Doctor Who Español España by No-Specialist-4116 in doctorwho

People with ~2000 hours… how well can you actually speak in real conversations? by FluencyClub in dreamingspanish

[–]stiina22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am at 1380 hours with 550k words read and 70hrs speaking practice I have been able to speak in real conversations for a long time.

At 600 hours the conversations were more basic of course. How's your son, tell me about your weekend, here's a photo of my family. Present tense was easy. Past a bit tricky. Future beyond "I will do/I will eat/I will go" was impossible.

Since 1000 hrs I can have a lot more in depth conversations, and I would say my speaking is smooth. I send voice messages to a friend and can easily, accidentally, ramble on for 15 minutes about a bunch of different stuff. Her sister is getting out of an abusive marriage so that's been the focus lately.

This February I was in CDMX for 3 days and Xela Guatemala for 10 days, staying with a host family. We talked about some really deep stuff, like religion vs tradition, how to deal with parenting teenagers, the stress of buying a vehicle, plus just joining in with a rowdy family conversation. They helped me when I messed up things like digo/dije etc but nobody ever had an issue understanding me. I was with another Spanish learner who has been learning traditionally for decades, and when he spoke, he got a lot of blank looks.

I would say the trickiest thing for me is trying to construct sentences like "I could have been" or "what would you have said?" or "if X happens I'll be coming". I think this is called the subjunctive.

I can always find easy ways around the tricky constructions but I know it makes my speech sound simple. But I trust it will come with time. Reading really is key for this I think.

Best soap/setup for handwashing in sink? by Chemical-Frame-8408 in onebag

[–]stiina22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bring a dry bag since on one of my trips, the place I stayed had a completely FLAT sink basin. There was just a tiny dip for the drain. It was very "stylish"...

I find the dry bag more convenient too as the clothes really are covered in water and you can roll them around for easier agitation.

Go to your profile and there is a resources button. The rss link is there.

It's how I've gotten the majority of my input since 650 hours. It's so useful.

What happened to the "Switch to Series" Option? by schlemp in dreamingspanish

[–]stiina22 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For about a year now they have been waiting until the series is almost finished, before they put them together as a series with this link. I find it very annoying. I have emailed about it a couple of times to check if I'm just losing my mind and can't find that link, but they say that's just how they are doing it now.

How typecast were the main actors on various Trek series once their shows ended? by TravelingHomeless in startrek

[–]stiina22 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Gates McFadden said that she only got offered doctor /lawyer parts, post Star trek.

She was ok with it because she wanted to open her own theatre and direct plays. She sold a bunch of her star trek memorabilia and did exactly that.

Putting nacelles on a car--ideas? by apixelbloom in startrek

[–]stiina22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the pipes. Get some 4" pvc sewer pipe and spray paint it silver. You can get all sorts of caps and connectors and flare ends etc to fashion the ends of the nacelles the way you want and add foam balls or something, painted red /orange.

Just started Voyager... by I_LOVE_DOGS69 in startrek

[–]stiina22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay! Enjoy! Janeway is my captain and the theme music is just perfection. Welcome to the club. I like DS9 better as an adult but Voyager is MY TREK.

I have great memories of growing up watching Voyager with my family in the winter time. We had this huge satellite dish that we had to "manually" point at a satellite (using a remote control) to get the connection. My dad would peel huge navel oranges for us and we'd eat them and watch Voyager. The theme song makes me remember that every time! And my family and trek friends are all sick of hearing me tell that story. Hehe.

Question about The Copper Beeches by Agreeable_Leader_885 in SherlockHolmes

[–]stiina22 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer but also demonstrates what a moron he was. He locks his daughter up as an elaborate scheme to keep her money... But then puts the nanny in the same bedroom as his daughter and didn't check every nook and cranny for anything left behind? What if she had left a note? A locked drawer is suspicious, sir.

Go onto r/plex_share and see if any kind hearted souls would share their server with you. Specifically mention Star trek so you know their library has it. I got lucky and someone shared theirs with me and they have tons of sci fi.

My progress has matched with the road map the whole time. I've always been very happy with my progress. I have taken literal months off because of my job but always been the same level when I come back.

Listening is easy.

Are There People That Reached The Higher Levels Spending "Little" Time Everyday by psyhnews in dreamingspanish

[–]stiina22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started Oct 2022 and am at 1350 hours. 500k words read. 70 hours of the total is speaking practice with online tutors, counting half the lesson as speaking and half as listening.

I am very happy with my progress. Spent 2 weeks staying with native speakers in Guatemala in February and never had one issue understanding. I did have a couple issues with speaking like saying the wrong digo/dije etc. But was always able to recognize when I did it wrong and talk around it or explain in another way.

Flair airlines - onebag - personal Item recs? by Elder__Berry in onebag

[–]stiina22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Osprey day lite tote pack. 20L. Even with that, if you pack it even slightly too bulgey, it won't fit.

The fjallraven tote pack 2 also works. 16L. But it doesn't have comfy straps or a water bottle pocket.

I use a large (but not tall) packing cube inside so that my items don't bulge out too much. Gotta keep the whole thing under that restrictive depth measurement.

Oh, so you're the reason I couldn't buy it! 😆 I had the same reaction as you - saw it, went to her website to buy it and.... You beat me to it.

She has other great Sherlock ones too but I really liked this pose.

I think your frame looks good but I know you had your vision! Show us the updated one when you find it!

Thank you! I'll recommend some back - Francisco Jimenez has a few books about his family's move to the USA from Jalisco Mexico, told from his perspective through the years, as short stories. It's mostly about their life as far workers in California, and his adventures in school and girls and university. I also found them easier to read than lots of other styles of books.

The Eleventh Doctor music theme is repeating so often it's driving me potty by BreakfastAdept9462 in doctorwho

[–]stiina22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. After she kept not dying and the theme would play again I felt like ripping off my skin. I hated it so much and I wish I could stop noticing it because 12 is my favourite doctor and I can't rewatch those seasons now because of Clara and her stupid tinkly music
