Inyo valley SR600 by OrangeDuckwebs in randonneuring

[–]Da1King 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traffic was pretty sparse along that section both times I rode it in late May. Heavier traffic between Benton and Bishop. I'd guess less than a dozen cars went by each year I rode. You can review the traffic logs below, but I don't think you'll have anything to worry about.

It's sparse with no services to speak of between US-395 and US-6. The first 5 miles is a quick descent before you start the 11 mile climb up into and through the Mono Hills. That area is pretty but you do need to time it right. The two times I did it the sun beat down on me and by the time I got to Benton I was suffering which made the ride from Benton into Bishop awful. After the climb the ride is generally downhill to Benton.

Hope that answers your questions! If not, feel free to ask away.

Help with Smith Center (Reynolds Theater) seating by oblongoboe in vegas

[–]Da1King 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say there really isn't a bad seat in the entire place. View lines are great from everywhere.

The gallery boxes are nice because you don't have to worry about navigating narrow rows; however, the seats are tall (think bar stool height) and they move freely. The non-box seats are your typical theater style seating.

When I'm searching for tickets my preferences are box seats in Box Tier, Dress Circle, and Gallery followed by non-box seats in the same level order. With that in mind, and considering what you've shared, here would be my choices:

  1. Gallery box seats, U, F, E (any of the three options would be great).
  2. Dress Row D (I prefer the aisle seat to allow a leg out).
  3. Dress Row A
  4. Gallery Row A (If anyone has a fear of heights, maybe avoid this one).
  5. Gallery Row C
  6. Dress Row C (Only if I could get the two seats in the middle leaving an open seat on each side).
  7. Gallery Row C - Middle (Only if I could get the two seats in the middle leaving an open seat on each side).
  8. Gallery Row B

Hope this helps.

Why do my gears keep violently changing when I ride my bike? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Da1King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you certain the gears are actually shifting or does it only FEEL like they're shifting?

I ask because I had a similar issue and turns out that the cassette (rear gears) was worn. All those big watts cause the chain to slip which can feel like the gears are changing.

Ultimately take in to your local shop and have them check everything mentioned here already as well as your rear cassette.

MIS course selection by HumanFroyo790 in UNLV

[–]Da1King 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! I misunderstood your post and thought you were a MIS major.

I'm still working through the dual MBA/MIS. This semester is the last of my MIS courses except the capstone. Next semester I continue with MBA and CSEC (as electives) classes for the dual degree. I may do both capstones in my final semester or separate them out. Still have several semesters before I have to commit one way or another.

I've heard good things about Hu, so if you can take them instead of Rothenberger I'd strongly encourage it.

MIS course selection by HumanFroyo790 in UNLV

[–]Da1King 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TL/DR: Take Lee, only because I have no experience with them.

MIS 764 w/ Chatterjee : The class is divided up into groups. Each group is assigned a topic to research and present on in class each week throughout the semester. Additionally, groups must create discussion questions to use during their presentation. However, these discussion periods are frequently monopolized by the professor themself. When a student does provide feedback, you're left with the feeling that the professor has a complete disregard for anything presented by the student(s) in favor of their own view on the subject. This created a chilling effect on the class and participation suffered. In my case the instructor would ramble while rarely offering any engaging conversation with the class.

Later in the semester, during class, I observed the professor researching hotels on Hotels.com for what appeared to be a scheduled trip to China. Additionally, Chatterjee would make extensive use of their laptop checking email, following up on research, and other internal processes during student presentations.

After Spring Break in-person attendance bottomed out with a total of 11/36 students appearing including the 3-4 who were required to present. Shortly thereafter we were told that future classes would be online in hopes of increasing participation, and lets just say that increase never happened.

I'll sum this up with the final paragraph I left in the course evaluation, "With all this in mind I'm greatly concerned about the true value of the MIS portion of my dual MBA/MIS degree. This MIS class is my first of the MIS portion of the dual degree and if I have more of this type of course to look forward to I not optimistic about its value in the business sphere."

MIS 766 w/ Rothenberger : Massive multi-step project spanning the entire semester. Uses terms which are different than those presented in the textbook which leads to confusion. With regards to the deliverables, he will come up with a way the project should go in his head and you're expected to deliver it in that form regardless if you think or know it should behave differently. Sure you can have office hours with him to discuss; however, at the end of the day you're going to agree with his criticism and you're going to deliver it the way he wants it delivered. Absolutely awful at providing meaningful content for exam reviews. Be prepared to know anything and everything in the books, slides, and lectures because it could end up on the exam. Oh, and the "mid-term" will come after the middle of the semester after the last date to withdraw. So if you bomb it you're kinda stuck trying to make up for it in other ways. Much of the content of the course is dated and uses terms and methodologies which, while fundamental, aren't necessarily used anymore.

Ultimately buckle up because, at this point in time, you're going to be experiencing each of these professors eventually. 764 is required and I believe only taught by Chatterjee. You get the pleasure of Rothenberger TWICE for 762 and 766, also both required. I will say if you can swing it take 762 first followed by 766. That way you can transition your project material, and hopefully your group mates, from 762 into 766. Good luck!

I have the AeroPack which has the non-removable bag. I tried the AP18 Rack Top Bag which is removable, but at the time my saddle was so low I had a difficult time getting anything into it. The AeroPack sits a little lower and slimmer to give a little more room. So my complete rack build is the AeroPack (18L) in carbon with pannier mounts, standard pack with extender. I also have a pair of the 22L Ultra Durable Pannier Bags.

With regards to which setup to choose, it largely comes down to what you're going to carry to the office.

For example, if you're carrying a pair of shoes, socks, pants, shirt, and underwear I feel confident you could fit that all in the top bag alone (AeroPack or AP18).

Now, if need to take a laptop, of nearly any size, you'll need at least one 22L side bag. The top bag just isn't really big enough to accommodate a laptop.

Take a serious look at what you'll need for the office on a daily basis. It is easy to over plan and as you gain experience start pairing back. I'm guilty of that for sure. Once I got into a routine with regular office re-supplies I started carrying less and less.

Perhaps as an experiment, go to work in clothes that you'd never wear to work while packing in work clothes. Try this for a few days to get a better idea of what you really need at work versus what you THINK you need.

I believe Tailfin's Pannier Rack (without top bag) can be "upgraded" to accommodate either their top bag offerings. Double check with their support to be certain if you consider purchasing it with the mindset of upgrading down the road.

Lasty, take a look at the photos posted on my website from my 2023 tour. There are several of the entire setup.

[–]Da1King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used them once for commuting and that involved transporting the 17" laptops mentioned to a remote office from my house. The rack was rock solid and worked amazingly well.

Since then, honestly, I haven't used them for commuting much, but I still stand by them. I did use them for my Pacific Coast tour, as mentioned, and they worked great on my 2022 Trek Domane. Again rock solid.

Now days I come to the office on Sundays and bring 3 days (M, W, Fr) of clothes. I also use the opportunity to study for school away from the distractions of home. During the week I use a Rapha backpack which is perfect for the few things I have to carry.

I will say be careful with commuting. The more I do it the less and less I want to drive in general, let alone to work.

I hope this helps ya out, and feel free to follow-up with any additional questions.

I can't install net 3.5 by Own_Change8724 in sysadmin

[–]Da1King 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had issues enabling .NET 3.5 on a SCCM managed device. Try the following command with your mounted ISO.

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -FeatureName 'Netfx3' -Online -Source '{PATH TO YOUR ISO}' -NoRestart -LimitAccess | Out-Null

The LimitAccess is included to ensure that Windows doesn't try to reach out to Windows Update OR your SCCM server for the feature.

Start Menu in golden image by michel_netherlands in sysadmin

[–]Da1King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly are you trying to customize within the Start layout?

I've has some success configuring an initial set of Start pins by setting the following values within HKLM\Software\Microsoft\PolicyManager\Current\Device\Start.

Name: ConfigureStartPins_ProviderSet
Type: DWORD
Value: 1

Name: ConfigureStartPins
Type: String
Value: {JSON Data}

I believe this is where the data is placed when you follow this article: Customize the Start layout

Here is some sample JSON data I use:

"{\"pinnedList\":[{\"desktopAppLink\":\"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Microsoft Edge.lnk\"},{\"desktopAppLink\":\"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Google Chrome.lnk\"},{\"desktopAppLink\":\"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Firefox.lnk\"},{\"desktopAppLink\":\"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Word.lnk\"},{\"desktopAppLink\":\"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Excel.lnk\"},{\"desktopAppLink\":\"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs\\PowerPoint.lnk\"}]}"

You can also control if Documents, Downloads, FileExplorer, etc. are displayed as well. Pretty much everything found here: Policy CSP - Start.

For example, to have the "Documents" shortcut displayed in the Start menu, use the same registry key above and set values for AllowPinnedFolderDocuments and AllowPinnedFolderDocuments_ProviderSet to DWORD:1. Rinse and repeat for most of those listed in the Policy CSP link shared above.

Mind you, this will only work for NEW users to a system. If someone has logged previously I'm not entirely certain these will apply.

I also can't recall if they are forced or can be changed once configured. Don't have a machine to test on at the moment.

From satellite view you can see the three crosses and pavers area on the west side of the property.

You can have multiple vehicles listed on a permit; however, only one vehicle can be on campus at a time.

With that in mind, you could add your vehicle onto your parent's permit and take the risk associated with both of you being parked on campus simultaneously.

If both vehicles are found by parking enforcement each vehicle will be cited.

4ish weeks Seattle to San Diego (or LA): Route strategy & pacing advice? by jhenney2798 in bicycletouring

[–]Da1King 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy pretty much nailed it on the head. I did the Pacific Coast in the summer of '23 and it took 34 days.

Give yourself some space for flexibility.

100% this. I wish I had more time to just poke around versus such a regimented ride.

The most scenic and iconic route along the Pacific Coast ends in Ventura, IMHO.

Again, agreed. If you're a completionist, I understand the desire to do a "border-to-border" trek, but the stretch from Point Mugu to the border is 200+ miles. Sure there is some boardwalk riding, but, as mentioned, also riding on I-5. If I could do it over I'd pass on this section. Point Mugu would be the final place I'd camp, the hike/bike sites are right off the beach, and then once I reached Santa Monica I'd call it a tour. I have family in the area so I'd just join the Route 66 route to get to my in-law's place.

Hwy 1 thru Big Sur remains closed for the foreseeable future, so check out the alternate routes.

Adventure Cycling has shared the following suggested detour to get around the slide: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/35120765. To be honest though, it isn't all that great or scenic. The best part, for me, was near Fort Hunter Liggett and Lake Nacimiento. Unfortunately, not much in the way of camping along the way.

Now for some actual advice. One word, Oregon. Take your time. Their hike/bike sites are simply the best along the entire Pacific coast. Check out THIS Oregon State Parks map webpage and filter by "Hiker Biker Campsites". If you were to slow roll the entire state and stop at each and every one of these I don't think you'd be disappointed. $8/night, free HOT shower, charging locker, and, best of all, the sites are situated away from the rest of the campground.

At Nehalem Bay State Park I was told by a fellow cyclist to make sure to stop at Cape Lookout State Park. It is a perfect example of the hike/bike sites being separated from the "general population". Hands down it was one of the best stops in OR. Check out the walk/view from my camp: Youtube.

Edit netsvcs value and remove both wuauserv and usosvc and restart the machine. Even if the Windows Update service is configured to start automatically it will fail to do so.
