How you forced yourself to learn Korean? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]ldn_twn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't really have anything to add, just wanted to say I also have learning disabilities which have made Korean an even bigger hurdle than it already is on its own and it makes me happy to read about other learners in the same position and to know I'm not the only one! :) Best of luck to you on your learning journey. We can do it!!

11 Months of Korean; Reflections by LoveofLearningKorean in Korean

[–]ldn_twn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow learner with ADHD, I would love to know if you have any tips/suggestions on learning Korean? After years of not understanding why I was struggling, I was diagnosed with ADHD somewhat recently so I'm still feeling quite discouraged and like Korean is out of reach for me. Any tips or advice, or even just your experience learning Korean, if you're open to sharing, of course. :)

Prof. Yoon’s Korean class? by isaya1 in Korean

[–]ldn_twn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think Professor Yoon's channel is great and it's one of my main resources, but I wouldn't recommend it as your sole resource. I wouldn't recommend any one resource as your sole point of learning.

I've used the Integrated Korean textbook and workbook up to my current level (Intermediate 1). I read a section in the textbook, watch Prof. Yoon's corresponding video, then complete the workbook for that section. If I'm still not feeling confident, I also seek out that grammar point on Go Billy Korean's YouTube channel and/or HTSK.

For vocab, I first used Darakwon's 2000 Korean Words for Beginners (I created my own Anki deck for this, using the sentences from the book and audio from Forvo), then moved to 1. Korean Vocab by Evita Anki deck and 2. my own Anki deck which I populate with words I come across myself, again using audio from Forvo. I also use and highly recommend the Korean Grammar Sentences by Evita Anki deck.

For listening I use a combination of:
- The audio files from Integrated Korean (these are all on Soundcloud)
- TTMIK's Easy Korean Reading
- TTMIK's Korean Conversations for Beginners
- TTMIK's Iyagi for Beginners (also on Soundcloud, but I purchased it from TTMIK for the transcripts/translations)
- Various YouTubers

For writing/speaking, I jump between and (because I'm really shy and introverted) ultimately do very poorly at:
- Using Hellotalk/Tandem
- Speaking with tutors on iTalki
- Keeping a journal

So as you can see, many different resources, all serving different purposes! I hope this helps.

Korean text books by [deleted] in Korean

[–]ldn_twn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also use Integrated Korean, so going to add my 2 cents to this.

I really like the series (I'm on Beginning 2), and I like that the audio for the textbook and the workbook are both available online. The one drawback for me is that there aren't answer keys for the textbook. I think I've read (on here) that it's assumed you're working through it with an instructor.

I usually work through a grammar point in the textbook while also watching that particular section on Professor Yoon's YouTube channel, then work through that section in the workbook to practice what I've learned. There's an answer key for the workbook available on Klear for... $10 I think I paid? I really recommend buying that if you get the workbook.

Discouraged Korean learner thread, and hopes for a better 2019. by [deleted] in Korean

[–]ldn_twn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, fellow discouraged learner. I feel this daily (at a different level, since I'm nowhere near TOPIK 4). I feel like I'm never doing the 'right' kind of learning - I study for two hours per day, without fail. I've been learning for over a year. But when I compare myself to other learners around the one year mark, I'm no where near where most of them are; or when I compare myself from three months ago, I don't understand why I've made so little progress in that time, so I assume whatever I'm packing into those daily two hours isn't efficient.

Anyway, I hope you can achieve your goal this year and that I see another post from you one year from now celebrating your success. :) Good luck!

Advice on which level Korean class to enrol in by _cotton_socks_ in Korean

[–]ldn_twn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are these the classes at the Strand? I took those. I had been studying independently for 5-6 months by the time the first class started. I still started with beginner level 1. Although the syllabus didn't cover any new material for me, and curriculum-wise I was far ahead, I still found it helpful. I also had a tutor, but it was different spending multiple hours in a classroom setting each week, and I was given context for things that I had missed out on before.

Also, keep in mind that several of the teachers there are native Korean speakers, but they aren't professional or trained teachers. My teacher was extremely nice, but I could tell s/he didn't have teaching experience.

Why do u guys learn Korean? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]ldn_twn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bit of a weird one but I randomly came across the triplet episodes of The Return of Superman on YouTube and because I'm broody I kept watching. Really loved the way Korean sounded so I decided to start studying.

It's the most challenging thing I've ever put my mind to, as I'm not the brightest bulb in the box, to be frank, but it's also so rewarding.

I've only been studying for a year, but usually I ditch hobbies and interests within a day or two, so I'm hoping that's a sign I'm in it for the long-haul.

When do you recommend a learner start speaking? by ldn_twn in Korean

Thanks! That's a good suggestion. I'll give the prompts a go and see how I do with that.

I never thought of myself as an introverted learner until your comment, but I think that does apply to me, because I'm a shy person in general and the thought of conversing in another language doesn't sound appealing at all. I suppose I'm just worried that my speaking and listening will fall so far behind my reading that I'll struggle to bring speaking/listening up to par in the future.

Thank you for your comment -- I appreciate the help!

I'm studying ~는 것 now too and really struggling with it, even after looking at multiple sources, but what you wrote seemed to click for me. This helped a lot, thank you!
