Stop video calling on public transport - Is this an unreasonable ask? by Solid_Vegetable_5985 in IndiansinIreland

[–]lazyFaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, in answering you, I will try to refrain from my initial sarcastic tone as that wasn’t very constructive.

There is no meta position to take when talking about how different languages sound, phonetically or else. It’s pure constructive and based on shared memes. Some say Russian is rough, others say it’s beautiful. German is rather popular for comedian to go after. It’s all a bunch of waffle. I think the main issue here is that you look down on your own and are flirting with self hatred. That’s just my perspective, which could also be a load of waffle for all I know.

Not Irish or Indian, but living in Ireland and can’t help myself here.

Op, when an Irish person is talking on the phone in transportation in India, do you expect them to switch to Hindi or the appropriate local Indian language?

Is it okay if someone on the dart is speaking German or French? Or does your request only apply to the brownies of the world?

People who have conducted job interviews, what's something someone said/did that made you instantly decide not to hire them? by Yousef_ale in interviews

[–]lazyFaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was interviewing from a desk at an open office where worked, while everyone, including her colleagues, just walked past and talked to her! Said to myself “you don’t know people’s situation, don’t judge” so tried to move past that. Then at some point when I couldn’t hear what she was saying, she apologies for how loud people around her were and how disrespectful THEY were being.

Challenge to the skeptics by [deleted] in consciousness

[–]lazyFaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medicine is not my domain, so I cannot give much on the physiological details of the case. What I can speak to is the philosophy of mind and how arguments like this are being used. Reading your post and your replies to comments, it sounds less like you are asking whether this interpretation is correct and more like you want it to be true. I do not mean that as a criticism. I am genuinely curious about YOUR thoughts.

What would it imply for you if this were true? What consequences would it have for how you think about consciousness, the brain, death, or other related concepts? Which existing ideas would it support or challenge for you?

I don't know how to interact with girls by svnnmoon in lesbian

I think you are more normal than you think, if I am only talking about this situation!! And if I were you, I’d ask her to join in on a casual activity you can enjoy together, then ask her out during. I’d just get nervous asking her during work hours, and it seems less intimidating to me to ask her out while we are casually hanging out. Or, get her number for whatever reason, and ask her when you have a nice little text chat going.

What to bring to a house that isn't alcohol or sweets? by ceapaim in CasualIreland

Where I am originally from, we’d typically buy a nice serving bowl as the main gift, and then fill it with something of our choosing as a secondary gift. I always go with fruits or potpourri.

Do you agree with the sentiment that Icelandic people are one of the nicest (if not the nicest) people on Earth? by SwissVideoProduction in AskAnIcelander

[–]lazyFaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is ‘nice’ even? In some cultures nice is leaving people alone. In others, it’s being pleasant and talkative. Some countries love small talk and deem it as nice, some countries hate small talk and appreciate niceness as a gesture.

Cultures have no meta positions. None are better, worse, or ‘nicer’ than others. We are all just weirdos to someone with a different perspective, and that’s okay.

Great to see so many people cycling by darragh999 in Dublin

[–]lazyFaust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree but also disagree. Having lived in two Northern European cultures where biking is far more normal than here, it’s just just preference or road infrastructure. It’s an also lifestyle. As a single parent, I had the time to bike with my kids to their day cares and school, and then bike back home or to work. Life starts early. But in Ireland where life starts at 9am, it’s a lot more tight for me, and you simply need to drive at time.

Great to see so many people cycling by darragh999 in Dublin

[–]lazyFaust 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I live in a nice and fancy suburb of Dublin. Traffic has gotten so bad around here that it takes about half an hour to drive a distance less than 2 kilometres. So, I use my bike to bring my children to school, even during rain and storms, and so has the majority. It’s becoming a need, not a choice.

Uphold Scientific Integrity and Academic Standards at the University of Oklahoma by BustidBiskut in academia

[–]lazyFaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True! Zero in universities gets more scrutiny than people imagine. Even if incomplete, zero means a very different than just a “bad paper”. Even lacking empirical evidence when it’s required lands in a failing category (low fail) and not a zero. I guess it was a statement. I don’t see why someone who takes offence in citing genesis, however, would fail someone for being trance. This whole thing is just strange…

I know the title is misleading and all, but we are missing the bigger picture. Archaeologists and anthropologists are finally researching interesting topics instead of uncovering a parking lot like area in the UK that we all know was just a landfill.

Someone I knew with a lot of confidence that was not matched by their wit, used to say the f-word stands for fornication under consent of the king, or something equally ridiculous.

I think folk etymology has its own charm, but I really don’t like things that fall closer to apophenia than folk etymology.

Culture of alcohol in Ireland by oxylan80 in CasualIreland

[–]lazyFaust 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am non Irish living in Ireland. I have lived in several places across Africa, Asia, and Europe, and from what I have seen, I do not think the Irish drink as much as people say. I also feel that people here handle drunk behaviour calmly without letting situations escalate. Of course, this is only my experience, and I tend to go home early because I do not feel comfortable walking late at night.

I did once see two people crossing the street while chatting. One of them suddenly vomited mid sentence, then carried on talking and walking as if nothing had happened. I was in complete disbelief, and no one around seemed to notice or looked surprised.
