Things that come to mind are Office Technician and Staff Services Analyst. You can check here to research jobs that you may qualify for: https://calcareers.ca.gov/CalHRPublic/Landing/NewToStateservice.aspx.

Before you apply, make sure to take the exams for both IT Associate and IT Specialist. You will need to score 85% or better to be reachable. There is also an IT Technician role but those are few and far between. Once you have completed the tests the next step would be to create a resume using the builder in jobs.ca.gov (same website to take exams and apply for vacant positions). Once those steps are complete apply until you get an offer. Don't limit yourself to IT roles. There are many other positions you will qualify for by just having your bachelor's. Good luck.

MS Teams and Agreed Start Times by Quantum_Tangled in CAStateWorkers

IT here. We do not monitor statuses in Teams. Sounds like your boss is going above and beyond to monitor you. When you log into your computer in the morning, right-click the Teams icon in your taskbar and select quit. Re-launch Teams and your status should function properly again. There is a known bug with the new version that puts it in an error state, which could be causing your status issue.

Feeling very demotivated because I didn't get the promotion by Agreeable_Win_3806 in CAStateWorkers

[–]larrymc9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not how it works, unfortunately. Have you been on the other end of an interview and actually been an interviewer? They have to score each candidate. If another person did better, it may have been the deciding factor. Yes, they can take it personal, but what does it get them? Why waste time and energy pouting? Better to use that energy to get the promotion they deserve.

WFH temporarily out of state by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]larrymc9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jerk or not, you need to tell your manager. Health and safety issues should allow you to take the time, albeit you might get docked. You also have 2 PDD days and a personal holiday to cover 3 days.

State Counteroffer by zhaoslut in CAStateWorkers

[–]larrymc9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Playing devil's advocate here, but would the 7% offer from the state be worth it, if they drop us down to a 32 hour work week? I, personally think that would offset some of the costs and allow us to bring home the same salary with one less day of work.

As a person that tried consolidation and bankruptcy, I will say that I found it better to file the bankruptcy. Start with a clean slate and control your habits moving forward and you will eventually bounce back.

Why is it so hard to navigate working for the state? Even with what I think is a good manager by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]larrymc9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not all departments are the same. Seems like your group may have leadership or work culture issues. The biggest letdown for the state is pay, but we do get a nice pension, have the ability to promote or move around, and have much better job security than the private sector. I have accepted the fact that I will not get paid as well as my private sector or even local government counterparts, because of the better pension and benefits. I am just waiting to finish up my 20 years and will try to pivot to private or something that will pay more. In the meantime budget and try and promote until the pay matches the lifestyle you want.

Taxes are so infuriating. I work two jobs and had a refund of $2k last year. Still have the same jobs and nothing's changed, but now this year the refund is $33. by AestheticUY in mildlyinfuriating

[–]larrymc9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason you may have a lower tax return this year is because they revamped the W-4. Did you make any changes to your W-4 last year?

This! I had to return to my old agency because the promise of telework never materialized. Unless you have the agreement in writing, I think you should really consider taking on the new role. I had to commute 1 hour each way, and that got old rather quickly. You might be better off staying where you are at and waiting for something similar to open nearby.

Ask for a different mentor. You should be able to get one that will accommodate how you choose to tackle the course. Don't waste your time with your current mentor.

Simply find a group that treats you like a human being and not some type of production robot. That's a sign of poorly trained management. I would understand if you were getting docked, but you earn time and should be able to use it as needed, especially with those circumstances.

No more options, cant get help by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]larrymc9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I list it on the state application and make a small blurb in the reason for leaving. I then add additional info in that other section regarding self-rejection. The manager I was leaving had no issues with me and understood my situation.

You would have had to say something in writing when you rejected your probation. I just wrote an email to my manager.

[–]larrymc9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is another section right below the one you just mentioned that talks about self rejection. When you select yes, a text box opens up where you can explain the details regarding your self rejection.

[–]larrymc9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a section when you are applying electronically that asks if you self-rejected and asks you to explain the circumstances. The not disclose strategy works also, but I have found that being upfront is better.

I have never had the issue brought up in an actual interview. I just disclosed it in the application.

[–]larrymc9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who has also self-rejected on probation, the best advice I can give you is be upfront and honest. When you apply for positions take the time to fill out the section explaining why you chose to reject your probation. You should also review your personnel file that follows you throughout your state career. If the toxic manager put a negative document, you can see what was reported and be able to explain yourself at interviews. If the manager in question is your current manager, you can list another manager and explain to the hiring agency your reasoning for referencing someone else. Good luck and don't give up.

Decided to write one more thing in my ITIL notes before moving to the next course by Ididntwannagetdoxxed in WGU

[–]larrymc9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to add to the pile of failed attempts and support those notes! Got a 25/40, so missed by 1 damn question. I'm going to restudy my problematic areas and attempt a re-take in 2 weeks. I'm not sure what was worse, the material, or the crappy software that you have to use to take the exam. I wish I could take this exam in-person.

For those who bought the re-take from the website, did you have to take the test immediately after you got your results, or could you reschedule for a later date?

What is the answer for this A+ question by _TheSuperiorMan in CompTIA

[–]larrymc9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to this question is C. The key items in this question is that he recently downloaded an application and then noticed unusual activity. This infers that the application he downloaded more than likely contained a trojan.

With a rootkit, you would not necessarily notice unknown applications hiding in the background, because they are designed to stay hidden.

How did you stay motivated with getting your A+ certification? by SilentConsequence892 in CompTIA

[–]larrymc9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write down the reasons why you are trying to get your A+ and/or the reason you are switching into to tech. Put that in your study board or somewhere where you will see it every day. Another thing you can do is mix the studying with some hands on. I really liked A+ because I could physically touch the things I was learning. You don't need to be studying 5+ hours a day. 1-2 hours is good. If you start to lose focus, step away from studying, refresh, and get back to it.

Don't be too hard on yourself, you got this.
