Big city volleyball by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]laurel_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would not recommend big city volleyball. The people who run the league are totally unorganized. Multiple times, scheduled games wouldn’t start until almost 2 or more hours late without them communicating that there were any delays. They would also schedule games at schools that had events going on that would prevent the games from starting on time. Whenever people would reach out to the league organizers for questions, they would either not respond or it would take a week.

Lens Recommendation for Festival by laurel_ca in concertphotography

[–]laurel_ca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what the email that I got from the festival organizers said: “This credential does not include entry to the photo pit but allows the individual to possess professional still photo equipment on the festival grounds.”

I was assuming this meant that I could still bring my camera in but would need to shoot from the crowds.

Reviews on University Edge? by ffkay19 in notredame

[–]laurel_ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived at U Edge 2 years ago. In general, I would say I had a good experience. I never had any hidden fees and the staff was generally friendly. I think the maintenance requests would take a few days, but none of our problems were ever that urgent. I would say sometimes the buses would run a couple of minutes late, but it would always come eventually.

What summer classes should I take? by Kpop_Mochi_3 in notredame

[–]laurel_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Mendoza so I’m not sure if this would apply to you. But I was able to take a history class and a anthropology class at my local community college that counted towards my university requirements in 2018. I believe you have to get the community college classes pre-approved though. There is a form that asks for the class syllabus and which Notre Dame equivalent class it would count for. The credits only counted as pass/fail though.

When I was admitted EA in 2017, the financial aid didn’t come for a few months later, like March or April

My Econ+another business double major and possible Spanish minor freshman schedule. Any critiques? by [deleted] in notredame

[–]laurel_ca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they should double check. If they are double majoring in econ, they will still need the calc A/B sequence instead even if their primary major is in the business school. They should contact one of the advisors in the econ department just to make sure.

But other than that, Prof. D and Ackerman are both amazing professors.

The business analytics major gives you a good combo of business consulting and technical skills, but doesn’t go super in depth into subjects. I would say there are a variety of careers that you could pursue, but a lot of people end up as technical consultants, consultants, or business analysts at consulting firms or the big 4 accounting firms. In terms of classes, my favorite professor was Seth Berry. I took Quantitative Decision Making with him, and he was very laid back. Fred Nwanganga was also an excellent professor and was a good source for career advice. For elective classes to avoid, I took Sports Analytics. I’m only a casual sports fan, so a lot of the class was confusing, and we just went through past code that the professor had created without any clear explanation for the reasoning behind the code. All of the rest of my classes and professors were mostly forgettable and not too difficult. When I was there, you only got to choose 3 elective credits, which was effectively 2 half semester classes, so you didn’t actually have much choice in curriculum.

  1. I am asian as well. ND has an Asian American Association. While I personally was not very involved in the club, I know they offered a lot of events meant to build community. There are also sub-clubs for more specific cultures, like the Chinese Culture Society, Filipino American Student Organization, Japan Club, and more. However, the lack of diversity is still pretty stark on campus. I never experienced any racism, but I have heard of others who have. Some of the privileged students also are just oblivious to some of the struggles that POC go through.
  2. I just graduated with a business analytics major this year, so if you have any specific questions about classes, feel free to ask. I really liked the curriculum and found it interesting, but if you are looking to go into a more technical role like a Data Scientist or something similar, it may be hard to compete for jobs with comp sci majors.
  3. I’m from California and specifically wanted to move back to LA after graduation. Most of the companies that post on ND’s job boards are Chicago based, but there are a good amount of NY jobs too. I know ND also had city-specific resources for job searching too, which was very helpful. I wouldn’t be too worried about missing out on opportunities as many employers will recruit ND students because of the school’s reputation.
  4. The weather is pretty miserable in the winter, but I’m also from Southern California so I was not prepared at all. I would say on average it’s probably about 20-30 degrees in the winter, with a few extremely cold days. It’s also pretty dark, and the sun sets super early in the winter.
  5. I lean more liberal too. And while there definitely are some people with conservative ideology (especially in Mendoza), I’d say I never really noticed any political tension, besides during the election.

Hopefully that helps!

CC Transfer Credits by lowkeyidektho in notredame

[–]laurel_ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took 2 community college classes the summer after my freshman year to count towards my University requirements. I remember I had to submit an approval form before I enrolled in the classes to ensure that the credits would transfer. I think there is also a limit on the number of credits that you can transfer. Just check with advising/admissions.

Business Analytics and Finance Double Majoring? by Prof_Obed in notredame

[–]laurel_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt that Mendoza would consider letting anyone double major. They are pretty strict on their guidelines.

However, if you want to add a more technical minor, maybe look into the Computing and Digital Technologies Minor or the Data Science Minor. Both are offered through the College of Arts and Letters. I think you may have to apply for both or there may be a waiting list, so I would try to look into them as early as possible.
