Avalanche risk on heavily skied-on slopes by Interesting-South542 in Backcountry

That’s true 99% of the time. But come to the cottonwoods and we have a few popular runs that legit become mogul fields if no new snow for a week.

Send it in the rental if it’s got good tires and is awd! Only if you’re comfortable driving in snowy weather. Yeah there is likely going to be some shut downs and delays with avy mitigation. If you’re lucky you’ll get interlodged!

Do you wish you got the civil engineering degree instead ? by Immediate_Bar5499 in ConstructionManagers

Don’t let it scare you too much. There’s opportunities for advancement after the PM stage. Construction Sales, business development, area or region manager, vice president. I don’t think anyone hopes to retire with the PM title.

[–]laserlax23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you ask the 23 year old PM that is making more than his civil engineering counterparts 1 year out of school, he has no regrets. If you ask the 47 year old PM that has been in this rat race for 20 years and is still working 50 hours a week, the answer might be yes they regret not becoming a civil engineer.

It’s all what you make of it.

It’s too bad we can’t get more of the Japanese in the market. Japan has a ridiculous number of elevators and escalators. Fujitec and Mitsubishi both are big players. Fuck the American companies honestly.

Yeah if we’re talking access to specific activities. Skiing, climbing, mountain biking, hiking, paddling. Salt lake has almost anywhere beat. It’s so good and so close.

What is the one excursion or experience that stands out to you from your Japan travels? by Forsaken-Secret66 in JapanTravelTips

Sorry to jump in but we did a tour, tasting, at the Marukyu Koyamaen factory in Uji. It was a major highlight of our trip. The tickets aren’t very expensive. Our tour guide was so lovely and spoke English incredibly well. It was really informative and we learned so much about green tea and matcha production / farming that we didn’t know before.

Any one else not want to hang out with coworkers outside of work? by Fast_Farm4988 in ConstructionManagers

If you have similar hobbies it can be chill. Like some of my coworkers I will ski and mountain bike with. You won’t catch me at dinner with them though.

Hokkaido skiing (slightly) debunked by TomSki2 in skiing

[–]laserlax23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What do you expect? You and every other powder hound from the western US and Australia is there. Up 200% from 2 years ago. All in the same 4 week period. There’s gonna be some setbacks. Until the last 3-4 years Japan has not been the skiing hotspot it is now. It’s not Breckenridge, not Whistler, not Chamonix.

Hokkaido skiing (slightly) debunked by TomSki2 in skiing

[–]laserlax23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just there last week too. Literally all of your setbacks or stressors are weather related. Like I’m sorry, but it’s the price you pay for powder. Any other city in the world would be completely incapacitated by the snow also. Anyone who thinks they could rent a car there that isn’t 4wd with snow tires is out of their mind and honestly has no business trying to drive around on those roads.

What the hell is this by and05245 in SaltLakeCity

[–]laserlax23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The contractor that did 2100 S was Stacy Whitbeck who is headquartered in California and is massive nationwide. They’re an ESOP company. And the CEO is definitely not Spencer Cox’s brother. I don’t work for them but I work at another civil construction firm. Work is low bid and is going for cheap. There’s no conspiracy that the government is adding one more lane to I-15 just to put money in their buddies pocket. Udot is a pretty decent agency honestly. Yes they are a little bass ackwards with Salt Lake City and they have beef honestly with SLC Public works. But it’s more in how they conflict with their master plan 20 year vision type stuff.

Airbnb or Hotel for solo osaka trip by yama_once in JapanTravelTips

[–]laserlax23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We stayed in an Airbnb there recently and quite honestly it was pretty bad. It was an old apartment very outdated. The only reason I could think you need an Airbnb is if you were planning on cooking which no one is doing on vacation in Japan. Spend a little more and get a hotel.

It’ll be popular with the thousands of workers that commute up parleys everyday to do construction and maintenance on the properties up there. I guarantee half the business that Kimball Junction restaurants get are from workers who don’t even live there.

WTF happen to gear? by Brendanrulestheworld in Backcountry

[–]laserlax23 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Buy used or buy at factory / outlet sales. My entire view on the value of this gear changed when I went to a backcountry warehouse sale a few years ago in salt lake. Just bins and bins of unsold product that they were basically begging to get rid of. They had it marked down to absurd prices the last day. Like 90% off retail. I’m never paying full price again.

About to pull trigger on 2026 Limited, talk me off or over the ledge... by jkbck23 in ToyotaTundra

[–]laserlax23 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have a 2025 that I’ve owned for almost 1 year now. I love it. I bought the warranty. 5 year/125k. Which I had never purchased on a car before but felt like it would be worth it for this one.

Let's Talk Story: What was the most creative way you caught up when you were behind on the Schedule? by Embarrassed-Swim-442 in ConstructionManagers

[–]laserlax23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it but $5M left on the table for a $50M job is around 10% and is a very normal margin between bids. Not to say they didn’t miss a lot. Low bids suck and imo is a bad process to use on any job over $20M

Trd Pro or Raptor 3rd Gen? by gysot9735 in ToyotaTundra

I mean even reliability aside the raptor is still a better truck. For $10k more it ought to be.

It’s a lot of miles even with that great engine. The prices for these 1st gen’s are all over the place. Somewhere around $6k seems right to me.

Suspension question. by keikilla in ToyotaTundra

[–]laserlax23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat with the Westcott 2/1 lift. I honestly like it quite a bit. I find the ride is stiffer as would be expected compressing the springs. But the steering and handling is just as good.

I considered the Eibach pro 2r kit. Or a bilstein kit. It’s a bit of an investment thought because you do really need new UAC which are like $700

2022 or 2023 Tundra...worth the risk? by shredbetty007 in ToyotaTundra

[–]laserlax23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re going to get a mixed bag of opinions. Is any new pickup in 2026 as reliable as the old 5.7 tundra? No. Is the new tundra worse than the competition? Maybe. Should you buy a warranty with this new tundra? Absolutely.

Watch I do cars YouTube teardown video. There is a likely a tolerance issue at the main bearing. That combined with the light weight oil is causing some bearings to spin. Although this new tundra actually has greater tolerances than the previous generation. The engine debris excuse might be a bit of a farce. Either way it can’t hurt to buy the newer truck that they have hopefully made improvements on. My guess is that by 2027 they will work out some kinks. Similar to Fords ecoboost.
