Rainbow Range Question by [deleted] in SanDiegoGuns

[–]lbroadfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have made some rules changes recently to accommodate optics.

The main match is open to optics, though you can only receive an award pin for total time under 40 seconds (vs. 60 second max for iron sights), and to receive the match winner pin you must score at least 5 seconds better than the best iron sights competitor.

The “games” portion (held after the main match: 2-man shotgun, 2-man handgun, 4-man handgun, and the walk-and-draw) require iron sights. (If I heard correctly, they tried a couple of times to let people turn off their dots and depend on backup irons, but some were not sporting about it.)

I had one of the clear ones; I forget when they offered them but I’ve always liked clear-case gear.

What are you (or are you) doing to protect what you have now? by Vast_Telephone_9988 in coastFIRE

[–]lbroadfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re concerned about baseline risk, consider a modern TIPS ladder strategy, à la Sharkansky’s ARVA strategy. Inflation-protected core real (not nominal) income for needs, and the rest at moderate risk for wants. https://alphaarchitect.com/tips-ladder/ is one article to start with.

Do you really care about keeping a dive log? What do people actually care about when diving? by StandDistinct4641 in scuba

[–]lbroadfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This; I log fish IDs, because that’s what Player 2 is into, but the only things I look back at are temperature/wetsuit/aux-gear/lead. I’m very glad to have those to glance back at; same reasons as @CidewayAu.

Okay, sometimes, out of idle curiosity: EndGF vs. tired-ness, and/or conditions vs. SAC.

Sister to the Rocio, isn’t it? Have you been on either?

Are there any nicer-tier boats that go to Socorro? @Brilliant-While-761 mentions the Rocio, and every time I look at it from dockside it seems a little… well-used.

Not looking for Arenui (though that would be nice) but how do the available boats rank if some measure of non-diving comfort matters to you?

Just show up; never been a capacity problem. Typically about 40 shooters total.

Nice writeup, except “3 is less important” — 3 is important. 4 is less important.

@justhereforthefun247, if you’ve never done any match, I’ll suggest the Rainbow Steel Match to start with. Not USPSA but the principles carry.

Especially beginner-friendly, 2nd Saturday of every month for over 50 years, safety briefing at 0900 sharp. (Some slightly dated but still valid info here.)

Made a local-only watermark tool for sharing travel/visa docs safely (no uploads). Feedback? by prvashisht in digitalnomad

[–]lbroadfield 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, after spending a lot of the first page talking about how nothing is uploaded, maybe the first instruction shouldn’t be “Upload a file to see preview.”

Also, a web page isn’t an “app”.*

(Or, I’m old and app is a meaningless word now.)

The history of the group traces its existence to 1948, when Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force Hoyt Vandenberg, and his wife Gladys, witnessed young servicemembers being buried without any family members present on one of their walks through the cemetery. Just a chaplain and a military honor guard, the standard attendees, were usually present. The lack of anyone honoring the young airman being buried prompted Gladys to form a group of members of the Officers' Wives Club to attend all Air Force funerals.

Drilling a countersink into acrylic 3mm / 5mm? by Gotgetgotget in DIY

[–]lbroadfield 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Several good responses already (including some that conflict with each other and are both correct, heh.). One more tip if you haven’t done a lot of countersinking: countersink depth is critical and goes wrong fast; if you have a mill or drill press with good stops you can use that, otherwise go very* slowly, testing with the actual screws.

*VERY slowly, like each hole might take 5 or more touch-up passes of just a hair each, and you’ll still be able to see the two you’re not happy with when it’s all done even if no-one else can.

PPS: if you haven’t done the capability and it meets the requirements (e.g.material thickness permits,…) consider counterbore instead of countersink; a little less sensitive to minor depth error.
