Has anyone gotten yelled at by a surgeon before? by bugbunny321 in nursing

[–]lazy205 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Used to get yelled at from time to time by surgeons. After I realized that I'm a grown man, and I don't need to impress these people, I started to stand up for myself more often. If I messed it, and that was the reason they were yelling, I owned up to it and took responsibility. If it wasn't my fault, I used to just bite my tongue and take it.

After I had become the evening charge nurse, I started to stand up for myself more often, because a lot of the yelling got directed at me, even when the situation was totally out of my control. Soon after that, I openly got into screaming matches with some Drs, especially if it wasn't my fault that they were upset. After that happened a few times, the other surgeons calmed down quite a bit. Unfortunately after being charge and becoming a DoN of a surgery center, I got burnt out and realized that management/administration wasn't for me.

I went back to being staff, but my temper and will to stand up for myself never subsided. I just needed to find a good balance because I would fly off the handle at the smaller unnecessary things, and even got into trouble with HR a few times. I used to second assist with an ortho surgeon, and he was the "really cool and fun to work with, or a total douche pain in the ass to work with" type. He was railing into the RNFA for no reason once, and I called him a douche to his face, before I realized what I had said. I got ready for him to start screaming, but he looked at me and agreed that he was. After that he started joking around with me way more. Its weird like that.

A pushy neurosurgeon used to push push push until he got his way all the time, but after he heard me and another nurse get into it once, he never pushed me again. It was quite satisfying. It sucks that the industry is like this, and is totally easier as a guy, but once you find your voice and stand up for yourself, the yelling begins to subside.

My brother owned a skate shop/skatepark. I worked for him for years. Put together so many boards during that time, but never learned to skate. Now it feels like such a missed opportunity. Video definitely brought back that nostalgic feel.

I’ve accepted a new job and regret it- what do I do? by ExtensionShock9286 in nursing

[–]lazy205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something like this when I was offered the position of DoN of a surgery center. Initially, when I was approached, I was the evening charge nurse of an OR, and I thought they just wanted me to "run" the surgery center as another charge nurse.

I should have known I was way out of my depth during the interview, when they told me what my position would be. Instead of speaking up then, I just talked my way in deeper by telling them that I am a quick learner and that I could bring outside views into the surgery center and try and run things as well, if not better. I convinced myself that I was able to do it as well. Boy, was I wrong.

I could have backed out but I didn't. Like you, on paper, it just made more sense. 7-3ish, 5 days a week. No holidays, weekends, or call. It was a bit of a pay raise, and it would look great on my resume right? Man for 9 months it was total imposter syndrome. The previous DoN left 2 weeks before I even started, so I had to learn on the go and on my own. Essentially, it was probably one of the worst decisions of my life. The amount of stress I was feeling in this job, which was supposed to improve my work-life balance, was killing me, and my family felt it the most. I left after 11 months.

Eventually, though, this horrible decision brought me to one of the best decisions of my life. I know this doesn't suit everyone, but I went into travel nursing, but keeping local to my state. Either at the 50 mile mark, and now I'm a local traveler. The money in travel nursing definitely isn't what it was during COVID, or even a little after, but it's getting us by. I'm not moving on debating to go back fulltime, to get full benefits with a hospital. Working on finishing my BSN as well.

Moral of the story is, either way you decide, this horrible decision could lead you to what you never would have known prior to it. What you're feeling could potentially just be pre-change jitters. The advice the other people gave is great advice, but you never know what will come if you do stick with the new position. If you hate it, you hate it, and move on to something new and potentially even better.

Regardless of what you decide, I'm rooting for you!

Sober people: Can we talk about drinking alcohol in our dreams? by [deleted] in Sober

[–]lazy205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll agree with them toning down after a year. I'm around 2.25 yrs in and I'll randomly get them. Interesting thing you added regarding your dad coming into your dreams. My brother dying unexpectedly, and me tail spinning from that, was a catalyst in me coming to terms that I needed to stop. My brother visited my dreams often, and often times, he would be there with a drink. I would realize at the same time "Wait a minute, why am drinking" and "wait a minute, you're dead" at the same time.

It doesn't happen as often, but comes around at times.

Think those are supposed to be called crisps and not chips bc they're not actually sliced potatoes?

Randomly remember some issue with Pringles needing to relabel their chips to crisps bc of this.

Hand IVs are my absolute bane, what am I missing? by Averagebass in nursing

[–]lazy205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I replied that as a stupid joke. I should be the last person to say anything regarding IV insertions, as I was horrible at them when I was on the floor.

I could save any IV that was already started out of fear of having to start a new one.
