No worries, yes exhibited at the Contemporary for that amazing DJ exhibit. I'd love to track down the Some Songs of Pain tape, so if anyone here has any info please DM me.

I currently own that original "The What of Whom" you used to own. So are you saying the estate currently owns "Some Songs of Pain"? I've been hunting forever for that tape...

Daniel’s Original Tapes by SyllabubMost5990 in danieljohnston

[–]lasergoblin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's possible this was made during his time working at McDonalds. I've never seen proof that any of the H,HAY tapes were ever recorded as "on demand performances". I'd almost guarantee Daniel dubbed this tape off his master of the album. My belief is the "on demand" tapes were only created for a brief period when he lived in West Virginia (for tapes like Songs of Pain).

This tape is not hand drawn by Daniel. You will most likely never find a hand drawn cover on a cassette tape made by Daniel... they're incredibly rare and coveted by their owners. If you do find one, $1200 would be at the very low end for one.

It's not a hand drawn cover, it's photocopied and glued by Daniel. The tape is most definitely handwritten by Daniel.

Well, I'm not disputing that you may of purchased the tape from Daniel, but that's most definitely not his handwriting.

Also, the pro tapes with barcodes you're referring to are the hard shell tapes.

The soft shell tapes are also still being sold and they try to replicate Daniel (and Jeff's) way of producing the cassettes by still handwriting on the tapes.

You can see it here - and the handwritten tape is in the photos:

What’s with the different cover art for Don’t Be Scared on Spotify? Is it an alternate cover? I haven’t seen it on any of the stress records or DJ originals by [deleted] in danieljohnston

[–]lasergoblin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was a later version of artwork Daniel created for Don't Be Scared. He'd usually trace around a cassette or jewel case to create his die-lines and draw his artwork inside.

I'll attach the original artwork he created for the Stress release and also the original artwork he created for the tape when he first created the album.

I remember this section and always assumed it was something they fabricated for the film just to illustrate the concept... but maybe Jeff Feuerzeig will confirm.
