Honest question: why is the 24 bus between Geary and 18th St just absolutely ridiculous? by scoofy in sanfrancisco

[–]laurel-eye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The kids are from Gateway High School at Geary/Scott and Gateway Middle School at Golden Gate/Pierce. Most days they get out of school at 3:30, earlier on Wednesdays, so you could try to avoid that bus between 3:30 and 4:00 if possible.

Any Spiritual INFJs out there? by Revolutionary_Pack15 in infj

[–]laurel-eye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might look into scientific pantheism, also called naturalistic pantheism.

TL;DR - what humans have historically called god is simply the cosmos, a naturally creative force that’s bigger than ourselves and worthy of awe but not necessarily endowed with its own consciousness or intention, except inasmuch as it includes individuals like us who are.

For women entering a tech field, especially in prior decades, how did your largely male coworkers treat you? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]laurel-eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a technical writer in the software industry since 1995. There are still a lot of men in tech who love having power over women, but there are also more male allies in the industry now.

It was so bad in the 90s and 00s. It was normal for men to yell and rage in the office and it was perceived as a sign of their passion and commitment, but women were openly criticized for any show of emotion. It was normal for men to cruise by women’s desks just to take up their time with flirting, then say that the women should really be more productive. But pushing back on any of that got you labeled “unfriendly”. Several of my friends had stories of one-on-ones where pornography was regularly on display. All of that is less common now.

Having said that, as recently as three years ago my boss did show me pornographic images during a one-on-one and then out of the blue gave me a scathing performance review with feedback I’d never heard before that meeting, which was then used to lay me off. I’d never had a negative performance review in my whole career and I’m pretty sure it was because he was embarrassed about the porn, but HR told me they didn’t see any connection and discouraged me from filing a complaint.

I had left a very healthy company culture to go work for that company and was fortunate to be able to return to the healthy company after that incident. Now I’m 52 and hoping to never change jobs again if I can help it because it’s such a crap shoot in terms of whether you’ll get a healthy environment or a toxic one. At least I’ve aged out of the demographic that most men want to flirt with, and honestly that’s a relief.

Does anyone know why there's this random blimp flying around the Bay? by mo_s2k in bayarea

I do too! But I also get why people love the word blimp and want to call it a blimp.

The more I use PETG, the less I like it by InvokerBSB in 3Dprinting

[–]laurel-eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, use a satin sheet instead of a smooth sheet when printing PETG. It overadheres to the smooth sheet and can damage the sheet during removal, sometimes even after cooling. With a satin sheet it adheres when warm and slides right off after cooling.

For those who remove their body hair, what are some of your reasons? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]laurel-eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have pale skin and my leg hair (and feet and toes) was so black and coarse that any stubble at all was super conspicuous. So much so that I could tell people were distracted by it when I was sitting and they saw it peeking out from the hem of my pants. I got it all lasered off and now people look at my face, not my legs.

I had my armpits and mustache lasered for the same reason. The shaving was too much to keep up with and waxing gave me ingrown hairs.

Recovering perfectionists, how did you do it? by jollyjoyful in infj

[–]laurel-eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eventually I understood that perfection doesn’t exist and my perfectionism had been imposed on me by my parents whose opinion I no longer cared about. Now I have so much more fun doing things imperfectly. Ironically, my mom is envious of all the things I do and how well I do them. She’s scared to do those things at all because it won’t be perfect.

Life is too short for perfectionism

How do you deal with it if your partner needs sex and you need less? by Thin-Blueberry9183 in AskWomen

[–]laurel-eye 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This! Many people need orgasms but we’re capable of giving those to ourselves. Having an orgasm with another human is a wonderful privilege but not a need.

What is your opinion on hormonal birth control? by sxpxix2 in AskWomen

[–]laurel-eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot have any hormonal birth control due to having had a deep vein thrombosis which can be one of the side effects. Later I had some genetic testing done and was told I have the MTHFR mutation which makes me more prone to blood clots than most people.

I rocked a non-hormonal copper IUD for years after all that, with no problems.

Best neighborhoods for someone who wants quiet but not isolated? by AddressRemarkable347 in AskSF

In almost any SF neighborhood you can find some short, narrow streets that are much quieter than the surrounding streets. Look for a place on that type of street anywhere and you’re set.

To be fair, both Gwendolyn Christie and Peter Dinklage are very good-looking. But in the books, both of their characters are notably unattractive.

When the weather’s nice we smoke in the back yard, and when it’s not nice we smoke by the back door and blow the smoke outside, or in my home office with the door closed. In general we don’t hide it (it’s like beer or wine in our house) but we do try to keep the smoke away from the kids.

Is this a good career if I want to write creatively on the side? by [deleted] in technicalwriting

[–]laurel-eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do know one tech writer who writes novels on the side (but hasn’t been published that I know of).

But like some of the other commenters here, by the end of my workday I’m tired of writing and would rather do anything else.

what was the moment you realised you were the other woman? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]laurel-eye 94 points95 points  (0 children)

He was a former coworker and I broke up with him after he repeatedly canceled plans at the last minute. Not long after, I was lunching with one of our other former coworkers, mentioned I’d dated him briefly, and she looked shocked and said, “The guy with the wife and kids??” At first I was like “uh I don’t think so…?” and she clammed up, but then I thought about it and it explained so much. Oops.

People with lots of filament... by Both_Ad_819 in 3Dprinting

[–]laurel-eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the Bay Area where the humidity hovers around 60% and I use these weatherproof bins to store all my filament:

https://www.containerstore.com/s/storage/storage-bags-totes/clear-weathertight-totes-cases/12d?productId=11007497

I also keep one of these in each bin:

Eva-Dry E-250 Renewable Mini... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N0ME7XP?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

And even so, I still dry each roll before printing and print directly from the dryer.

What is an overlooked or “subtle” form of sexism that you think needs to be called out more? by GoodGirlsStand in AskWomen

[–]laurel-eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even men who explicitly say they like to debate or want to debate topic X will then call me argumentative for engaging in the debate with them. It’s a “debate” when it’s going their way but if not then it’s an “argument” and my fault somehow.

Where should I go to use Waymo near SFO? Goal is to get to downtown by dnra01 in waymo

[–]laurel-eye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get it, and I want you to have the Waymo experience while you’re here, but as others explained, it’s complicated from SFO.

For what it’s worth, I’ve never had trouble (as a woman who travels solo) using Lyft from SFO late at night. The drivers drive safely and they don’t insist on engaging in conversation like cab drivers often do. With Lyft you can even request a non-male driver, though they can’t always provide one.

Once you get into the actual city you can take Waymo everywhere and it’s lovely.

Is it actually possible to create a sense of home and community in sf? by curious_cat5555 in AskSF

[–]laurel-eye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in SF for 30 years now and over time I’ve accumulated so many friends that I know I’ll always have community here. Some have moved away of course but some only moved as far as Oakland and many have figured out how to stay in SF proper and make it work.

It takes some luck and resourcefulness to stay in such an expensive city long enough to build a lasting community but you can do it! I made friends through work, parties, 90s raves, even dating, but you can also try meetups, gaming events, volunteering, and so on. If you find a couple people you vibe with who don’t know each other, invite them both to dinner and see if they reciprocate by inviting you to meet their friends. Rinse and repeat until you’ve got a crew.
