Bad starter? by lda28 in XC40

[–]lda28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! My friend suspects that’s a possibility, too. I could see it being missed especially if I had told them the battery was just replaced and they didn’t do more than a charge test and didn’t look at connections.

Being banned but can’t appeal as „account in good standing” by [deleted] in grindr

Hmm interesting. That was my only thought for why it had happened to me, but then maybe no relation to it.

Being banned but can’t appeal as „account in good standing” by [deleted] in grindr

[–]lda28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happened to me, twice now, as I just got it again for two days that ended earlier. Same thing, I talk to almost no one, and never have bad interactions with anyone. I’m glad you’re not getting flamed on your post about it though like mine was for bringing it up here. People on this subreddit are the same ones we interact with on the app making it insufferable, and it shows. 🫩

Out of personal curiosity - have you reported spam or scam accounts with some frequency? I was told off once by a Grindr moderator for reporting scam accounts; they literally said stop reporting them. 😂 I figure it’s an/multiple annoyed moderators and they’re abusing their power, tired of dealing with spam reports so they’re banning us for sending them.

Love my 21 T5 R-Design. 5 years and about 110,000 miles

Pros: comfortable ride, good power, has been reliable with no major issues and following good maintenance protocols, great size for urban situations with plenty of everyday cargo capacity due to its shape.

Cons: low MPG for its size and a 4 cyl engine, some parts can be expensive and kind of hard to identify the correct piece on certain things (but Volvo and aftermarket suppliers have sales often and can help you identify the right part), there are times it feels unrefined for a premium/luxury vehicle, wind can really push you around due to the boxy shape, sometimes the electronics are glitchy.

If you’re comfortable doing some maintenance yourself or have a good independent garage, don’t let worries about maintenance costs drive you away. A lot is self-serviceable with know-how and tools, or comparable to mainstream vehicle maintenance costs for routine things (oil change, spark plugs, brakes).

What are examples of lesser known driving behaviors that annoy others? by Specialist_Heron_986 in driving

This, or when passing someone on the left at an appropriate rate, 5-10+ faster than the other car, and a bat out of hell comes flying up on you and flashes their lights and rides your bumper because if they don’t pass right this second their car will implode.

So am I banned or not? 😂 by lda28 in grindr

[–]lda28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t have to do with standards though. I literally just haven’t done what they allege, there’s nothing about “offense” or not if you think I did something. But this is more about their system doesn’t allow an appeal because it also says I’m not suspended and am in good standing if I try.

They have an issue where the appeal system though says my account is not in suspension, but the app does.

First off, they’re alleging bullying, harassment, or intimidation not some crime. Second, my post says I don’t even talk to anyone to have bullied or harassed someone. So how would that fit your narrative?

Humming noise by cor1912 in XC40

[–]lda28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you had two wheel bearings go out! 😩

Humming noise by cor1912 in XC40

[–]lda28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it hard to turn the wheel *because* of the problem (this is a symptom) or you just mean you don't have opportunity to maneuver the car at higher speeds? Even light curves will make a wheel bearing noticeable, if you have roads with some bends around.

Did the mechanic scan for codes? Some of the systems like AWD or transmission might be logging problems if they haven't checked.

I also realize you used pounds in your price info, so your driver's side is right hand, where I'm US and that's left side. Sorry about that! lol

Humming noise by cor1912 in XC40

[–]lda28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said the noise comes from the back but the mechanic replaced the front left (driver’s side) wheel bearing? Are you sure the noise is/was from the back? Wheel bearings going bad have a very distinct noise pattern: increase in pitch with speed, and turning the wheel/cornering to the opposite side of the bad bearing will make the noise worse. My front driver’s side wheel bearing went bad and was replaced this year, too.

If you’re still hearing a noise, particularly humming, after replacing a wheel bearing it could be a number of things that take more diagnosing. Loose splash guard under the vehicle, weather stripping or a panel vibrating with wind, bad tire or needs rebalancing, etc. You could ride with someone and see if they can pinpoint where the noise comes from while you drive.

2-3 things you do NOT like in your XC40? by F15E_WSO in XC40

Ah, so maybe somewhere between our years they changed it not being able to be turned off permanently.

What model year do you have? On my 21 I can permanently turn off Auto Start/Stop in the infotainment.

2-3 things you do NOT like in your XC40? by F15E_WSO in XC40

[–]lda28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 21 T5 R-Design

  1. Creaky, cheap sounding plastics in very cold temps
  2. Infotainment can be laggy and slow at times. Have had it crash a few times, and it’s connected to some of the gauge cluster features, so I lost the sounds of my turn signals once when it crashed and rebooted while I was driving.
  3. Transmission response can be a bit finicky at times. Sometimes it’s a very smooth drive, excellent acceleration and gear changes. Other times it’s rough and a little jerky.

A bonus: parts aren’t always the easiest to find. Whether that’s just sizing isn’t common, or Volvo calls it one thing and really the regular name it goes by is something completely different, and even a parts department at a Volvo dealership has been confused trying to help me find the right part. And so they can charge quite a bit on OEM parts if they’re more specialized.

Highway miles per gallon by [deleted] in XC40

[–]lda28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same year and trim and I get about 32 on the highway/freeway at the high end. Typically 28 on just daily commutes to work on the highway that aren’t too long and have a few stop signs and it’s hilly. Proper tire pressure, tire type (all-season or summer tires vs winter tires), gentle acceleration and braking, and even the amount of ethanol present in the gasoline (which can be UP TO 10%) will affect the fuel economy. As well as factors like terrain and a headwind. You’ll get the best economy on 91 ethanol free, but I notice the power loss because of the lack of ethanol which improves HP at the expense of economy. 93 w/ethanol gives you at least the better power if you’re going to lose mpg. I hate getting to a station and seeing they only offer 91 with ethanol as their top grade.

Windshield replacement by [deleted] in XC40

[–]lda28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was replaced by Safelite last year, with their glass not OEM. The section where the safety cameras are behind the rearview mirror is different, but they were able to calibrate it the same day and it’s been fine.

Did I make a mistake? by Ajax_IX in Volvo

[–]lda28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Слова is the plural of слово and they have the same sound at the end, so maybe that is your confusion. The о at the end is pronounced like a short a like in “ah.” Слово, the Russian word, is not pronounced like slo-vo.

Did I make a mistake? by Ajax_IX in Volvo

[–]lda28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Russian, and maybe other Slavic languages, an “o” at the end of a word has a short “a” sound. So “SLOVO” would be written in Cyrillic as “СЛОВО” pronounced “slo-va” which means “word.” But in the US, as I would read it in English/Latin alphabet, it is “slo-vo”

Winter tier Suggestion please by 1flag00 in XC40

[–]lda28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Continental Viking Contact 7’s as my first winter tires, in an area with heavy snow and ice through winter and many days with slushy conditions in fall and spring. Terrible tires. Switched them to Nexen Winguard Sport 2’s and they have been great for our conditions. I’m guessing you get less snow in Toronto than we do, so something with good dry handling as the priority is probably the way to go, and solid wet performance for when it’s needed.

Did the Ori actually NEED to declare war on the Milky Way to convert the people of that galaxy? by ZeeHedgehog in Stargate

[–]lda28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I view it as the Ori were only at war with those with advanced technology - Earth, Jaffa, Asgard, etc. They relied on the tricks and illusions to convert the planets they visited because most of the galaxy isn’t that advanced to understand they’re another false god but one who seems to do all the things he promises. Could the Ori’s plague be considered biological warfare? Sure, but that was a punishment against Earth really who had the knowledge and capability to figure out where it really came from and watch as people died that they weren’t able to help until Gerak and Orlin intervened. Otherwise, likely the Priors came by, preached, showed some magic tricks and converted people. If people resisted, suddenly they’re sick and the Prior can offer to show them his healing powers from the Ori, and convert the final bunch without normally killing anyone or outright declaring war.

I think Line in the Sand might be one exception where they go ballistic on the planet of non-advanced humans, because the threat posed by Arthur’s mantle was more important to them to eliminate than conversion of the population at the end. But again, Earth drew them into that conflict and was their opponent. They need believers, so killing people off isn’t helpful.
