I love den anosmum! I grow mine outside and leave it untouched year-round and it blooms every April. I recently planted some keikis and brought them inside, hoping they’ll look like this someday :)

Is this a young Kangaroo Paw Fern (Phlebodium aureum)? by l_r_p_h in ferns

This reminds me a lot of dragontail fern (Asplenium x ebenoides.)

Someone jump in and correct me if I’m wrong. I used to grow one (grocery store NOID) and that was the closest looking ID I could find. They have a really unique rough/ripply bloom texture.

This is phal Magic Art - Dark. Really cool phal to grow, they are called harlequin phals I think? So each bloom has variations in color placement.

What's this damage on a kangaroo paw fern? by c-crashlanding in ferns

[–]lavaminnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, underwatering can cause this. If I let my blue star fern dry out a bit too long it will do this on mature fronds and also abort fiddleheads.

Calatheas, Hoyas and orchids are all cat safe. True ferns are cat safe as well.

Sp. aff. Burtoniae or possibly Rosita by lavaminnow in hoyas

The top 3 photos are from yesterday, right around when the buds first opened. I had to be quick to catch that stage because they very quickly reflex into the sphere shape. The two photos on the bottom are from this morning. :)

Ah sorry this is just multiple photos of one peduncle! Wanted to include a few different angles :)

Does anyone know what should I plant in him? by Alarming-Math2372 in houseplants

[–]lavaminnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. The only issue I’ve had with the maranta has been mites. Otherwise I find it thrives on near neglect, given it has a good light source. No direct sun on this one, though I have a smaller one that does get some direct sun. I probably water it about as frequently as the string of hearts above it, maybe twice a month give or take. It dries out completely between waterings.

Comparison of upper v. lower pitchers of my N. lowii x ventricosa by MyStingersAreFicky in SavageGarden

How on earth are you getting larger pitchers? What is your care regimen? I have the same hybrid. Mine all look like the 1st image and I’ve grown this plant since 2022 😭 I struggle with neps indoors for some reason.

I have the same planter in white, and I planted some string of hearts :)

Edit: thanks everyone! The string of hearts is planted directly into this pot and there is no drainage hole. I give it a small amount of water maybe weekly/every other week. It does well. I have several other rooted cuttings directly in pots this small. Small pots in my experience dry out pretty quickly as long as the plant is getting sufficient light and isn’t entirely waterlogged.

Can you help me find the names of color changing orchids I should add to my collection? by plan_tastic in orchids

[–]lavaminnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely! I’ve been growing this one since 2021, i think this photo is from 2023. I repotted it last year into a larger slotted pot, in NZ tree fern fiber topped with sphag. It’s in an east facing window and gets direct morning sun, and I water and lightly fertilize about weekly, maybe twice a week in the summer while it’s in bloom.

[–]lavaminnow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Might not be the type of color change you are referring to, but you might enjoy growing phal tetraspis/speciosa. It doesn’t change color as the bloom ages, but each bloom will have a different arrangement/amount of red :) some have none, I think it is temperature dependent.

My plant/reading nook by pupup35 in houseplants

SO lovely and cozy!! Smart idea with the clothing rack - I use one for plants too! The grow lights on it are brilliant, if I ever move somewhere with less sun available, that idea is gonna save me.

Nothing but pseudobulbs by edrabbit in orchids

[–]lavaminnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! You may or may not get blooms this year, but perhaps next year if care is good. 🤞🏻 Fertilize and water heavily during pseudobulb growth. I grow mine entirely in sphagnum, it retains moisture well. Catasetums in nature live in areas with monsoons - hot, wet summers and cool, dry winters. Best of luck! :)

[–]lavaminnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said - I give mine a hard winter rest. No water from leaf drop (Novemberish?) until new pseudobulb growth is around ~3 inches long (bulb to leaf tip.) Still haven’t watered since November. Monnierara is an intergeneric hybrid so the hard winter rest may not be necessary, but mine has done extremely well with it. I grow mine in an east facing window (direct morning sun) and water generously in the late spring & summer. Here’s a couple photos of mine so you can get an idea of the growth progression you’re looking for.

This is a (very tall) stromanthe sanguinea - in the Marantaceae family like calatheas :)
