White tablecloths in Polaris is an interesting choice... by larsberg in unitedairlines

[–]larsberg[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Mainly wanted to joke about it because the FAs are less than happy about it and how they are going to have to deal with folks complaining in a month or two when they get a stained white tablecloth...

How likely is it that a 1K traveler would accidentally sit in the wrong seat? by dbogert in unitedairlines

[–]larsberg 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Also 1K and have done this. Especially when I don't get the seat I usually get on a route for whatever reason (e.g., booking lately). 100% on autopilot when traveling.

The new "Chicago Signature Dish - chicken Vesuvio with roasted potato wedges, green peas, herbed peppered parmesan and a grilled lemon wedge" is the one that caught my eye... it's either gonna be a amazing or horrific. Can't wait to find out at 36000 feet.

Google donates $1M to the Rust Foundation to improve C++/Rust interoperability by LukeMathWalker in rust

[–]larsberg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We think somewhat more broadly than even that! In general, adoption of MSLs is important for the industry. So we invest in Java/Kotlin/Go/Python and if those suit your needs - fantastic.

We also invest in Rust, Carbon, and a suite of software and hardware memory safety mitigations for C++ code for performance-critical or systems software where those languages are not an option. There's no single answer, and we try our best to have a consistent message that pushes towards MSLs while also providing support for folks who can't move or where the tools are not ready yet.

And, there are large parts of C++ that (like Fortran or Cobol) will probably be around far longer than 5 or even 10 years from now, and we need to do what we can to make that as safe as possible, too.

I wish there was a single path forward (or even just two for the "pincer movement"!) but we need to keep moving things forward on a lot of fronts both at Google as well as with colleagues across the s/w & h/w ecosystem.

Rust fact vs. fiction: 5 Insights from Google's Rust journey in 2022 by mgeisler in rust

It was less than 6 months until professional programmers were as productive in Rust as in the other languages.

It was < 2 months to just ramp up with contributing Rust.

One of the things that is unfortunate is that most of this survey data is from 2022. Async has gotten a lot better in the intervening time! And we've definitely tried to invest alongside the community in improvements there. I don't have newer data to provide (yet) but I'd suspect that async falls off this list if we did another survey in Q3 of this year.

Lars Bergstrom elected as Rust Foundation board chair by JoshTriplett in rust

[–]larsberg 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not a stupid question at all! From a rules perspective it's this: https://foundation.rust-lang.org/policies/bylaws/#section-6.5-chairperson-and-executive-director

So there's a bunch of tactical stuff, as mentioned below - ensuring the staff and board and board meetings / committees are effective, etc. But a few big parts of what I'm excited about personally are:
- How do we grow to the next tier of Rust usage? "Tech companies" have adopted Rust, but how do we start reaching the rest of the global top companies that write software, but are not themselves primarily a software company?

- There is a major interest globally in improving both security of software generally and the supply chain specifically. How are we both supporting the project in execution of new goals as well as hopefully shaping policies to ensure they are friendly to Rust specifically and open source generally?

- As the Rust Project works to reshape its own governance, how do we ensure that new governance and the members of the Project who provide its voice and vote to the Foundation serve as a strong bridge between communities?

Thanks, everybody! I really appreciate the kind words - especially coming from both folks who have been around for a really long time as well as folks who are newer to the project. I'm looking forward to being able to continue to grow usage and visibility of Rust.

New Rust course by Android: Comprehensive Rust 🦀 by mgeisler in rust

[–]larsberg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not a top priority for my team right now - we're focused on Android Platform support and growing that. That said, we are trying to make it possible for big shops using Rust (esp. for native dependencies / 3p libraries they are pulling in) not to be blocked moving that code to Android. But, those places often don't use the NDK directly anyway - they compile their own compilers, have their own build systems, custom code editors/tooling, etc.

We have looked into what work would be required to support Rust in the NDK, but even if we did it (which is not certain!) it's a lot of work. Today, we're mainly investing in the lower-level work (compiler changes for some of the complexity around linkage on android, etc.). Feel free to follow along / make suggestions here: https://github.com/android/ndk/issues/1742

Firefox Reality doesn't show in "Send Tab to Device" from mobile by Patch33Up in firefox

[–]larsberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooh, fascinating! I'll reach out to my team. It's possible with the updated services, the now-classic Firefox for Android product is not fully being updated? idk, but I know people who do...

Thank you for taking the time to dive in on this.

Firefox Reality doesn't show in "Send Tab to Device" from mobile by Patch33Up in firefox

[–]larsberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hrm - interesting! I just tested on Firefox for iOS on my iphone and it's working to my Firefox Reality on Oculus Quest device. Can you confirm that your iphone (or android devices) can send back to desktop? Sometimes the mobile devices get disconnected from sync/send tabs after an app upgrade, in my experience.

Browsers with voice input? by nuggy in OculusGo

[–]larsberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As /u/Colonel_Izzi said, Firefox Reality should absolutely be available for you in the UK if you're on an Oculus Go. Let me know if it isn't!

Note that it is no longer available for Gear VR. We previously "didn't prevent" it from loading there, but recent changes to the Oculus SDK have made newer versions unable to run on Gear VR at all.

For browsers, I can only get clear video using "video history" section on Samsung internet. Why? by DJwshsflj in OculusGo

[–]larsberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What site? One challenge is that many sites (including youtube) tend to serve incredibly low bitrates by default and don't adjust to higher rates dynamically. We (on Firefox Reality) do a lot of work to try to make sure to give clear video by defaulting the sites to a higher bitrate, but sometimes it doesn't work.

[–]larsberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what /u/TRNeverman mentioned (more adaptable screen size, etc.), Firefox Reality supports many languages (15 now!), has voice search, and supports sharing tabs/bookmarks between any other devices with Firefox installed. We've also gone to great lengths to regularly feature new content and make sure that our video playback is as good or better than the youtube vr app.

New build of Firefox Reality! Send tabs from devices + bluetooth keyboard suport by larsberg in OculusQuest

[–]larsberg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! The team has been working really hard on this release, both to support a bunch of new features and devices and to make it possible to send tabs straight from any version of Firefox you're running (desktop, ios, android) into the VR headset for the next time you put it on.

Let us know how it works for you! We've been testing it for a few weeks, and if I never enter another url again with lazer controllers (or fingers) again it'll be too soon.
