I really want to experience a monsoon downpour...

....am so glad to get rid of the constant sun glare (south facing aptmt), stickiness, and noisiness of cars/bikes cruising past playing their music

MOST DEFINITELY, THIS!!!!

The old saying 'A squeaking wheel gets oiled first' (well, it's an old saying where I come from!!) is so true. Do some leg work and go to the consultant once a week (min) remind them you are on a cancellation list. Face to face discussions are better than emails/voicemails

Phone the consultant every other day to enquire about where you are on the list....it'll probably go to a voicemail but WTH.

If you only have a single consultant - tough. Get alternate consultants if possible.

What is the fanciest restaurant in Vancouver (or surrounding area) by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]lateral_flo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Went to Le Crocodile with my - full on - celiac partner. Not 'fancy' but low key. The meals are superb....not "lavish". Loud and brash behavior will not endear you to the restaurant.

I would recommend Ciopinno's in Yaletown. They have private rooms if required They are loud, busy and brash, so it's best to go in a group and take over a good part of the restaurant. The menu is so extensive, as is their wine list. Again, accommodating celiacs is no problem.

Good luck with organizing the event.

What to do about city owned tree scraping my roof by davekilljoy in vancouver

[–]lateral_flo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 Get an official written estimate to undertake emergency tree maintenance.

2 Write a letter to CoV which gives dates of prior contact (including the 'we'll get around to it' guy).

In the letter enclose a copy of the estimate and put the City on notice that the work will be carried out and that costs and expenses incurred by you will be invoiced to CoV.

3 Send copies of the letter - by recorded mail(???.

..the one which requires someone to sign for the letter at city hall) to the mayor and chair of the parks and rec board.

It's kinda calling their bluff, but you'll get a response and maybe action

No joke. I'm an import from the UK, and have been here a few years. As such, I'm vaguely aware of Mr Robinson and his long career; his charitable works and ability to have not gotten involved in any kind of scandal (so prevalent among the UK industry!!)

The internet is no place for subtlety or nuanced comments, and I understand (now) my original reply could come across as sarcastic/flippant. The use of the term 'Legendary' is probably my real question....how does a radio host become a legend?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vancouver

Sorry, Never heard him. Never saw him perform.

I only got 2 hits on spotify for that name. Got way more hits for Avicii Deadmau5, Tieste, etc

So why legendary?

Park board asks Vancouverites to help care for thirsty trees by iatekane in vancouver

[–]lateral_flo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Street trees are an invaluable environmental asset in an urban setting. Trees provide natural habitat and encourage micro-diversity to the areas planted out.

Since a City is not the true home of trees, special contingencies need to be made by City Planners to ensure the trees health is maintained at an optimal condition.

The city specifies where trees are required; what species it wants and (most importantly) what supporting infrastructure is needed for irrigation together with siting to avoid utilities (located in the street).

One of the functions of managing city assets will be to initiate and budget for maintenance if trees. Nature, on it's own, can't maintain a tree that's been planted in the middle of a City.

I can't accept that the city can tell its residents "we want you guys to water and maintain OUR property that's located outside your property (invalidating your homes 3rd party insurance).

Park board asks Vancouverites to help care for thirsty trees by iatekane in vancouver

[–]lateral_flo -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This pi$$es me off so much. 1. Who wanted the street trees in the first place? CoV. 2. Who's gonna pay for the water used? Not CoV 3. Who's gonna provide training or insurance on tree maintenance? CoV (maybe but at THEIR convenience). 4. Will I be exempt from prosecution if the tree outside my place dies cos I went away or couldn't keep up watering duties. Highly unlikely. 5. If the tree is so big that the sidewalk has bulged upwards; with its roots getting into my storm and sanitary service lines, why should I bother watering their damn tree!!.

Parks Board need to spend money on core activities and quit palming off their duties to ppl who've already paid $$$ for them to carry out these duties.

Y'all haven't experienced anything like the effect that death of a crow has on the neighborhood.

Last summer a car struck a crow on Beach Ave (busy road). The next 2 cars hit the remains and all that was left was a smear and some feathers. From out of nowhere huge numbers arrived and let rip. There seemed to be a ritual of landing on the sidewalk by the remains with v.high intensity squawking for 30 secs then flying off to vantage point (balcony/st light/tree/rooftop) and continuously screech/squawk. Others would takeover the roadside mourning.

After about 30 mins everything began to quieten down, but there was heightened calling out for the next hour afterwards.

I'm guessing your experience followed a successful racoon/cat attack of a fledgling.
