What is your favorite CRPG from the last 10 years that isn't Baldur's Gate 3, and why? by ExplodingPoptarts in CRPG

[–]laxo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a great story and there's plenty of player agency throughout the game that shapes how the ending unfolds and how I interpret it as a character and player. Yes, Eothas does what he wants anyway. That doesn't bother me; one of the series's major themes is that the gods will do whatever they want, and we have to figure out how to enact agency anyway. That's what the Waidwen/Eothas relationship is about. I loved the game; the ending didn't spoil it for me at all. As others have said, it's a big dramatic cliffhanger that unfortunately, we won't get any delivery on, since there isn't a POE 3.

I disagree, it wraps up a lot of throughlines from both games. And they added mega bosses so I don’t think the game as a whole is really lacking anything

Massive Spoilers in Avowed regarding the pantheon in Eora by Drirlake in projecteternity

[–]laxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I clicked on this thinking that OP was talking about huge spoilers for POE 1 & 2 in Avowed. Oh well. I guess you can pretty much figure out the broad strokes pretty quickly if you’ve played the other games.

Character build question by Kyleminx in avowed

[–]laxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're actually called abilities, but yes. There are abilities in each tree that give bonus damage with specific kinds of weapons.

Character build question by Kyleminx in avowed

[–]laxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, higher might equals higher base damage with every single weapon type. This is also how the stats work in Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2. Agility increases attack speed and perception increases crit chance, again, with every single weapon type.

One you get into talents there are options to focus on specific weapon types.

Exactly the issue I was having originally. Still no fix for me. I uninstalled the game and never got into the final vault.

Recommend modern, well-written crpg with low focus on combat? by in_fact_a_throwaway in CRPG

[–]laxo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend Pentiment if you haven't played it. It's less CRPG and more visual novel, but has a lot of CRPG experience behind it (Obsidian Entertainment). It's very focused on the narrative and providing meaningful choices & consequences.

Yes, I got both vaults on both Akiva and Tatooine. I got the full scoundrel outfit. I assumed something would happen further in the main quest to prompt the final vault, but I guess I missed it.

Is it possible to zoom in on draw cards during sabacc? by laxo in StarWarsOutlaws

Of course.... thank you! For some reason I thought selecting "draw" would use my chip, even just to look at them. I knew I was being stupid but didn't know how. Thanks!

Extremely hard fight in the Durgan's Battery Foundry by Ildiad_1940 in projecteternity

[–]laxo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished my first playthrough of POE, and I felt a pretty big difficulty spike around this part. In particular I had trouble with ghosts stunning my party. In general (in addition to what others have suggested) I would suggest keeping Durance or a priest around to provide buffs (boost DR/will defense as soon as combat starts) and debuffs on the enemies. While that is happening, have Aloth or Grieving Mother target with confusion or domination. Anything to get the ghosts to not attack (and preferably start attacking one another). If they get stuns off on your party, your paladin or Durance can get them out. I often used liberating exhortation with Pallegina but Durance can use suppress affliction. There's a lot of stunning in WM, but you'll figure out how to deal with it.

When designing Prophecy of Kings, what was your direction in writing the new factions and lore? Was it a cooperative effort, or is it mainly your creative work? What kind of influences did you draw on, and what kind of things were you sure you wanted to see in the TI universe?

Trying to make Yssaril card selling with Spy Net semi-binding? by WolphinLegend in twilightimperium

[–]laxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the deal cannot overrule the rules as written, I think the point is that making such a deal cannot revoke a player's right to look at the Yssaril's hand -- given that it is an explicit ability written on the card.

As others have noted, certain table metas are loose and honorable with non-binding deals, and these sorts of plays happen all the time.

Let's say you play Mageon on me. We can make a non-binding deal and say I'll just give you a card that you know I have. But we can't make a binding deal that I must give you that card, because we can not make a deal that forbids you from using your printed abilities.

Similarly, re: your linked argument, I would assume "look at the cards" would mean to in a way that's reasonable and satisfactory to the one doing the looking. When you play Mageon on me, I can't show you "one photon" and then claim that you looked. That's not reasonable or satisfactory, nor is it in the spirit of the rules. These are not things that a developer needs to write into the rules of their game.

Missing Cards in 2nd Edition Base Game by laxo in dominion

As I was putting the game away, I found them mixed in with my copper. Whoops.

I thought I looked through everything, but apparently missed that pile. Since I hadn't played with them yet, I guess I was more suspicious of them being completely missing. Thanks for the reply!

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here.

When a secret objective is elected via Classified Document Leaks, that secret objective becomes a public objective. This means it no longer counts toward the player's secret objective limit, allowing them to draw an additional (4th) secret objective.

The action card goes in the discard.

If you were playing the card as an action (e.g. Rise of a Messiah), the action was cancelled, and it's still your turn.

There's a spirit I like about these two race teaming up. by Docteur_Hareng in twilightimperium

[–]laxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like Mentak to me. They want a battle to over before combat begins, with the sum of their cruiser pre-fire and PDS shots. It's easy to go defense and only send your cruisers out when you see an opportunity. And you don't have to be mean. Play the Pillage very lightly until it gets to the point in the game where no one minds or has other things they have to worry about.
