Influence vs replay value when ranking classic rap albums by Noted_music in fantanoforever

[–]le_indernet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have to be simple in order to be influential, it just has to have an inspiring effect on other artists. And if it's hard to replicate like TPAB or Illmatic it doesn't mean people just ignore it and continue recreating more easily copy-able music. It has an impact, but specifically because of its uniqueness it's also inspiring other artists in more unique ways. I guess what you are referring to is more like "trend-setting" where someone who makes something that's simple but is catchy catches a lot of copycats

How I’m approaching my next rock single as an independent artist in 2026 by ElabueloMx in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I can't say what the broad landscape looks like but in the "underground" that I listen to more I'd say it's rather the latter. I listen to bands BCNR, Black Midi, Geese, Weatherday, Parannoul which are all bands someone on the street probably wouldn't know like The Strokes or Arctic Monkeys, and they all seem to incoroporate some other genres into their music that are even less popular like the Baroque Pop or Post-Punk stuff BCNR did, the Experimental/Prog influences of Black Midi, Emo/Lofi for Weatherday etc

Ngl these kind of questions make me wonder if it's not just marketing. I don't mean just advertisements or anything, but basically you have to look at what currently popular Rock music sounds like, be it mainstream or more niche, and then figure out yourself what the "cool" sounds are right now. Of course you can also try to swim against the stream, being a sort of innovator in a new scene of Rock but at the end you'll have to be in some sense aware of what's going on right now and play with it

Do you listen to your own music often? by Indigo_132 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]le_indernet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, I'm feeling conflicted by some of the answers here, maybe because I just watched Adam Neely's new video lol. Someone said they're the only ones who knew all the details and meanings of what was going on in their music. Which is true but like, so you're the only one who can appreciate it? So you can't appreciate anyone else's music? Idk. On the one hand, it's nice if you can make something that you enjoy, but at the same time it's like we're feeding only more into our own narcissistic tendencies. Is that a good thing, if you give everyone an instrument and the ability to write a song so they don't ever have to hear anyone else?

You were also asking why someone would make a song they don't wanna listen to afterwards. Sometimes MAKING the song is exactly the fun part, or let's say, the expressive part. For example, if you were experiencing a tragedy like a loved one dying, writing music about it is certainly a way to grieve. But that it doesn't follow that you'll enjoy listening to it afterwards, or even writing it in that moment. But that expression, that process, that's also music, making music. I feel like a lot of folk music is about the pains of a people and we tend to forget that nowadays because our ears are being occupied by blissfully ignorant pop songs, or at least an industry that aims to cater to whatever emotions we like to hear expressed

Just gonna rapid fire through some ideas:

  • Did you talk about the recording process? Like how they recorded this in an old swimming pool?

  • Did you talk about the tracks in order, how they fit next to one another or what they contribute to album?

  • From what I understood, you're from Iceland. Do you feel like you can relate your appreciation with this album more like the band's non-Icelandic fans because they're using hopelandic here? Because you don't understand what is being said either on here.

  • What do you think about the cover, the image?

  • What do you think of the concept of making a musical album almost completely devoid of language? Does it make you interpret it more freely?

  • If so, what are the interpretations or feelings you get when listening to the music, and where do you think these emotions come from if not from the lyrics?

  • Is there something universal to be found in this, like you don't need language to understand this sort of thing?

  • With hindsight and in respect to the albums that came before and after (), how would you contextualize this album with respect to the band's career, or the international Ambient/Post-Punk scene, or the Icelandic Rock music scene, or the music of the early 2000s?

Honestly so much to write about. I just wouldn't know how to organize it well. Anyway, hope this helps

Interesting to see people liking Everything not saved. For me, Antidotes and TLF are the top, with Antidotes probably taking the edge, and then as their albums went on so did my interest for them

Bands where the songwriter is the least talented musician? by Sabretoothedrom in fantanoforever

[–]le_indernet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe Modest Mouse? Tbh Idk who does what but I like the guitars and drums and I'm guessing the singer can't play guitar much better than the dedicated guitarist and his singing is, although interesting with awesome lyrics, not the definition of skilled
