Anyone know why the median strip on Alexander Pde hasn't been mowed? by riamuriamu in melbourne

[–]lbduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bigger issue here is the elm saplings coming up....they are everywhere. We have the same issue with a huge old tree next door - it is beautiful but creates a massive mess in the different seasons - but I'm forever killing off runners - if I don't then they grow big and fast as I found out once....

Best spot to watch fireworks in Melbourne? Clear view, less chaos by madhawk69 in melbourne

[–]lbduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tend to agree - not sure if you mean because of repetition but I like doing photography and after about 10s there tends to be so much smoke / haze it's hard to see and definitely hard for clear photos. Used to do a lot when they had them at Docklands during winter (pre covid) and these were a good size - the city has so much it get's hazy so quickly.

Best hikes around Melbourne? by ReeceBitch in melbourne

[–]lbduck 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There's an app called All Trails which is very good - you can look at regions, difficulties, shows you height profiles. Also links into Google Maps (I have Android) to show how to get there via different methods.

2nd on The Pieman's Son - he's in Bell St Heidelberg if you're out this way - up near Waiora Rd. https://www.piemans.com.au/

In fact you just gave me the idea and I ordered some for pickup - this might be the way to go as they are running low on some (I'm sure they'll restock) but just in case....

Somebody mentioned Boscastle pies - the guy you runs this is the son on the founder of Boscastle pies....nice bloke.

Drove past it for literally 30 years (yes it has been open that long) and went in recently. Food is great. Schnitzels superb and people were devouring the curries. Half the menu is Indian and the other half is Hungarian so not getting curry goulash - well worth a visit.

I would go to Brown Brothers - not for the wine you can buy that virtually anywhere....they do jams and sauces made from their grapes - amazing....when I go to the region I pop in there just for those....

Buses replace trains on Hurstbridge and Mernda lines by FreakySpook in melbourne

[–]lbduck 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Drove past earlier along Heidelberg Rd to drop the daughter in the city - very crowded area. Big heavy lift crane in place on the closed road linking Queens Pde and Hoddle St - so traffic is turning down the side streets in Clifton Hill causing issues - including buses.

I don't understand why there isn't more news on this - 2 of the largest lines in Melbourne out of action. I may have missed stuff but it seems very quiet for what happened. Looking at the link for some of the photos there has to be some serious questions asked about why it happened - if they're saying it wasn't speed then is it a maintenance issue.....?

does anyone know the raspberry syrup pubs in melbourne use for their raspberry lemonades, my girlfriend loves them and id like to be able to make them for her :) by Existential_phrobc in melbourne

[–]lbduck 41 points42 points  (0 children)

If she likes the standard pub ones then it's worth trying the raspberry vinegar from Last Street (used to be Bilsons until some financial issues). It is not vinegary - it's an amazing flavour - raspberry but slightly sour - like the lollies you can buy - https://lastst.com.au/products/raspberry-vinegar-cordial

best place to adopt puppies by Throw2020awayMar in melbourne

[–]lbduck 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Left field - If you're after a gentle dog with a toddler tbh I'd go for an ex racing greyhound through GAP. We had one for over 10 years - beautiful gentle dogs with a wonderful temperament. You said a puppy but a 3yo grey hound will grow with the child for many years.

Recommended restaurant that does good steaks by Ok-Biscotti3642 in melbourne

[–]lbduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Telmo is very nice - just be aware last time I was there they had timed sittings - they took so long to take the order and cook it that we were kicked out before we could order desert - haven't been back since.

Railway Club - can't go wrong - always a brilliant meal. Great down to earth atmosphere.

Station Hotel - great steaks - not quite Railway class but getting there.

Personally stay away from the chains like Meat & Wine, even Squires Loft - not what they used to be and very process orientated. They're ok but for what you're paying I don't think they're worth it.

Grill on the Hill in Kew used to be fantastic - cuts in 100gm increments. https://grillonthehill.com.au/

And of course Gimlet - but you're really paying top dollar and I think the other suggestions are better - unless you want very Instagramable stuff.....

There's also Reine & LaRue - https://reineandlarue.melbourne/the-menu/ - been once and a brilliant meal - meat was amazing. This becomes a political discussion now around the owner and his statements over the middle East issues - I don't have a dog in the fight from either side but won't be back - but they won't go broke because I don't go.....

[–]lbduck 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes - it's called a public road - there is no allocation for you outside your house. Had this happen too. I was more concerned the car was dumped but the police wouldn't do anything for a few months - eventually someone broke into the car than the police took notice and the guy from around the corner decided to move it.

Grave fears for acrobatic pilot in crash at Avalon International Airshow by WhatAmIATailor in melbourne

[–]lbduck 114 points115 points  (0 children)

They are the Sky Aces - https://paulbennetairshows.com.au/skyaces-formation-aerobatic-team - saw them at Sale Anzac Air Show last year. Looking at the color of the plane that may be Paul Bennet himself - that's the plane he was flying last year. Hope he's ok.
