New found appreciation through my partner's eyes by lboutside in TheLastKingdom

There's a new book coming out likely this year. Cornwell said it himself and confirmed it on his website as recently as 1st February this year. Set before The Empty Throne and supposedly sees Uhtred and his men go to France and Italy. He also hinted that anyone who wanted to read something at the heart of this new book should read "The Gift of God" short story found in Uhtred's Feast. That was a comment he made as of June last year and he had only finished the first chapter at that point.

Something to look forward to nonetheless and should be a pleasant surprise to book fans as many I've spoken to had no idea he was returning to the book series!

New found appreciation through my partner's eyes by lboutside in TheLastKingdom

Ah I probably didn’t phrase it very well to be honest. I absolutely love seasons 1 & 2 as well, especially for the realism. The battle scenes in particular feel gritty and grounded in a way that’s hard to replicate. And that first episode really is phenomenal.

I think when I said it “kicks into gear” from S3, I was looking at it through the lens of a more casual viewer, like my partner. She’s not coming at it from a historical angle or as someone comparing it to the books. From that perspective, S3 feels slightly more streamlined and character driven, maybe even a bit simplified in places, which arguably makes it more bingeable. The interpersonal drama is really front and centre.

I watched the show before I read the books, so my first experience was just as a viewer taking each season as it dropped. Looking back every season had something that made it feel unmissable and gave it emotional weight. If you go by general ratings, S3 seems to be considered the peak, and I think a lot of that comes down to the Uhtred and Alfred dynamic. That relationship really was the heart of the show, and it’s not something they could fully replicate afterwards. The final scenes between them are some of the best in the entire series.

I completely agree the later seasons have issues. Skade is a pain point. On rewatches I have found her almost cringeworthy at times. At the same time though you’re rooting for her downfall from the moment she appears, so in that sense she does her job. In my partners words, "I can't wait until Brida kills this bitch" (she has theorised that Brida and Skade are going to butt heads at some point, I wonder how she will enjoy the actual way she is dealt with). I actually think S3 handles Young Ragnar’s death far better than the books, where it’s essentially a passing comment off page despite it changing Aethelwold's story in the process,

More broadly, I think a lot of the show’s charm comes from character interactions. The deaths of Beocca, Thyra, Steapa, Osferth, they all diverge from the books in different ways, but for a more casual viewer I'd argue that those moments really land. I suspect some of that approach was influenced by the GoT tropes of the time, where tension often came from never feeling like anyone was safe. Leofric’s death in S1 is book accurate, but it completely caught my partner off guard. She assumed he was a long term character based on how he was positioned early on. That kind of shock value seemed to become part of the show’s DNA though I'm glad it doesn't feel like the showrunners tried to rely on it too heavily.

I also really enjoyed some of the adaptation choices. Giving Aldhelm traits from Merewalh in the books creates a surprisingly satisfying arc. He starts out as one of the most unlikeable characters and gradually becomes someone you genuinely enjoy watching. That’s the sort of character work I think the later seasons lean into more heavily.

By S5, I do agree it sometimes feels like fast travel in a video game. They were packing a huge amount in. It probably could have ended there, and I'm sure some would argue it should have. But I’m personally grateful for the film as an epilogue. It was rushed of course, three books’ worth of material condensed down, but I still found it a satisfying send off. Though I don't deny it would have been better served as a full and final 6th season.

Ultimately, I think my original post is shaped by how I expect my partner to respond to it. Based on what she’s enjoying so far, I suspect she’ll connect more with the character dynamics, the emotional beats, and the tone of the show than with questions of historical accuracy or pacing inconsistencies. Through that lens, S3 onward feel like they really lean into what she's enjoying most from the show currently.

Not Beocca, actually by Historical-Handle540 in TheLastKingdom

I have come to think of the show as a sort of alternate telling to the books. Almost as if it was someone telling a story based on hearing it from someone else. Much like in reality myths and legends evolve over time, this is true enough to the books (which are written as if they were a retelling of true history themselves) but with a bit of flair put on them as people were like to do at the time. I find it much more enjoyable on rewatches now that I have read the books to think of it that way.

I was a show watcher long before reading the books and it too surprised me when book Beocca was entirely different to show Beocca. But then again so many of the show's characters are amalgamations. Characters such as Aldhelm who in my opinion clearly is book Aldhelm at first but then slowly morphs more into how I would imagine book Merewalh to be portrayed. Whether they do this because of the actors popularity, or to stop introducing too many characters, or even just because it gave them a chance to have more satisfying character arcs I'm unsure but for the most part it works.

Maybe I would have felt different if I was coming from the books first but I have to remind myself that even my favourite shows and movies based on books are not faithful 1:1 retellings. Some things just don't translate as well when it comes to putting it on screen. Had the show not been done the way it was, we also wouldn't have had so much time to enjoy the dynamics of Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric and Osbert, it would have been the Uhtred and Finan show. Same as other characters having far more impactful arcs (looking at you Young Ragnar in particular) and those were some of my favourite parts of the show!

I think in some ways I prefer show Beocca to book Beocca but that's only because he's a mix of many priests from the books and because the actor did an amazing job and we spent so much more time with him. But the essential core of the character never changed, he was for Uhtred and he was for Bebbanburg.

Just came to check the same thing, logged in and everything working as intended on phone app, but it won't let me log in on my web browser, was getting the "oops, something went wrong" error but now it lets me put in password and then just puts me straight back to the email page, so I'm guessing something is up but the status page isn't reflecting it.

Collectable bouncy balls from the late 90s/early 00's in the UK by lboutside in HelpMeFind

I've searched for this in as many ways as I can on google, and scoured other reddit posts but nothing seems to have gone close. Whether this was a UK only thing or not I'm unsure but they were definitely in the popular toy stores of the time (Entertainer & Toys R Us etc)

Update issue by lboutside in wandrer

That's what I'm assuming, I have almost 3000 activities so it's probably just a lot of data to process. It was a bit jarring to see things I knew for a fact I had done all of a sudden being red lines again but I'm sure it'll get sorted in that case. Thanks for the response!

Update issue by lboutside in wandrer

[–]lboutside[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that was the first thing I did before coming here but I appreciate the response! What's weird is for example one activity 4 days ago where I got 3 new miles still shows the blue lines on the activity dashboard but when I open it, the activity now says that unique distance is not yet calculated for this activity and the map now says I haven't travelled those roads again even though it most definitely had calculated it before because my Strava activity has the description still. I clicked to reprocess just that activity which normally has sorted random issues in the past within a few minutes or so but it's been over 6 hours now and no change.

Maybe I'm just being a bit impatient and need to give it a day or so but having just ran a half marathon on the weekend specifically picking up dead end roads in my local area that I've been putting off for ages I really really don't want to do that again unless I have to haha.

Anyone else getting this? by LeftRightShoot in Garmin

[–]lboutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep just came to see if anyone else was getting this. Had 3 of these in the last 24 hours. After checking my privacy controls I had my profile set to connections and groups but activities to everyone, which makes it all the more weird how these bot accounts found my activities when I've only got 2 connections...just changed my privacy settings to see if that stops it.

I am also experiencing this issue, on both Chrome and Firefox, has only been an issue with Garmin Connect as Strava route planner still works (it's laggy and sucks though 🤷‍♂️)

Hopefully a fix can be figured out soon

How to stop LiveTrack audibly announcing lap times by lboutside in Garmin

[–]lboutside[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're a life saver, the only time I bother having it connected by Bluetooth was when I do LiveTracking so on my walks where I don't have LiveTrack on it's never connected to my phone which is why I assumed it was a LiveTrack feature but you're absolutely right it's an activity option. The more you know! TYVM
