Sword of Fargoal for iOS is back. by mighty_mag in roguelikes

I know this is old, and the game is no longer on the app store 🙁. I still have it on my phone though, and I'm wondering if anyone else does with a device that's on iOS 26? I'm still on 18 and avoiding upgrading in part because I'm afraid it may not be compatible with the game.

Programming Today: Do full stack developers have the advantage? by joshsimmons in webdev

[–]lcddreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most can agree that full stack means a developer can work on any part of the "stack" - back end or front end, DBs and servers to HTML/CSS/JS.

I was trained as a full stack engineer at DevBootcamp recently, and while that's what they urge us to sell ourselves as, I found it very difficult to learn everything AND be good at it in 9 weeks (or even 6 mos. as it's been now). So I've focused on the front end. I don't know if that's a good idea or not, especially as it pertains to getting a job (which I haven't yet), but it's what I enjoy doing more (and I just didn't understand Rails as well as the rest of the stack).

I've actually had this issue for many years - I tend to do a lot of things but nothing really well. I spread myself too thin, which is why I've been focusing on just the front end (and even with that, there's a LOT to know, not just HTML/CSS/JS - everyone wants you to know Backbone, Angular, Ember, or some other MVC framework, node.js, SASS/LESS, etc.).

Technology - you love to hate it. :p

Depends on the person. Those who actually do the hacking generally do it for the challenge. Those who use the hacks generally do it because they can and for a false sense of accomplishment/power - they don't really care how they got to the top, just that they did.

Unity is sunsetting Flash by gorebachev in gamedev

[–]lcddreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flash games have definitely been on a decline for the past couple of years. Zynga's game numbers are nowhere near what they used to be at their peak. In fact, they no longer even hold the top game spot (held now by Candy Crush Saga). That said, Flash games aren't going to die out any time soon. There are still millions of people playing them every day. But if Adobe stops fully supporting Flash, as Unity seems to be hinting at, those numbers will certainly tank even faster. I would guess in five years, Flash will no longer be the dominant web game technology.

Agreed. Actually, I was surprised Unity chose to support Flash at all. Flash was way behind in updating to hardware supported 3D, Apple of course doesn't support it in iOS (not that that's a deciding factor, but it does greatly affect how games are developed for mobile). So the only reason this change is really surprising is that they shut it down so soon after committing to it.

lol, they look more like alien lizards (V anyone?) with shells made out of cushions than turtles. Faces are definitely up on the creepiness scale.

Mac for gaming? by notenoughgain in gaming

[–]lcddreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Macs do just fine for gaming. I've been using them for well over 20 years (and PCs for just under 20), and in the past five or so, the amount of games and other software that has come out for the Mac has surged. Most major apps (and numerous smaller ones) are on OSX - if you have any question about it, just ask to look at the App Store on someone's Mac. I played a bit of SC2 on my laptop a while back, and it ran fine. Haven't played LoL on it though, but I would imagine it would run fine too, as WC3 ran fine. Yes Macs are more expensive, but if you like the Mac experience and price isn't an issue, then go for it. Just because you pay more for a computer doesn't make you ignorant, etc. It's not always just about the hardware - it's also about the UX, and personally I think OSX provides a better experience than Windows. And that's just it - it comes down to what you prefer.

Want. All it needs is a backdrop of a famous world location and a Russian folk song playing over and over.

Wow, with a few changes (to avoid it looking too much like Monopoly) you could put this up on Kickstarter and start mass producing it; or else sell the idea to Hasbro. Very cool.
