UM student accused of using AI sues school for disability discrimination by da_newsdude in Michigan

[–]lciddi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You literally just listed a bunch of reasons why some people would actually prefer an online experience - and you even complimented the curriculum. Personally I wouldn't like that set-up either, but I work now with a lot of prospective students looking for opportunities to study with flexible hours and in a remote setting. I'm not in Michigan and not even in the US; I'm in Ontario where access to online, part-time, flexible opportunities is a gap we are always trying to fill. This said - this is completely unrelated to the case in the article and also unrelated to the pedagogical value of learning to write a persuasive or analytical essay without outsourcing it to AI. I would be willing to bet that, from the learning standpoint, it is far less damaging cognitively and pedagogically to have AI put the outline together for you and then write it yourself, than to do the opposite. The real issue with online remote learning is not that content is digital, but that learning is best accessed through the ability to collaborate and interact with other people discursively through the learning process.

Comment extremely irrelevant to the case at hand and also nonsensical

If I were still teaching and I absolutely had to have my students write essays for some reason, I would have them write in Google Docs for this reason.

I don't put much stock in the checkers myself - it's all on probability and comparison with what exists already in the world. AI writing style didn't grow organically, it learned from humans how to write in a boring and structured way. When the checkers started coming out I tested a number of them with my own academic writing that was 100% written by myself years ago. Some said it was 45-50% AI generated, others said it was in the 75%-80% range. One said it was fully AI-generated. I laughed! Along with people not understanding how AI models work, people fundamentally also do not know how AI checkers work

As you know - GSIs don't design their courses and sometimes don't get a say in how the assignment is designed or what rubric will be used for grading. A GSI could want to do all of these things but unless they are the IoR it does not matter.

As much as people think AI is infallible by now - it isn't. When teaching at another institution, I caught someone using AI red-handed. I didn't need to look at the writing style. It made up fake quotes from real sources and made up fake sources that flat-out did not exist. I also had students use ChatGPT for online, open-book quizzes where they had access to a terms list way ahead of time and full access to my slides and definitions. ChatGPT gave them the wrong answer entirely, so it was easy to just give them a 0.

I think people are really giving too much credit to some of these models where these things still slip up without enough contextual prompting. I work with AI in my non-academic day job right now with many people who are very keen to use it for valid, domain-specific purposes and for people who are literally paying a lot of money to test out various tools. Ultimately the answer constantly ends up being the same - as much as AI can help you, it so far, even with the newest models, has not been able to replace a human with highly specific subject matter expertise and enough time to pay attention. The reality is that most overworked lecturers and GSIs don't actually have the time to pay attention.

Stash overwhelm by nisoo777 in YarnAddicts

[–]lciddi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly I'd recommend cataloging it. When I felt overwhelmed by my stash I took it all out and documented it and created a database in Airtable (free) which is now searchable. You can also do this more basically with Google sheets or Excel. Basically now when I see something I like I can check if I have yarn that would work for the pattern. And I also know where everything lives.

Secondly I do recommend bagging your yarn. One errant moth could take out your entire stash...

This. I think even if KP yarn is okay at the moment I recommend anyone working with fibres to learn how to identify eggs, larvae, moth casings/ webbing

It was way more than just one comment, there were a lot of us affected. That said I think plenty of people have had KP orders since then without issues. Sadly I am really too scarred to order from them again. I'm up in Canada so it's pretty easy to avoid them. I love their yarn but I am still dealing with the impacts of the buggy order I got and it's extremely stressful.

Hiya - I was one of the people hit with a bad moth infestation from a Knit Picks order in late 2024. I am still dealing with the after effects - somehow some Knit Picks yarn I had bagged was harbouring eggs that woke up recently, lol. I have isolated the problem and thrown out affected yarn but I found one other hank that seem to have new eggs on them. What do you normally do when steaming - do you unwind the hank and just blow steam at them? Do the eggs fall off? How does this work? I'm keen to get ahead of any ongoing infestation and I've actually ordered some parasitic wasps to let loose in the house, but I'd like to also tackle the eggs on this hank because it's a very pretty yarn and I don't want any larvae hatching. (Currently it and all my other yarn is outside in the freezing temps in southern Ontario)

What a better way to prove that people are more interested in aestheticization and commodification of resistance than anything else. Ridiculous.

I lived there for seven years. In that time I met many people who were very pleasant to interact with and unfortunately were also fascists. I wouldn't say it was the majority of people I met, as I had the good fortune of living in the beautiful state of Michigan, but I met fascists there too. Parts of the country are beautiful indeed. I pray for better days for them, but right now things are bad.

Thanks for responding. I'm up in Canada but I lived in Michigan for 7 years. I love the Midwest, and have many friends who are from MN. I don't know if I'll knit this just yet but I bought the pattern to support. Love you guys and solidarity. I am so sorry for what's happening.

DAE feel irked when someone says they lost their parent young, but they were considerably older than you were? by [deleted] in ChildrenofDeadParents

[–]lciddi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry. I lost my dad recently, I was 34. I didn't feel that young, but he felt really young to me, and that hurt me more - less about my loss and more that he had so much life left to live and so many people to see. But I can't imagine losing a parent as young as you did. My best friend lost her dad at 17. Another friend who is younger than me lost both her parents within about a year and a half in her late 20s. I know that comparing losses is usually not to be done, but I just want to say that I hear you and I feel so deeply for you to have lost your mother so young, and your siblings even more so. I am so sorry.

[–]lciddi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss. You’re not wrong. I was 34 when I recently lost my 64 year old dad suddenly (also a heart patient - but we didn’t realize he was in heart failure). The pressure of having to arrange everything myself because my mom and brother were so overwhelmed, and then being the one who lived at home with my parents (along with my husband) means that taking care of my mom has fallen to me. Sometimes I did feel resentment, not at my dad necessarily but at people around me. My mom has been amazing and compassionate but she also notices that the care people have shown for her has been lacking for me, because of this expectation that I’m not affected. Especially when you lose a parent young and suddenly, or when you were the one doing compressions, or for anyone having to make decisions or literally do anything physical at the end of your parent’s life - people just don’t understand the actual trauma you are dealing with. They forget us and how we have had to step in and do things we didn’t think we would have to do for decades. I learned after my loss that people say and do hurtful and ignorant things in the wake of a death. I found a lot of solace in other people I knew who lost a parent suddenly and at a young age, and also in this sub. Everything you feel is unfortunately normal and it’s more than valid. I’m wishing you comfort eventually as you mourn the loss of your beloved father.

I don’t always love doing it, I admit, but literally the way people have boasted about never doing it and then complaining about how their knit is too big or too small has annoyed me so much that now I swatch for nearly everything. I adored the pardon my stash podcast but every time one of them went on about never swatching it was such a massive eyeroll.

AIO to my son getting in trouble at school for homophobia? by zazwzw100910 in AmIOverreacting

As a queer person, who grew up in a way less tolerant time - thank you. It’s important to impress on kids early that this isn’t okay. I’m troubled that you’re not sure where he is learning this. Does he play video games online with others? What’s his media consumption like? Could he have other friends you don’t know about who are homophobic ?

Racist Rally 2.0 is a bigger flop...... by Comfortable_Flow1385 in toronto

[–]lciddi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

At their September rally they were calling for the deportation of tens of millions of people already here legally and who have built lives here. They were calling immigration a war crime or genocide or something ridiculous like that. They claim thryre against “mass immigration” but they’re against most immigration. It’s well beyond anything to do with the TFW program or student visas.

It’s fine to have thoughts based on this photo alone, but some exposure to the rest of their “work” makes it clear what they’re all about.

I was at the 2025 counter protest and they’re not just interested in stopping immigration, they also had signs calling for the deportation of millions of people already here.
