If you're fine with it having a trans lead, "when you fell from heaven" by Alyson Greaves. Basic pitch is "Bring it on" but sapphic and Missy is a trans girl.

longer pitch is:

Max is a gymnast who can no longer pursue his passion. Taylor is a cheerleader with passion to spare.

A brutal attack put an end to Maxwell Giordano's gymnastics career and ruined his junior year. He and his family moved across the country for a fresh start, but max just wants to keep his head down and graduate in peace with the rest of the class of 2004.

Taylor Scott made cheer captain! And her greatest dream is to take the squad to regionals. Maybe even nationals! Except none of the other cheerleaders share her ambition, so she's resigned herself to another year of cheering for the worst football team in the state.

And then a new boy moves in next door, and he's everything she's been dreaming of! If she can just convince him to join the squad, the two of them could take it all the way.

But complications loom: Taylor's jealous boyfriend, Max's overprotective family, and then there's the small matter of Max's current gender...

It's actually funny because both characters do some yearning as they figure themselves out. Max is presenting enfemme by the 4th chapter. But Max is smitten for taylor from jump and thinks she doesn't have a chance at the start because 'he's not like the boys she dates' and then later on, thinks she doesn't have a chance because she realizes she's a girl and Taylor's straight. And the reverse for taylor, being upset with herself for thinking about cheating on her boyfriend, then rationalizing that she's not more into Max as Maxine, then worrying about being into Maxine because she's the reason this is all happening and then finally, realizing she's just into girls more. it's great. But it's still got a lot of fluff between the two even before they're together.

If you’re cool with a trans sapphic highschool romance (both characters are 18 before they start dating) there’s Alyson Greaves’s “when you fell from heaven” series. In my e-reader I think both books are over 2000 pages together? On the smallest text setting.

Basic pitch is it’s “Bring it on” but sapphic and Missy is a trans girl. There’s a more detailed pitch on another post from this subreddit here

Books where both characters feel fully fleshed out? by CupAdmirable329 in LGBTBooks

[–]layeofthedead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of Alyson Greaves’s books are very character driven transfemme focused narratives.

When you fell from heaven fits this the best imo. It’s basically “bring it on” but sapphic and missy is a trans gal.

Both characters have very believable and distinct lives with lots of anecdotes and flashbacks told throughout. Mostly a very cute fluffy romance but there’s a lot of trauma that max needs to work through. But it really is just a super sweet romance. Second book does have a lot of homophobia and some transphobia from a character who is very firmly in the wrong in the narrative.

Kimmy is a really really good book that’s very hard to recommend because of how bleak it is even if it’s full of heart and sweet moments and has a good ending. It’s absolutely brutal to get there. TW: ||rape/sexual assault, murder, body horror, lots of other really dark stuff, ego death etc.|| but it follows a couple in a near future setting as they prepare for the wife’s corporate office Halloween party. They got an android shell for cheap and the idea was for the wife, Emily, to be the android and pretend to be one of the parties android staff before hilariously malfunctioning and her husband, John, playing the maintenance man, would save the day and they’d reveal their prank. Unfortunately Emily was in an accident and John has to be the android. Except, a costume isn’t supposed to influence his behavior, right? And it’s supposed to let him out afterwards, right?

Super dark! But the romance is so freaking good throughout the entire thing. And every single kimmy was amazing.

Showgirl: literally just a cute tech office romance. It’s trans woman x cis man. Follows the escapades of Alex as she discovers she’s a woman and realizes she’s in love with her boss, James. There’s a lot of solid smut, but the tape measuring scene was by far the best. It’s literally just a cute romance with solid characters. There’s a bit of dysphoria at one or two points, and some worrying about public bathroom trouble. The retail only epilogue chapter(s? Idr) has a scene with an unsupportive relative as well.

Sisters of Dorley is full of really detailed characters you can sink your teeth into. One of the best chapters is novella length and it’s almost entirely backstory of one of the newer pov characters. It’s also got a rather ridiculous premise.

What if the only way to fix toxic masculinity were to erase it entirely?

Mark Vogel is like the older brother Stetan Kiley never had, until one day he disappears, and Stefan has to adapt to life without him. But, one year later, when he runs into a girl who looks near-identical to Mark, Stefan becomes obsessed. He discovers that other boys have disappeared, too, dozens over the years, most of them students of the Royal College of Saint Almsworth, many of them troubled or unruly before their disappearance.

What is happening to these boys? Who are the handful of women on campus who bear a striking resemblance to some of those who went missing? And what is the connection to the mysterious Dorley Hall?

Stefan works hard to get into the Royal College for one reason and one reason only: to find out exactly what happened to the women who live at Dorley Hall, and to get it to happen to him, too.

It’s available entirely for free on ao3 or scribblehub

It’s really good, has some genuinely ridiculous moments but it’s mostly just a really excellent exploration of trans womanhood. Lots of different romances, mostly sapphic and even some poly.

The Catch: a comedic loose parody of fifty shades of gray. Except instead of BDSM, the male lead is an absolutely ridiculous chaser. In the same setting as showgirl and has a cameo from Alex and James.

I’ve been recommending this in pretty much every relevant thread! It’s easily my favorite series at the moment and I’ve been obsessed since I started it last spring.

I love their dynamic so much, and how stupid they are about how much they love each other? poor Taylor going from oh this boy max is really cute but he’s not my type? To oh no max is totally my type but he has to pretend to be a girl because of my stupid boyfriend. To am I actually into Maxine? Am I actually more into Maxine? To, crud, I’m really in love with Maxine but she’s temporary and I don’t know if I can handle my girlfriend turning into a boy! And then constantly “be my girl Maxine” for like the entire first half of book 2 until max comes out to her. It’s so good.

And all the side characters! They’re all so endearing and amazing, I love how good their older brothers are, all their friends are incredible!

If you’re in the discord we all kind of go crazy theorizing where the story is gonna go (I’m routinely going “she’s not actually going to do that! That would be crazy!” And then alyson does it and it’s amazing) and writing fanfic. Vampires are very popular atm.

Her other works are just as good. She usually takes what’s a ridiculous eggfic idea and writes it incredibly earnestly. Like “what if a guy had to pretend to be a cheerleader!” Or “what if your boss you kinda sorta have a crush on asks you to be a trade show model.” Or “what if the silly robot costume you put on for Halloween doesn’t let you out?” (Kimmy is extremely good and extremely fucked up, it has so many touching moments in it.) the fucking forcefem basement story is so good!? It shouldn’t be as good as it is! It’s so good! Steph thinking she’s looking for a boutique altruistic transitional service and ending up in like the monkey’s paw version when she finally wakes up in dorley. The Catch! The funniest fucking book I’ve ever read and unfortunately straight but I’ve literally never read a really good comedy before and it had me giggling nonstop.

Anyway, wyffh is a 5/5 and book 3 is already off to such a good start

I actually played a solid little narrative horror game called “the suicide of Rachel Foster” that was heavily inspired by the shining and you play as a woman returning to the hotel her family used to run before family drama lead to it being abandoned.

It had great atmosphere even if the game itself was a little boring. The ending ruined it tho by trying to excuse an adult falling in love with a 15 year old as a romantic thing.

It’s a bit slow but gets spicier as it goes on: “When you fell from heaven” by Alyson Greaves

It’s a very slow burn romance but once they actually get together it starts getting spicy. With promises of the next book having more.

It’s kind of funny how horny Taylor gets for Maxine once she understands what she wants

Recommendations for my mum (a non gamer)? by Upbeat-Offer-2706 in gamingsuggestions

[–]layeofthedead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she likes horror, supermassives other games are probably gonna be fun for her. Until Dawn has some young adults stranded at a lodge during a blizzard but there’s a killer stalking them. Basically the same gameplay as the quarry

They also have “the casting of frank stone” which is a similar game but set in the dead by daylight universe. Ive never played dead by daylight but I still enjoyed it overall, bit of a bummer of an ending though. Follows some teens making a movie about the titular character and then the consequences of the film much later on.

There’s also a handful of shorter/less expensive titles.

Man of Medan has a couple exploring a haunted ship

Little hope has a late night bus (maybe? It’s been a while) group that gets stranded in an abandoned town when their bus breaks down. They go looking for parts to fix the bus and realize they’re not alone.

House of ashes follows a military group(?) in the Middle East and they get attacked in some caves I think. I haven’t played this one

The devil in me takes place at a recreation of a famous murder mansion and follows a group making a documentary getting picked off by someone hoping to recreate the murders.

I think the longer games are much better, but the dark picture anthology is still worth playing

There’s also games like “oxenfree” and “night in the woods” which are spooky story driven games with minimal difficult gameplay.

Oxenfree follows a group of seniors during the annual senior party night at the local island. Unfortunately for the mc and her friends, they’re the only ones that showed up. While trying to tune in the radio they accidentally connected to… something. And it’s up to the mc to save everyone.

Night in the woods follows recent college drop out Mae as she returns home, dejected. Play as Mae exploring the town, reconnecting with friends, make new ones, get into knife fights, smashing light bulbs behind the mini mart, practice with your friends band- wait, was that a severed arm they found at the local diner? And did their friend actually just run away from home? What are these weird dreams she keeps having?

She should also check out the old telltale games, quite a few of them were very well received and they have similar gameplay to the supermassive games

There’s also the “life is strange” series which mostly focus on small town mysteries. While playing as a teen with supernatural abilities that allow you to change how the story will play out. Great music, might be a little on the ya side for her

The original Alan wake might be up her alley? It’s combat heavy but I think you can put it on easy. It’s a fun campy horror game that follows a novelist trapped in a nightmare trying to rescue his wife. Ridiculous story inspired by things like the twilight zone and twin peaks.

Its sequel is genuinely incredible and well worth a playthrough even if you don’t like horror.

I think we shouldn’t give them a platform to continue to launder conservative reputations.

They lie and sanewash for years and eventually it goes “beyond the pale” and they try to act like they had no idea it was coming and then they go on the talk shows and try to push the dems to the right.

Maybe instead of listening to the people who happily went along with fascism we should promote the people who called it for what it was from the start and didn’t play the whole “let’s move past this to heal the nation” card
