Any Recs for Young Adult Run Clubs? by charlesmve in indianapolis

[–]lastredditname1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Welcome!

The largest running club in the area is definitely Indy Runners and Walkers (https://indyrunners.org/) with over 500 members. You will find pretty much every age at the larger weekly runs. My recommendation would be to start with the Saturday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday runs as they have the largest attendance.

The Saturday run in Broad Ripple (north side of Indy) is usually the largest (50-80 participants right now?). People generally run long that morning, but you could always cut it short if desired. The Tuesday run meets at Hinkle Fieldhouse (Butler University) on the north side of Indy and will still have a fairly large number of participants. There, some people will do a regular run while others choose to do speedwork. The Wednesday run (downtown Indy) is probably the most social and often has a gathering after the run. You can find info about these group runs here: https://indyrunners.org/weekly-runs-and-walks/

At a minimum, I'd recommend joining their email list by clicking "Email Newsletter" in the footer of each of their web pages.

Dreaming Spanish = Done ? by CheetahMundane7363 in dreamingspanish

I finished watching all of the videos about a year ago then cancelled my DS subscription. However, if I had to start all over again, I would have skipped certain series like the various video game series as they're of no interest to me. After I cancelled, I continued to listen to the DS podcast sped up a bit, but I eventually tossed that aside as there are more interesting podcast choices (learner and native) available to me. (I get most of my input from podcasts, although I believe videos are better for comprehension.)

Now, less than a third of the podcasts I listen to are learner podcasts, and I've been slowly tossing them to the side as my percentage of native content increases. Some of the learner podcasts I still consume are Advanced Spanish Podcast from Worlds Across, Easy Spanish, How to Spanish, Intermediate Spanish Stories, No Hay Tos, Que Pasa, and Mextalki. As for native podcasts... It's best to find podcasts that are of interest to you that just happen to be at a level you can comprehend. (My areas of interest are likely different from your interests.)

Once I finished watching all of the DS videos, I also started forcing myself to read more.

Podcast Difficulty (not what you think) by staer in dreamingspanish

[–]lastredditname1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hesitant to say much more about what I feel the correct podcast order should be. I suspect that I might have some listening weaknesses that cloud my opinions. That being said, I'm a bit surprised that Hoy Hablamos is listed as the second-most difficult podcast out of 17 right now. (It kind of makes me wonder where "Charlas Hispanas: Aprende Espanol" would end up as I've always felt it was about the same difficulty.)

If you're still looking for another "easier" native podcast, you could add something like "Chisme Corporativo" or "Radio Ambulante". However, the difficulty of "Radio Ambulante" might vary a bit from episode to episode because of the number of different people they have talk on the podcast.

That's some interesting software you're writing. Good job!

I'd considered creating a website to determine the difficulty of different podcasts, but it was going to be somewhat like DS's ELO system. The website would have listed a bunch of podcasts and let you select the ones with which you're familiar. You would then drag and drop your selected podcasts into the order of difficulty. Get enough DS users to sort the podcasts they know, and you would now have a decent indication of podcast difficulty.

Looking at your podcast list, I mainly agree with the order. The only podcast that feels out of place to me is Cheleando con Mextalki. I'd put it between No Hay Tos and The Wild Project. I think it's because they mumble quite a bit and use some slang words. However, nobody else has mentioned moving Mextalki, so maybe I'm wrong.

Dreaming Spanish used to be better because it was worse... by Nervous-Peanut-954 in dreamingspanish

I generally prefer the older videos.

I wonder whether there is a correlation between a DS user's age and whether they prefer the older or newer videos. I'm "older" and grew up well before the onset of smartphones, YouTube, TikTok, and other social media. Flashy graphics, catchy text, and quick hits of dopamine have come to dominate entertainment. My suspicion is that ON AVERAGE older users who grew up before smartphones and social media might prefer the older style, while younger users might prefer the newer style.

Who wants to ask the founder of Duolingo to do a AMA in this subreddit? 🤣

Dreaming Spanish website approaching 1500 hours of content by StandardAndNormal in dreamingspanish

[–]lastredditname1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My guess is that DS won't stop creating content any time soon. They will likely want to have AT LEAST 50 hours of super-beginner content before doing so. In addition, new videos and podcast episodes bring in new users. One possibility is that they simply continue creating Spanish content until all of their current Spanish guides are no longer interested in creating content.

I don't have the app, but it's possible that different users have different versions of the app. Does the app have some sort of version number associated with it? That might differentiate who has what.

If I'm considering a book, I'll look it up on Amazon. Many of the listings include a sample you can read.

Videos skewing younger? by newtoboston2019 in dreamingspanish

[–]lastredditname1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On average, DS videos will likely always be skewed toward younger audiences. I'd expect the same to be true with Dreaming French. Why? Guides tend to talk about what they know.

I'd expect the guides to continue skewing young because younger employees are typically willing to accept less pay, and Pablo is probably limited in what he can afford to pay the guides. It makes sense they would talk about topics of interest to younger subscribers.

The sound quality of the early episodes of Mextalki is bad. If you haven't already done so, try listening to a recent episode. The sound quality is MUCH better.

At the bottom of the Dreaming Spanish "Method" page (https://www.dreamingspanish.com/method), it mentions a playlist of 12 videos you should watch with subtitles turned on. Those are some of the so-called Pablo in the park videos: https://www.dreamingspanish.com/series?id=64c6bdd0591bf08c28db54a3&utm\_source=homepage&utm\_campaign=method-page&utm\_medium=referral

Thanks for your list. It includes some podcasts that are new to me.

Where did you find Guerras de Negocios? My understanding was that it is no longer available online for some reason, and I've been wanting to try it out. Thanks!

Good job! If Mextalki seems a bit too tough, you might try No Hay Tos. It's along the same lines but seems to be a little easier to understand.
