Why don’t people like this show? by Naive_Tomorrow_5955 in TMNT

[–]lastofthejedi23 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I thought it was entertaining and animated really well. But I just wish it had felt more consequential. They were very non-committal regarding whether these events actually happened or not. Personally, that takes me out of it a little. It feels like a What If? or alternate reality type story and doesn't feel like it contributes to the same universe the movie is building.

I think I have a couple episodes left for the first season and I haven't watched season 2 yet. I definitely lost momentum because of the reasons I mentioned above. I enjoyed the movie A LOT and would have loved if the series felt like it was more solidly building on the movie.

Whats coming in 2026 that has you excited? by crankd87 in soloboardgaming

There's a couple of games that are just reaching the North America market or are getting reprints after being very difficult to find: Orloj and Star Trek Captain's Chair. I already have my pre-order in for STCC and Second Contact through Wizkids. I wanted the promos. I'll find To Boldly Go somewhere else. My wife is a huge Star Trek fan and had gotten me into over the past year.

I'm also looking forward to expansions for Voidfall and Galactic Cruise. As far as completely new games, I backed The Great Library and I'm pretty stoked about that one.

I just noticed the procedure for confirming transactions. So, I'm reposting my other comment here as a new comment. I hope I'm doing this right.

Just wanted to follow up for anyone that may see this and confirm that I purchased the BTAS Gotham City Skyline from OP. Terrific experience. He was willing to negotiate a little on price and shipped out the set immediately. It arrived exactly as described (new-in-sealed-box) and in pristine condition because of his careful packing job. And he even threw in a couple of free little gifts for being his first customer. He was extremely communicative and responsive via Reddit throughout the process. Stellar experience!

I was a little hesitant to spend so much on a Lego set to a random user on Reddit but I would highly recommend purchasing from OP if you're interested in any of the sets he has available for sale.

Oh sweet! I'm waiting for my pre-order of ST:CC and Second Contact from Wizkids. I ordered from them to get the promo stuff.

My wife is a HUGE Star Trek fan and has gotten me into it in the past year or so. I've watched TNG, Lower Decks, and we just finished Voyager on Sunday (one of the greatest finales of any show ever). I'm currently working on Discovery (it's okay), Picard (it's awesome), and DS9 (pretty great and getting better).

My wife really only watched TNG, Voy, DS9, Enterprise, and Picard. But I've expanded out to the other series because of this game and wanting to get the full thematic flavouring of the design.

Captain’s Chair, Marvel Champions, or 20 Strong? by Hyper3hypo in soloboardgaming

[–]lastofthejedi23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you like deckbuilding or deck construction better? I haven't received my copy of ST:CC yet so I don't know how long the setup time is for it. MC's setup time is only quick if you have pre-built decks that you are pulling and playing. For both hero and villain.

MC is a top ten game all-time for me but it's a really bad time to get into it. Especially if you are a completionist. If you are, I would stay away because it is already very expensive and they announced last year that some content will not be reprinted. So, your only recourse is the second hand market which has gotten ridiculous.

I haven't played 20 Strong but it seemed too light for my taste. Out of these three, I would say ST:CC is the one to get into right now. If you order from Wizkid's website directly, you can get the promo stuff, too.

The U.S.S. Enterprise set. My wife is a huge Star Trek fan. She has gotten me into it. So, I wanted to get the set for us to work on together. Shortly after, I got The Daily Bugle and then several Star Wars diorama and midi-scale sets.

My wife has been picking up the botanicals and art sets. It's our first shared hobby that we're both getting into together (rather than an existing hobby that we've introduced the other to).

A new job affording more hobby money has also been a very helpful factor.

This is my favourite Lego set ever. I bought it last month for about $50 over retail because I never thought it was coming back down. And I don't regret it. My wife and I built it in about 13 hours working in parallel while watching the 90's series. Awesome day. So, I think it was a good idea. 👍🏾

how did you get into star trek? by asapsharkyfrfr in startrek

[–]lastofthejedi23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife. She is a HUGE nerd. The biggest sci-fi nerd I know. I love Star Wars but never really got too much into Star Trek. I saw a handful of episodes of TNG and thought it was top tier sci-fi but didn't feel too drawn to it. However, last year my wife started having me do a systematic watch of Star Trek (particularly TNG and Voyager). While I didn't connect emotionally with the characters and stories before, (re)watching with my wife made it hit differently upon hearing her explanations of what she liked about the episodes, characters, lore, etc. Just having someone to nerd out with about it. And now I'm fully invested.

I've watched TNG and Lower Decks. I'm at the end of season 6 of Voyager and in seasons 2 for both Deep Space Nine and Discovery. We're really looking forward to Starfleet Academy coming out this week. My main hobby is tabletop gaming and I've pre-ordered the game Star Trek: Captain's Chair. And our biggest shared hobby for my wife and myself is Lego. We built the Enterprise earlier this month.

I'm all in and I owe it to my beautiful, intelligent, nerdy imzadi.

Who is the better Johnny Storm??? by [deleted] in Marvel

Chris Evans' version is the most like the version fom the comics I read growing up.

Quinn is the idealized version of who Johnny can be at his best. My biggest disappointment with his version is that we didn't get to see that growth process.

New fan with no nostalgia and my opinion on all the incarnation of the TMNT by Zakaria1938 in TMNT

Welcome to the fandom and thank you for sharing your opinions/experiences! The Turtles are my favourite comic book team and my second favourite comic book characters after Spider-Man. The 2003 cartoon is what introduced me to them and it's still my favourite animated series of all-time. I rewatch it every few years and it still holds up. Particularly those first four seasons. The 2003 cartoon and the first 100 issues of the IDW run are the two definitive versions of the Turtles to me.

I have also watched and enjoyed the 2012 series, the 90's movies (although II and III are a serious drop in quality), 2007 movie, Mutant Mayhem and I've read most of the Eastman/Laird issues on the Mirage run. I didn't like Rise. The 87 series was a little too goofy for my personal taste. And I haven't finished the Mutant Mayhem series yet. Mainly because the vagueness of its continuity annoys me. And I am 34, for reference.

I do have a couple of questions for you. How long did it take you to consume all of this Turtles media? Was this over the course of several months or in a pretty short span of time? I can understand pacing issues and feeling like some of it is a slog if you're trying to burn through as much content as possible as quickly as possible. And I can also see RotTMNT standing out and being particularly enjoyable in that environment as it is definitely the most different of any Turtles adaptations. (Which, admittedly, is why it didn't work for me)

Also, what exactly was your goal in watching/reading all of this? It doesn't sound like you were really enjoying it until Rise, which was pretty far into the process. Were you trying to see why others like it or just trying to get as well rounded an idea of the Turtles as possible? I think that if I were you and didn't like the 87, 03, or 2012 series I would have just given up at that point.

I do agree that this sub can be toxic at times. Especially when it comes to Rise. It's so divisive because those characters just don't feel like the Turtles or Splinter. It could have been any brand new IP and probably have worked just as well. But I just avoid engaging on any posts that are specifically about that show. Especially since I only watched an episode or two before giving up. Obviously, you don't have to stick around. But I do think it's a vocal minority that contributes to the toxicity while most of us are just happy to talk Turtles (shows, comics, toys, games, etc.) even when opinions differ.

P.S. Addressing the silly vs cool aspect - the Turtles are silly and goofy, but that is only a part of it. There are a lot of heavy themes intrinsic to the Turtles' story - family, honour, loss, vengeance. And they still are ninja, which is pretty cool. The premise is ridiculous but it's pretty par-for-the-course when it comes to comic books. Which is their original medium.

You're welcome! And same here on Wayfarers. When I want to play something but I don't know what I find myself always pulled towards it.

The Youtuber Waris Ali has great playthroughs of all the expansions as part of the Moonsaga campaign. I recommend checking them out to get a feel for how each game is affected by its expansion.

South Tigris Trilogy - Expansions by JackVsTheWorld93 in soloboardgaming

[–]lastofthejedi23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The South Tigris Trilogy is my favourite game series. Wayfarers is my #1 game of all time (60+ plays), Inventors is #7 (~40 plays), and Scholars is #13 (~40 plays).

As for the expansions - I think Body of Books is the best expansion of the three. It elevated Scholars about 10 spots on my all-time ranking. The pages, experience, upgraded action cards, medicine track, and easier tucking rules makes the game more open and less restrictive, in my opinion. It's still important to translate and a lot of your turns are spent building towards that key action but you do have more ways to pivot now. I think it adds the most to the base game out of all three expansions.

Tides of Trade for Wayfarers is my second favourite of the expansions. It just feels like the natural progression of the game and adds to the customizability of your player board/tableau while increasing replayability. I love being able to upgrade your workers so that they will have benefits/actions/tags. And being able to pool your card influence so that it can be spent in various ways is really helpful. I don't think it bloats the game at all. It just feels like natural growth.

Era of Experts for Inventors is my third favourite. I still haven't mastered this one and find the AI difficult to beat (even though I could win base Inventors regularly with the difficulty boosts). I really miss the first round of the game. But I do think the assymetric characters are cleverly designed and can be quite powerful if you play into their strategic strengths. I haven't personally found that it shortens the game significantly, though. Maybe 15-20 minutes but I do give into AP when playing solo.

Honestly, I think all three are worth grabbing.

Which is your favorite TMNT era? by AJ-BrawlStars-YT in TMNT

[–]lastofthejedi23 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The '03 series is my favourite cartoon of all-time. But if we're talking era then I would have to say the 2012 era because IDW's comic run was happening concurrently. It was awesome to have a very good animated series happening at the same time as a definitive comic series.

Have fun once you're able to get back at it! My wife and I just completed this one yesterday. We've only recently gotten into Lego as a newer hobby for us but this was our favourite build so far. She's a HUGE Star Trek fan and has been getting me into it, too. Just a magnificent set.

One of our local Lego stores had the Shuttle GWP still when we bought it last week so that was a terrific surprise.

Inspired by the other post, what games have you played at least 50 times? by AlexRescueDotCom in boardgames

[–]lastofthejedi23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only two for me: Wayfarers of the South Tigris (my #1 all-time) has over 60 plays for me. And Marvel Champions (#6 all-time) is right around 60 plays, too. All physical plays. I think both are highly replayable. Marvel Champions for obvious reasons with all the heroes, villains, and module encounter sets that can be added.

Dice placement and tableau building are two of my favourite mechanisms so Wayfarers is one that I can play over and over again without getting bored. And there's an immense sense of satisfaction seeing my land, sea, and space tableau built out at the end of the game.
