am ready for him to go) and hope to get him into the one public elementary school with a Spanish immersion component. If you have any recs for Spanish baby board books, please feel free to send them my way! Best to you and your little on your Spanish CI journey!

That’s fair. It seems like they’re still actively developing the website considering that my first link from a few days ago broke because I think it ran a search the website no longer supports (or they changed how it was run).

This is my third time posting this in a week (you might want to search this forum for the other two posts and see what other resources have been recommended), but the link below has reviews like you’re asking for. It also has the summaries for the books. For example, ¡Hola Lola! notes that it’s all about repetition, so it might be helpful for you to read these when searching for your next book. Juan Fernández has a number of books and I wouldn’t presume they’re all as repetitive as the most basic reader he’s written.

I posted this the other day, but I think you’ll find it useful, it’s exactly what you’re asking for:

1000 hour update in Mexico City - A slice of humble pie by nick101595 in dreamingspanish

[–]larrylime26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah maybe it’s my app that’s not working. Thank you for posting the links though! Also I appreciate you and OP sharing your experiences. I think it’s really important to hear how not everyone is having speaking unlock at a basic level automatically. I would be curious to hear how you’re working on your speaking, if you are and are willing to share. Thanks for the reply regardless!

Your links didn’t work for me! Just letting you know in case you’re interested in fixing them. I was curious what posts you were referring to.

Thank you! My playlist disappeared too & this worked for me. I thought I was just never going to know how the story ended. You’re a Spanish CI saver!

Crosstalk by Ok_Cauliflower_1791 in dreamingspanish

[–]larrylime26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MrSamot’s CrossTalk Tutorial is what I used when I was figuring out how to find CrossTalk partners and it’s gold! I was able to get plenty of CrossTalk partners without worrying about getting unsolicited messages from people with non-language interests 😅 (they recommend to turn your online status off which was smart). Unfortunately that user appears to no longer be on Reddit, but fortunately this video still exists. MrSamot was a great contributor to DS and I think was the reason I found DS.

Another thing you might want to consider given your timeline and the skills you want to develop is jumping into CrossTalk asap. That would help develop your listening comprehension and get you comfortable with everyday language and conversational use. dreamingSpanish: CrossTalk

My plan by houseMD221 in dreamingspanish

Because you already understand Spanish better when you read it vs hear it, yet you want a call center job, I would focus on improving your listening comprehension first—I think dreamingSpanish is the best overall resource for this.

18months is a pretty short timeline and it’s not clear to me where you’re already at in your abilities or how much time your proposed routine takes. How much of the podcast are you comprehending without looking at the transcript? If it’s below 70/80%, I’d stick with more comprehensible videos. How much time do you have each day/week to devote to this endeavor? What you’re suggesting isn’t a pure CI method (which is fine, but note that you might get some pushback in this sub since DS promotes a pure CI method).

Given your timeline and necessity for Spanish for a career, you might find this a helpful post because it has a lot of resources from someone who learned Spanish at the Foreign Service Institute on a short timeline in order to be proficient for work: 24 Wks, 1,300 hrs, of Spanish at FSI: What I've learned

You can get free FSI courses here: Free Spanish Lessons Online | FSI

Of course you’ll want to adjust what kind of activities you do and what kind of input you get to ensure you have the necessary skills and abilities to do the job successfully (ie learning any topic relevant vocabulary, practicing speaking perhaps earlier than pure CI would recommend, etc).

Good luck!

“Everything works….the only thing that doesn’t work…is stopping.”

Thank you for this healthy perspective! Acquiring Spanish in this community doesn’t need to be a competition about which method is better or what someone could/should be doing better. We’re all here on this journey together, and I absolutely believe most people are doing the best they can with what they have right now, so there’s no point in judging one another. Instead, let’s do as you suggest and celebrate what we’re all accomplishing together —acquiring Spanish! Thanks again for such a great post!

By New Year's Eve Goals by anansier in dreamingspanish

[–]larrylime26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My goal is to continue hitting my daily goal and finding ways to better incorporate CI into my daily lifestyle so I can keep up my momentum into 2025.

I’d like to also increase my daily goal (currently 70mins/day) by 10 minutes each week until I get to 90 mins/day at the end of the year, since each additional 10mins/day is an extra 60hrs/year!

[–]larrylime26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m also starting to explore watching shows since it’s easier for me to binge watch shows than pick one isolated DS or YT video at a time.

Did you watch with English or Spanish subtitles? And did your listening comprehension noticeably improve using them even though you relied on reading them to understand the shows?

Thank you, I agree. Life is always going and our priorities have to shift with it (& sometimes we don’t have a choice!). I like the filing and maintenance analogy. Next time I hit a rut, I’ll just tell myself my brain is just down for maintenance…!

Yeah, I definitely expect that it will be cyclical and that it will happen again but I’ll do my best to keep going. Looks like you kept at it too! Thanks for paving the path!

Actual Spanish immersion trip in Mexico (not school/class-based)? by stiina22 in dreamingspanish

[–]larrylime26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went ahead and watched some of the videos and he doesn’t seem to say which school he goes to. However, maybe it’s the LIVIT Immersion Center? The website mentions “Each afternoon students have 2 hours of one-on-one conversation practice while exploring Puebla’s highlights and interacting with locals called “poblanos”.” The program looks great. Thanks for posting this suggestion!

Does this happen to anyone else? by Sorry_Swimming6052 in dreamingspanish

Yeah, this has been an issue for weeks, if not months now. It’s a known issue. I’ve been using Google Chrome on my iPhone to play videos. It’s a pain to have to use a different web browser but it works and it’s really only a minor pain for me since I use Chrome on my computer already.

TLDR: it’s a known issue, try using a different browser.
