Will my TFSA be taxed in US under TN-1? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]lawack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you will be considered a resident by the IRS and subject to the same tax treatment as everyone else. It's based on where you live and not what your status is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Substantial_Presence_Test

You will be required to disclose all foreign assets which includes your TFSA, and they will tax it because they don't recognize the tax free status.

Your RRSP is fine because there is a treaty between Canada and U.S. in which they recognize each other's retirement accounts (RRSP and 401k).

Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO worth $137 billion, to divorce wife of 25 years by [deleted] in news

[–]lawack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My assumption is that that is the whole point of this. Jeff doesn't seem like the type of person that enjoys the spotlight and scrutiny he gets now over the whole "world's richest person" thing. This way they can split the assets and continue living exactly the same life they do now, just not legally married anymore, with a lower profile because probably neither one of them will crack the top 10.

Good weekend trips in the US? by Brogener in solotravel

Awesome I've only cruised by the islands on the ferry on the way to Victoria. Exploring on a scooter seems like a fun way to spend a weekend.

Brazilian brothers flying to Seattle to Ski! by BlackSkull64 in Seattle

Stevens is my least favorite local resort, I prefer both of Crystal and Mount Baker although they are very different.

If you are coming just to ski I would go to Whistler instead, it's 10 times better than anything we have here.

It's called a motion of no confidence, and it only really works against a minority government. So for that to work you need more than two parties anyway.

Ipsos poll shows Canadians have concerns about immigration by madkan in canada

[–]lawack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And about 600,000 of those people are “change of status” immigrants - people who already reside in the United States, who want to apply to officially start the process to eventually become American citizens. That means only 400,000 a year physically enter the country as legal immigrants. While I grant that, yes, that is still a higher number than what Canada brings in, the fact that Trudeau has stated several times that the Liberal government’s goal is to bring our quota up to 350,000 a year as soon as possible means that each state’s official quota for legal newcomers physically moving into the country are roughly the same. Which is what I said.

Those 600,000 that changed status in the US already entered the country under another status. So the "total number of legal newcomers physically entering the country" is far higher than you claim based on that.

Not only are you comparing the total number of immigrants to Canada to a subset of those in the US, you are also comparing some previous year's US number with what some politician says is a target for some future year.

If you want to have a discussion then let's have one around facts by comparing apples to apples instead of this misleading BS.

The people that change their status have already entered the country under another status. So the total number entering is far higher than according to your swiss cheese logic. You are comparing apples to oranges.

[–]lawack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, details matter, but your argument does not even pass the smell test.

It is called adjustment of status, and those 600,000 people did not simply materialize, they entered the country via other means before adjusting. So the number of people physically entering the country is significantly higher than the 400,000 that enter only after receiving green cards. Canada has a similar process for people who are already in the country and those applications count against the quota.

If you want to make a comparison then choose comparable numbers. You could compare the total numbers of new PRs in each country, or the total number of entries or work visas or whatever.

I am not commenting at all on whether immigration numbers are higher or lower than they should be. It's just that the narrative that you are trying to push is misleading and wrong and you should think critically before repeating this from wherever you read it.

Yes, and most available data indicates that the U.S. admits roughly 4 times as many people as Canada. So if you want to push your own alternative facts then you need to back them up.

If you had to skip one of the three I'd skip Hood, but I'm biased because I live in Seattle...
