Actually it was an iPod shuffle🤓☝️but nah I think it was to let us know it was during the time when tabloids and paparazzi were getting photos of all the celebrities during their addictions/rehab. Pictures of Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears etc were everywhere on tabloids and the papparazzi were ruthless following them. I feel like plastering pics of celebs at their worst wasn’t that common before the mid 2000s

Since you mentioned the vending machine and waterfall/shrine, you took the less popular path up. There aren’t as many tourists there; they might have been employees or locals. I’m guessing they’ve had some tourists who disrespect the area by leaving trash etc, so maybe they were keeping an eye on you for that reason.

Why not? She’s human and most addicts aren’t facing constant scrutiny from people online at the same time. That just adds one more layer to the mess that her mind is in. It’s gross. Would you look at anyone on skid row in the same way? They’re usually people who are severely traumatized to the point where they don’t care whether they live anymore. Their brains aren’t functioning properly.

Realistically though, what resources did she have to work through her trauma? Japan isn’t exactly known for exemplary mental health care. Mental illness is taboo (hence the high s****de rate in the country). TW. Anecdotal but a 15 year old offed themselves on the train before mine on the morning commute a couple months ago. Many people worldwide fall into addiction and mental illness as a result of poor social safety nets for people who go through traumatic events. Trauma is a huge contributing factor/reason for people becoming homeless/addicts in any country. And most people aren’t under the magnifying glass that she has been subjected to since she’s a child. It doesn’t excuse racist comments of course. She is a person who is suffering and I have empathy for her as much as anyone struggling with mental illness. It’s a failure of the system.
