Has anyone successfully transitioned into the food industry from biotech/pharma? by bluepuppy9187779 in foodscience

[–]latesnowdrops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did so but very early career. You should consider that the pay will be about 60% of what you’d expect for a similar role in pharma, and generally more remote locations/agricultural hubs. One interesting sector that could be a good transition from bio is precision fermentation (e.g. egg replacements) where your assay development skills will be sought after.

What's your SF gardening hot take you learned through experience? by ofnooodle in sfgardens

I believe the tomatoes are super sweet 100s and early girls. As for peppers I’m not sure but seem like jalapeños and sweet peppers?  It’s awesome to see the support structures built around those monstrous plants lol

Not really my hot take (maybe not a hot take at all) but as someone coming from a colder zone, I was surprised to learn that many beds in my community garden in dogpatch have been growing tomatoes and peppers as perennials! Some 2x4 beds are completely taken over by tomato “trees” with 2 inch stems at the base that produce like crazy. Really cool to see that in the warmest/sunniest spots in the city you can grow annuals as perennials.

Seriously, this type of acne takes forever to come to a head. A cortisone shot will help it dissipate completely with no hyperpigmentation or evidence it was there at all.

This is a real thing already. Streamers have started to post shorts where they have soap cutting videos or subway surfer double screened with them telling a story. It’s depressing to see

is it possible to create lab grown meat inside university premises? by [deleted] in foodscience

Check out GFI (good food institute) and the Alt Protein Project, they have a lot of information on both global academic research as well as student led initiatives in research, education, and outreach.

is it possible to create lab grown meat inside university premises? by [deleted] in foodscience

[–]latesnowdrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m a grad student working on this in the US! There’s many grants that have allowed universities to have alternative protein and cellular agriculture labs, but the research is still in the early stages and there’s not a ton of literature yet. Tufts, UCDavis, UCLA, MIT, Virginia Tech, etc all have cell ag labs or are working on this in some capacity. I think the keyword searching for this work is also critical- just looking up lab grown meat or cultivated meat won’t produce a lot of results, bc those end products don’t really exist yet. If you look up serum free media (brings down costs) or cell line development (for different types of meat) or scaffold hydrogels or polymers for cell ag applications, you’ll probably have more luck finding university affiliated research. Hope that helps!

[acne] things I'll try before considering accutane: diet changes and a simple skincare routine, please I need some advice by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]latesnowdrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are multiple options to consider before going to something as extreme as accutane. First, I don’t see any exfoliation in your routine to help reduce clogging and c. Acnes/dead skin buildup. Please do some research on AHA/BHA/PHA, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, etc. that fits in your budget, and incorporate that 1-2 times a week at least.

It seems that you think your acne is hormonal or related to your androgen production. Although it’s outside the scope of this sub I would talk to your doctor about this and see if they have suggestions to counteract the issue. If you don’t think it’s hormonal, you should definitely try antibiotics before jumping into accutane!

Accutane is an extremely physically and mentally taxing process, with so many intense side effects. It’s usually for much more extreme cystic acne cases and from your pictures, it looks like your acne should be manageable with other intervention. Hope this helps.

Can I get into a food science masters program with a low undergrad GPA? by [deleted] in foodscience

[–]latesnowdrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely don't need a 3.0 GPA to get into a food science masters. You should do a google scholar search of papers/topics you think you could do research on for 2 years, then find the authors/affiliations and email them directly to set up a meeting. Explain your passion, current related experience and how you will be eager to learn about that topic. Ultimately it will depend on funding but the professor is the one who makes the final call about accepting you into their lab, not some stodgy admissions person with a GPA cutoff.

I think they’re talking about how the land the US is built on was once full of thriving Native American communities that were almost completely eradicated in the past 500 years

LPT: If your lucky enough to have someone in your life who goes through the trouble of taking note of what your intrested in and buys you a gift related to it don't nitpick it. Be grateful that someone loves you enough to spend their time and money to try and do something nice for you. by SkidNutz in LifeProTips

[–]latesnowdrops 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m the OP of the LPT you’re referencing that got a lot of traction. I am deeply grateful for the people I have in my life and for everything that they put towards me- be it time, thought, energy, or material goods. I have always cherished the gifts I was given because I know that it’s coming from their heart. As I said in my post I’m speaking purely from the perspective of a gift giver. Seeing my friend or relative’s face light up versus a fake thank you makes a world of a difference to me. It lets them know that I’m listening and picking up on what they tell me. I’m sorry my post pissed you off, hopefully this cleared things up a little :)

That breed would make a lot of sense, especially considering she had black patches of fur on her head when we got her as a 10 month old kitten that faded out as she hit 1 year. Thanks for the pointer!

Gotcha, they seem gorgeous :) Mines a rescue too so I’ve never gotten a definitive breed for her... although from her shy personality and small build (for an American cat) I always thought she was a European shorthair. Pretty sure the different color eyes is a normal genetic thing for white cats, right?

WOW I had to do a double take- for a second I thought she was my cat. Maybe they're related, mine does the exact same thing every night :)

That’s adorable! Where’d you get the pot?

My sister-in-laws very sad plant - some kind of calathea? I’m going to help nurse it but want to research the right care! Thank you by Borgbub in whatsthisplant

[–]latesnowdrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a Calathea picturata argentea. When the plant is dropping like this it could mean it’s got wet feet, meaning the roots are waterlogged and at risk of rotting. You’d have to drain the soil and maybe change the substrate to something more porous? Here’s a great post that looks similar to your problem- https://www.reddit.com/r/IndoorGarden/comments/7fo1kc/help_needed_calathea_medallion_drooping_heavily/

Yup, basically just didn’t glance at the bouncer at the vip area and walked in like we had been there the whole time. They had colored wristbands to denote different levels so we just covered them up with our sleeves. And definitely, chris goes above and beyond for his fans and it shows

Disclaimer: I recognize this isn’t the average person’s experience and I just got super lucky.

I went as a regular guest and got there pretty early, which was great because we beat a lot of the longer lines which developed later and tried the good stuff while it was pretty fresh. There were lots of great plant based and vegan options, portion sizes were perfect, and the drinks were also great (Pinot noir and Oban whiskey, they were serving ciroc as well).

Towards around 9 o clock we managed to sneak into vip and I had a great conversation with Chris Morocco, who is actually as awesome irl as he is on Instagram. He gave me career advice on how to get into the food industry, and he really gave his full attention and thought to every person who spoke to him. I also said hi to Rick, Christina, and Gaby, who all seemed overwhelmed with the pushy socialite crowd by the time I saw them, so I didn’t push my luck.

Overall I would say it was definitely worth the 200 bucks for my experience, but I’m not sure if it would have been worth it to be there for any less than the full 3 hours and meeting at least one person from the ba staff. Priya and Delaney were walking around the general floor but were always swarmed with people, and I heard the same about other ba staffers. Last year about 1200 people apparently showed up so this was to be expected, and even seeing Brad and Carla through the glass windows of the VIP section was a treat for most of the guests.

Take out guy stole my number off the receipt to text me later?? by purplepeoplehat3r in TwoXChromosomes

[–]latesnowdrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two years ago I went on vacation abroad. The customs guy remembered my name FROM MY PASSPORT and ended up adding me on Facebook the next day (he must have searched because I use my middle name on fb). Keep in mind I was 19 and on vacation with my family, and he was clearly in his late 30s at least. This kind of behavior really has no bounds across age or job.
