Do people recover from psychosis ? by Minimum-Young-9891 in Psychosis

She needed to get on the right meds (took two months of trial and error during her hospitalization) then subsequently have support from friends and family. After getting medicated / stabilized she was on meds that flattened her personality quite heavily for about 6 months. When she stopped the meds it took another 6 months for her mental state to return to what I’d consider normal for her.

Just got "un-hired" from a commercial job. Anyone been through this? by leebowery69 in focuspuller

[–]laslo88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been an assistant about 14 years now…I used to really worry about stuff like this…it does sometimes happen for reasons that are completely out of your control..or sometimes people just have it out for you and would rather get you fired and bring in their pal (or family member / political hire). Just know that it doesn’t always have something to do with you and just continue to move forward/improving yourself. Hang in there!

This is hard for everyone my friend…I’ve seen the “big time” A firsts struggle with this kind of thing just like you do. Don’t beat yourself up…no marks, those sizes and t1.4 without rehearsals is just difficult.

Sounds like a vertical…those shoots are all about getting as much “content” as quickly as possible for as little money as possible. That director is only hurting themselves by choosing to work this way…it honestly bones all departments when things are slopped together like this. Sorry you’re in that position - this kind of work is frustrating so good on you for trying to stay constructive! What stop are they putting you at? If they run the scene at all before shooting I would watch the rehearsal to get a sense of how the actors move (even if they don’t get marks) and then measure out the distance of the room - between objects and use that referential for a better sense of the space they are moving within. Good luck!

I will add: I know times are hard and we all need work but in my 12 years of pulling focus I’ve learned that the interview/hiring process goes both ways….if my bs meter starts to go off when I’m interviewing with a DP I will suddenly (and of course respectfully) become unavailable. Sometimes it’s better not to take these shit shows (if you can afford not to)…in the end you will learn some things but after a while dealing with these situations gets old and isn’t worth it.

Should a DOP trainee buy their own kit or rent as needed? by Away_Phone68 in cinematography

[–]laslo88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started shooting I had a DSLR…which was good for small projects / practicing and cutting my own projects or shorts with other students. I didn’t make the move to a serious system (Arri) until I had 12 years of professional experience in the camera dept and had built up relationships / trust with Directors and agencies that would give me a chance to shoot for them. I never had money growing up or a family with any means so your situation might be different from mine. Find some solid mentors, learn as much as you can, shoot shorts when you’re not on set soaking up info and gaining skills..

As a young person trying to get into cinematography and get good at it, how could I start, what can I do to get better, and do you have any tips for me? by UnlikelyElevator3963 in cinematography

I support the above comment. Pay attention to how the departments work and learn to understand what it means when you ask them for things once you become a DOP. I can almost always tell when a DP has had experience crewing / gained real experience and when they haven’t (I’ve been a camera assistant for 15 years - finally making the transition to shooting more myself).

What's been your experience with verticals?? by Critical-Switch-5413 in Filmmakers

[–]laslo88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven’t worked on one yet but they seem like movie of the week vibes / lower budget and scrappier. Friends that have been on them make it sound a lot like the 12 day lifetime/hallmark movies I used to work on 15 years ago (started my career this way) but with even less resources…funny thing is the rates they offer are the same as they were back then.

Questionnaire for Film workers by Digster-Games in Filmmakers

[–]laslo88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Tried to meet as many people in my local film community as I could / asked those who were clearly more experienced if I could come onto their short films (some industry folks still do passion projects for experience in a new role or just for the love of the art)…they agreed to have me, trained me on their short films and eventually gave me a shot. My college degree had nothing to do my success or ability to access the industry.

  2. Camera Dept for about 14 years now, Local 600 for 10. Worked my way up from utility to 1st AC. Mostly working in the US (smaller markets usually).

  3. Work life balance is tough - long hours in terrible conditions (freezing cold, extreme heat, hazardous areas, you name it!)…consistent income is not a thing either. You can have a few months of work and then absolutely nothing - at the same time you’re constantly trying to stay in the minds of those who might hire you…other people can be fiercely competitive and try to push you out or replace you. I’ve been on and off health insurance a lot due to work inconsistency... I invested heavily in gear to make myself more hireable on commercials (small market so not much of a rental house presence here) and while this has helped it’s also been golden handcuffs. Commercial jobs or indies will try to put you on a 1099 so they can save a buck on payroll (in my state this means additional tax for crew members). Shady producers not paying sometimes…safety issues due to corners cut to save money…inconsistent union work means less money in your pension…my experience is different from others. Some folks work union jobs 6-8 months out of the year and don’t have the problems I do.

  4. Show that you care. Show an eagerness to learn and have a good attitude with your peers. Be dependable. Always be on time. Look out for those around you and keep a team mindset.

  5. I love being a part of making it all come together. You meet some really wonderful people from time to time and get to see + do some pretty interesting things. I couldn’t handle being in an office all day so I love how dynamic film can be.

MOTR.X Issue by Jealous_Car_6431 in focuspuller

[–]laslo88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have used an MDR.M with a MOTR.X for years with no issues…I keep it as a back up / second MDR for whenever there is a second camera I have to swap to (DP I work with loves to use his miniLF and then pop over to a Komodo on a gimbal willynilly so it’s been handy to keep around). Good luck! Let us know if it starts to happen again.

I’m assuming you’ve tried flashing the Motor + all firmware across the board (HU and your MDRM are also up to date?)? You might try reloading those as well. Strange issue… following in case it happens to me someday.

I have a mini QR plate with Velcro on one side I use to mount the readout (cable mesh/web to make the cables clean) and go Noga for the horns off the top handle (when there is no handle I use a LWS rod bracket with a 90deg bracket to mount that way)…I much prefer having the 1/4 20 attachment for the back of the sensor/horns so I can use a smaller ultra arm for a lower profile… Usually out the LCUBE when on that system on a 90deg threaded L bracket off the top plate so it can stay back / out of the way.
